I think the Pakistani Guy nailed it! When the economy cannot siphon people into the workforce you form a nexus to survive. It eventually evolves into a closed group that is then seen as a non-integrated community. This is not unique to Canada. Usually first generation immigrants who came in the 70s, 80s and 90s (and 2000s in case of mainland Europe) were treated quite poorly, not given enough opportunities and looked down upon. But they kept their heads down and worked hard with a resolve that their children would be of equal stature. While doing so they created networks and support systems that will help them survive and eventually thrive. This network worked very well for a while untill new generation immigrants came in and became a part of the network but had no idea what went in creating that safe space to begin with. Unfortunately, i think that trump (he does not deserve un upercase) dreams of becoming like putin. All that he is doing, everything in his language and actions screams dictator. I think that putin dreams of having the entire Europe to himself and that trump will actually want everything around the USA which includes ofc, Canada. That was their deal. As a Canadian, here's my biggest concern. The whole border thing was nothing more than a ruse. Trump has cozied up to Putin ... basically, he's Putin's poodle. He's tossed Ukraine to the wolves. (Though, I think Europe and Canada will increase their efforts to help Ukraine.) My fear is Trump will find some way to justify sending American troops into Canada to simply seize the resources he wants but is unwilling to trade for.

Our problem is our government, specifically Republicans who won't accept the simple truth: you want to solve problems you have be disciplined and smart. You have to spend money to fix your problems instead of blaming some else and trying to get them to pay for it. You pay to solve your problems instead of giving huge tax cuts to people who don't need them. You stop lying to your people. You want to change the trade imbalance? Build products that other countries want at a price that makes sense. The EU has no laws that prevent American car manufacturers from selling their cars in Europe. American car companies make shitty cars. They make cars that are too big, that don't make sense for European where streets can be very small and gas is very expensive. The US manufacturers don't make a single small car in thos country that can compete with European cars. US agricultural products are laced with poisonous chemicals that are outlawed in the EU because they kill people. Our governmeent doesn't give a shit about that because to grow healthy food means you have to cut profits, almighty dollars, instead of grow things that the rest of the world will accept. We have an idiot for president who thinks he knows more than anyone else and an idiot party that won't tell him the truth. This is going to cost us big time. We are going into recession, probably a long one because we don't have real leaders and the president on his best day is nothing more than a reality TV personality, and not a very entertaining one at that.

What would be interesting to know is how trade between Canada and Europe explodes, Europe would like all the oil and gas and rare earthminerals Canada has, so would China, if for nothing other than to prevent Americas access to it. I think trump and musk think russia will supply rare earth minerals on the cheap, but Russia is about to collapse again and various regions break away as they did last time, but this time is much worse than back then, Russia really could cease to exist and America will not benefit at all, Europe China India Mongolia will benefit. I know this economic war on Canada will be difficult enough already but I urge my friends north of the border to do their best to fund a massive military expansion as rapidly as possible. Trump is clearly setting the stage and manufacturing excuses so he can invade and force Canada into becoming his 51st state and he's not going to stop with just trying to cripple your economy.
