so I just have one question... Why is it that black people are being followed in department stores? Think really long and really hard about that... Here in America it is because we have a huge problem with the black community feeling entitled and running through stores and just taking what they want ( flash mobs). The reason they are profiled isn't because of their skin color, it's because they are known, as a culture, to be Thieves who have been told they're entitled. that doesn't mean I believe that it's right, I just understand why people are leery of a culture that feels that it's okay for them to steal and take whatever they want. Nor do I believe all people with that skin color are part of that culture.

Multiple takes of the test can yield different results, and as you take the test, you actually get better at not making mistakes. It actually forces you to make mistakes on the black faces. Profiling exists with whites too, but it has to do with appearance, class and perceived intelligence; it isn't all about colour or race.\n\nI am a larger guy, with a shaved head and a beard. Sometimes I wear a suit and sometimes I am in jeans, a t-shirt and/or a leather jacket. When in a suit I am treated completely differently from when I am in my motorcycle or bumming around clothes. It is a fact that people profile everyone based on appearance, language (verbal ability), and how they are acting. Unfortunately, a person with visible differences, such as skin colour, can't change into something that attracts less attention, but, a black man in a suit is still less likely to be profiled than one in everyday clothes.\n\nAlso, I am well spoken, which makes a difference in the way I am treated. If you speak in a way that makes you sound less educated or of a lower class, then you are treated differently.\n\nTry sending in a white guy who is less clean-cut and less well-spoken and see the difference in the way he is treated. Have him act a bit nervous, look around a lot, or appear to be less than middle or upper class and see the difference in how he is treated. I guarantee he won't get good offers in those apartment buildings, if he gets any offers at all.\n\nA friend once told me a story about a friend of his who was very well off. This man went into an exclusive car dealership to look at a car on display. He didn't like to appear as well of as he was, so often wore simple jeans and t-shirt. When he asked the price of the car, the salesman took one look at his clothing an told him he couldn't afford the car. White profiling at its finest.

So let me get this straight, an immigrant claims to be a refugee even though he isn't, skirted Canadian immigration officials and moved his family to evade the immigration hearing and now acts as if Canada owes it to him to stay.

This guy works hard; the manual labour he does isn't easy, and it's done in sub-zero weather (it can get down to -50 with windchill up near Edmonton). He's contributing to our economy and isn't a criminal; he's just trying to provide his family with a better life. For the same reasons my ancestors immigrated to Canada. Most of them didn't learn English for over 2 generations, but eventually we found our way and our culture became part of the broader Canadian culture. I hope the same happens for him and his family.

There are many problems with anti-immigrant rhetoric and one of them is the classification who is and who isn't an immigrant and the question of when does a person stop becoming an immigrant and become a Canadian? A significant portion of people living in Canada are first/second/third generation Canadians and so, how do we classify these people, are they immigrants or are they not? And what of their parents/grandparents who immigrated, are they? It's very important to note that without their ancestor parents, all these first/second/third gen Canadians will not be here and they are now 'Canadians' today because we had pro-immigration laws. Also, the idea of accessing services is by itself, very problematic. I spent the first 4 years of my life here paying high tuition fees as well as tax that are used to subsidize fellow Canadians' tuition fees yet I'm not able to access any government services. Following graduation, I worked as a worker on visa where my tax was no less than an average Canadian yet government services were very much inaccessible to me. It was only after I became permanent resident, that somehow everything suddenly became available to me. I have been tax paying 6-7 years before I became a PR here yet all those years, I wasn't able to access a single thing yet somehow, after I became PR, I'm eligible for everything? The tax argument doesn't make sense at all. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in like a year and does that mean now I am one of you, Canadians?

Something that stuck out to me was that $1350 and $1360 in several common fonts will look similar, especially on a quick glance and in smaller sizes. It is entirely possible that the guy misread the number. I think it's telling that CBC decided it was subtle racism rather than giving the guy the benefit of the doubt. I have some prejudice about certain people and topics and I stereotype of course. It's an automatic thing for humans to do. We immediately assess everything and anyone around us. That's normal. Now, what isn't normal is going out of your way to violate the rights of any human being or to harass them in any manner. I know racism exist being Mexican living in Mexico, I have experienced that. Although the shopping and looking for apartment experiment is great, has anyone stop and think yes it is about race or color of the skin but also a interesting point is your clothing and overall appearance instead of the skin sometimes, when shopping if I see someone entirely dressed in black with hat and some sunglasses isn't that suspicious (of course is discriminating but I have to use that example in order to make my point) instead of actual color of the skin? I think that's another aspect to further study, how you dress and the image you project is a factor for discrimination itself, instead purely based on the race.
