As a Canada who speaks both French and English and who follows politics quite closely, I have to say that the headline and some of the reporting here is quite misleading. A reduction in immigration has broad support across Canada. I wouldn't say that notion is dividing the country in any significant way. You do have certain industry groups that disagree, but among the population these reductions have broad support. This is a historic change in public opinion in Canada, but it has been driven by the unprecedented increase in immigration under the last term of the Trudeau government. To put this in context, non-permanent residents in Canada numbered around 1.5 million on Q3 2023, but by Q3 2025, that number sat a just over 3 million. The previous government increased immigration targets by 3 or 4 times over what they had been for years, which caused a number of economic issues. Essentially, the volume was simply too high for the economy and society to support. This was unfair to both Canadians and new comers, many of which could not find employment or afford a decent place to live. The changes being suggested are largely bringing Canada back to what the targets were for over a decade before, though a bit lower to account for the sudden surge. Canada remains one of the most pro-immigration countries in the world. However, and this is where I think DW's reporting is misleading, there is a distinction to be made between policies at the federal level and policies at the provincial level. Immigration, per our constitution, is a federal matter, however, Quebec in particular is distinct from other provinces. I don't mean only culturally and linguistically, but also in the powers that have been devolved to it by the federal government. On the question of immigration, Quebec has more powers and more ability to set its immigration targets and programs than any of the other 9 provinces. The particular program discussed here, the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ), is a particular immigration stream that only existed in Quebec. So what is happening with that program cannot be labeled as a whole-of-Canada thing. Where the changes to the PEQ are controversial, unlike the general changes at the federal level, is that people who immigrated under that specific program were promised certain things. There was a multi-year time line to Permanent Residency and then Citizenship. Many of those people have been in Quebec for 5-8 years already. However, the changes made to the program were done in such a way where people who many years into the program, had gotten an education, started a career, had children, ect. are now being told they can't continue and must leave Canada. There are even stories of people who married Canadians, now have children, and the one parent who was under this program now faces the possibility of having to leave Canada and be separated from their family. All through no fault of their own. That is what many people see as unfair, and I agree, however limiting future applications under the program, to bring in less people, that is not controversial. Canada has no responsibility to bring in people who are not already in Canada, but Canada does have some responsibility towards people who uprooted their lives to move to Canada and built new lives here based on promises and representations made to them by the Canadian and Quebecois governments. We should no simply kick those people out of the country.

My parents immigrated in the early 90s and I was born in Canada. It’s very hard to relate to the new immigrants in the last 10 years because we’re so different. The families that immigrated in the 80s and 90s had to assimilate and become “Canadian” which in hindsight was for the best. I learned about my culture and language at home, but my parents, emphasized the importance of being “Canadian first” and being a part of society and “fitting in.” This wasn’t at all a bad thing. I learned to ski, skate, make ice lollies with snow and syrup, went camping, played sports… I feel embarrassed when Indians are looked at in this light, but its true. 90% of this new wave of immigrants on “student visas,” dont intend to actually obtain any sort of an education, instead they use it as a pathway for permanent residency. I know this because I have relatives who say this out loud behind closed doors. I don’t agree with any of it, and quite frankly it’s very embarrassing, but most of us first generation Indian Canadians feel very upset about how its all played out and the negative light in which our people are now viewed under. Personally, I agree they arent interested in becoming culturally Canadian, they just want to be in Canada for financial reasons. They stay in their groups, dont integrate and think somehow this will play out well. It isnt discrimination when your own people also feel this way. I have yet to meet a first gen Canadian who disagrees

Indians are in fact not nice people, as a Canadian I can confirm this and I'm not sure why everyone disagrees. They only hire each other, they are extremely rude and refuse to interact with anyone who isn't them, and they bring their class system they have in India here as well. They are some of the worst people I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

Though I disagree with the immigration, the old guy in the Sikh temple is actually right about what he's preaching. Not to mention the Sikhs are known to be what Indians should be like. I don’t disagree that people on a student visa should go back once the visa expires. a lot of responsibility falls on IRCC and immigration/ government to actually have everything regulated and documented. IRCC is impossible to get a hold of. Applications open people apply.. they get in and then the government forgets about them… the students and work permit people once they land have no idea what is going on. No place to live.. mental health.. tons or restrictions. Don’t invite guest for a sleep over if there is not extra bed in your house. Say the guest then decides they can just sleep on floor or sofa and you keep letting it happen over and over with no boundaries but also just say that they are not welcome. So again it’s the person who invites the guest who is responsible for clear cut communication, deadlines etc

Most of the people don’t realize that Trudeau has helped people and businesses during COVID and avoided millions of deaths unlike US. He did really well curbing the inflation by increasing the interest rates and decreasing it back in time, has been polite to all the haters at the same time and brought enough workers into Canada to prosper the country and businesses on the right path. 2/3rd of the Canadian population disagrees, and that’s sad. We each have our little flickers of time here... No one else will ever know much, if any, of what it is like to be who we are, and for the most part no one will ever really care. Our life is ultimately our life, and so long as we are not harming others in the process we must create a life of our own meaning, determining our own objects of importance and committing to their pursuance. Throughout our life we are faced with serious decisions about what we believe, who we are, and what we do, and mostly none of it is self evident. If we look we can always find a reason to regret any decision we make, move or stay, agree or disagree, take the job or quit, marry or divorce, live one path or another... In all cases whatever the choice may be, we will only know the outcome of the one we take, and none we take will ever ultimately resolve the uncertainty of life. However, perhaps it is less about getting a potential course of life right, and more about attempting to do so with an effort of self honesty and virtue. To live a life that can be looked back on with the knowledge that some of our decisions were wrong in their effects, but right in their intention of not selling ourselves short. Ultimately no matter what we do or say or believe, there will always be a great many who disagree, or judge, or become upset by our decisions. It is of essential importance that we ensure that among those people, we are not one of them.

Contrary to what you said about India rising- I beg to disagree with you. Indian workers abroad are resorting to all sorts of scams everywhere they go (apple sacking Indian workers for malpractices is the latest example). Immigration MAY play a role in rising prices... In fact, it's negligible. Private Equity and Corps are using the excuse of 'immigration' to intentionally drive up prices. Why have prices increased generally. The Gov't printed too much money to keep the Corps/Bay St Happy and share prices up. They should have just rode it out like the rest of the World (aside from Western Countries, You see the exact same thing happening... Rising costs, mass immigration, etc. coincidence? ?) . I completely disagree with the international student english proficiency requirement to get a PGWP (i.e. for all international students). To get into any University program in Canada, you will need to pass an English Language proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL anyways. At least for my four years of an Engineering degree, three co-op terms and a full-time secured Engineering position, 8 months before graduation you would think this international student knows how to communicate in English :). \n\nYes, there are certain students who just want to get the PR and don't care about the degree they are getting and probably just passed with the minimum IELTS requirement. A solution would be to make certain degrees like college diploma students take the English Language proficiency test again and at least have a language testing system which is free for these people. Spending $300-$400 after spending so much on international tuition fee to graduate from Bachelor's degree is a good policy in my honest opinion.

There are certain attributes that define a U.S. president. A U.S. president places the citizens of this country ahead of his own personal interests. Trump doesn’t do that (hasn’t done that). Trump is self serving. On Jan ’21, Trump became an insurrectionist. Many citizens and police officers were injured and one police officers lost his life. According to the Constitution (the Supreme Court disagrees with me), Trump incited citizens to overthrown the certification of the 2020 election. Insurrection is one of the lowest acts any American can do, let alone a U.S. President. Trump states that the “insurrection” falls under immunity for “official acts”. Since when is “insurrection” an “official presidential duty”? Trump is a known Master Liar. This is beyond a moment when a president estimates, guesses and exaggerate numbers, figures and facts. Trump just lies – over 2k+ lies. Trump cannot be trusted in telling Americans the truth. Every time Trump opens his mouth, a lie flies out! Trump doesn’t appear to be able to help himself. One lie after another. Spreading the lie that the 2020 election was “stolen” and not providing legal evidence is an unforgivable act that Americans should #NEVER forget. MAGA, selected GOP, Christian Nationalists don’t appear to be troubled that Trump cannot tell the truth. To me, the truth strengthens the bond of trust – I have NO Trust for Trump! (I am not certain what Classified Material Trump possessed, but if these documents would put my friends, my family and I in harm’s way – it’s a problem.) Again, those who voted for Trump, the 71.2m people, #NEVER thought about this. If they had, Trump would #NEVER have received their vote. America has a short attention span. How quickly have we forgotten that Trump’s inaction of Covid-19 could have prevented many from becoming ill and millions losing their lives. I have been living in canada for 3 years now and I Agree and Disagree on this video. Yeah, Canada has one of the largest natural resource but utilities bill is more than that of India. Yes, canada's population is half of Gujarat's population, but just check the rent in canada once. Many people here prefer living in an EV to avoid rent. Canada may be exporting fertilizers, but Canada has to import food and veggies from other countries and its damm expensive. Ab koi log bolenge, then go back to India.. I am not saying canada is bad. The only reason i am still here in canada is because of its work culture. Work culture in canada is wayyyyy more stress free than that of India's. And just dont get me started with the amount of crime and gun shots. Coz I have seen many news related to gun shots in metro and buses and people gets killed without any reason. And one of the worst things in canada is Drugs. Just last week, I took a walk down two blocks alone at 2 am. It literally scared a shit out of me bcuz of the druggies and homeless people. Even my canadian colleagues are fed-up of this drug abuse and crime. \n\nSo, canada may look all goodie good from outside, but reality is way diff than that.

My dad came to this country in the 80s; I was born here. I had a lovely childhood in the 90s and 2000s. My parents bought a house in suburban Toronto with just a high school education. They sent us to public school, which was perfectly good. I was looking forward to buying my own house, etc. I loved this country. Even back then, people were reticent about being too nationalistic. But I was PROUD to be Canadian even though my parents were not born here. I thought of myself as Canadian, I sang O Canada proudly, I celebrated Remembrance Day in a solemn way even as a child, and I would have died for the country if we had been at war. \n\nWell, not anymore. I don't recognize this country after years of Trudeau. I can never buy a house here, the cost of groceries is burdening me, and the younger people in my family can't even find part time jobs as students. People are increasingly rude, crime has me on edge, it's congested. Freedom of speech, which was taken for granted when I was very young, is dwindling away. Churches have been burnt, Trudeau has incited hatred against people who disagree with him. I'm actually moving to the USA to work there, so that will ease a lot of these issues. (I know it's not perfect down there, but having spent a lot of time there, I can see many things are better). But I'm sad. I'm sad for my family that still lives here. I'm sad that the country I once loved is gone.
