I’m not Canadian, so I don’t have as much of an understanding of their process; however, much like in the U.S., you have to have a legitimate and compelling reason to seek asylum, for example, those escaping a literal war in Syria where death was imminent. Not that I don’t have compassion for this man wanting to better his life and that of his family, but seeking asylum from El Salvador because they have a lackluster economy, crime and violence (while a good enough reason to relocate elsewhere) isn’t a case for asylum. *shrug* Asylum is meant for exigencies, emergencies, imminent danger, which doesn’t look like it applies here. My guess is this man thought seeking asylum would be a way to go around needing expensive documents to do a standard immigration and the process flopped on him.

Think Canada is stupid bringing Syrian refugee? No they know which ones to accept and which not to in terms of qualifications. Further they will be citizens contributing to the economy through tax. I feel bad for them but as a Canadian, do I want them to become Canadian (prob will not pay income tax cause they won’t make a lot of money, being near poverty line)(and will require lots of help from the government)? Or someone from a rich country that goes through investment method to gain PR card (injecting 100-200k into local companies in cash for pr card)(they will most likely buy expensive stuff from our local economy). People should focus on building stable governments and economies in their own countries. You can't just expect the western world to continue to take in millions from failing countries. This guy works hard; the manual labour he does isn't easy, and it's done in sub-zero weather (it can get down to -50 with windchill up near Edmonton). He's contributing to our economy and isn't a criminal; he's just trying to provide his family with a better life. For the same reasons my ancestors immigrated to Canada. Most of them didn't learn English for over 2 generations, but eventually we found our way and our culture became part of the broader Canadian culture. I hope the same happens for him and his family.

It's a heartbreaking situation, but a country has the right to decide who comes in and who doesn't. The places where hard-working, industrious people like Jose come from need to drastically change their societies to capitalize on his talents and provide for a stable future for his children. Perhaps what the US and Canada can do is help train those country's leaders to implement policies that improve their economies like establishing strong property rights, rule of law, free markets, tough measures on crime, etc. But unless you have a Ph.D. in Physics or will start the next Apple computers, we have plenty of unskilled labor here already. Look, I feel for the guy and I'm empathetic to his plight, I don't think he's an evil person, and our country may be better off having him here working and contributiing to the labor pool, but the law is the law.
