The story of the Russian guy going back to Russia to avoid taxes didn't age well. I remember watching this video in 2021 and thinking that the higher taxes are worth it because you are essentially buying safety. It doesn't matter if the income tax of your home country is lower if the local currency keeps devaluating, if you can't buy what you want because importing is hard and expensive or if your country is simple just not a safe place to live. Now with the war and the sanctions, your Russian friend must be having a really hard time; borders closed, the ruble is nearly worthless and he's probably trying to flee the country to avoid being drafted, leaving any real estate behind.

I didn't find Vancouver too isolated. Seattle is just over 2hrs away. Portland about 4. Try living in Calgary or Edmonton for that matter. But I generally agree with you. I left leafland 20 years ago for the UK.

In Australia, we get 4 weeks annual leave based on a 38hr week. I didn't realise Canada was 2 weeks, rising to 3 weeks after 5 years of working for the same employer and 4 weeks afrer 10 years. That does seem restrictive. Apart from that, Australia has high taxes, high insurance costs etc.

I'm listening to hear how Canada is not a desirable place to live, bc I have thought it would be a better alternative to the USA. But it still sounds better than life in the USA, if even just slightly. ?\nSo far, I hear 30% taxes on income (which is same in the USA).\nYou have free healthcare, however you have to wait in emergency room for 8 hours.....we DON'T have free healthcare....and guess what? $450+ later, we have still waited 4-10 hours in the ER. \nHere in the USA, our cost of living is insanely high compared to a single and even a double income. Our lowest rent is $1,200 to live in low income surroundings. A rent around $1,800/month will bring you to nicer surroundings in an apartment, but still surrounding areas have crime. \nFood costs are so high, Gas is so high. We haven't bought new clothes for ourselves in YEARS, only for our kids. \nDaycare is $485-500 month per child, even before and after school care. \nHealth insurance averages $145/per person per month, not to mention car insurance which is required to drive. \nSegregation has improved here but is ever being integrated back into our society as racism is kept very alive, even as they constantly teach it in the schools. They say it's to teach history but I believe it is just reinforcing racist ways and thinking patterns. \nI don't blame anyone for wanting to return to the comfort of their own people, language and living and country. \nYou may have us with the cold/hot weather in Canada! \nI didn't know about the Canadian passport being so opportunistic for travelling. I remember a time when the cost of living in Canada was much more affordable. I also remember a time when we didn't wait so long to get our free healthcare. The healthcare issue started many years ago when some old Conservative dude was in charge and he decided the best way for us to save money was to take it out of the healthcare funds. And then everything went ?with our healthcare. The cost of living was always high but it was balanced with our incomes. But it just absolutely ridiculous since Covid! I have to take on part time work on top of my full-time job now just to afford my increased cost of living!!

Back home everyone felt the same, but if people in Canada say that there is no such thing as colour, or they are colour blind, they get accused of being racist. \nHere in the UK most things are as bad as Canada, if not worse, in terms of the other things that Whizqueen and Tinuola talk about: we have gloomy weather and it is wet and cold much of the year, we have high taxes, many people are working all they can and are still relying on charities called food banks just to be able to pay all their other bills. \nBut our government is still not as bad as the way Trudeau has been governing Canada recently. Government by presidential decree is not democracy, it is a dictatorship. When people can't even protest against the dictatorship of Trudeau without being slandered and called horrible names and then punishing people by not only freezing and stealing the protesters' money, they even went after the bank accounts of people who had helped the protesters. Let me clue you in on something! I once was transported to an American hospital on Saturday morning and was discharged by Monday afternoon. The bill was for $42, 000.00 and the ride in the ambulance was $40.00 shy of a $1000.00! If I didn't have an insurance(which I have since lost!!!) I would have been up Schitt Creek. So before you start complaining about an 8 hr wait at the emergency room. You better know how damn good you have it.\n\nSecondly, you lumped at 50 & 60 somethings into a giant Stereotype Bowl. You both make valid points about Canada. I am 2nd generation Canadian. I do feel like its expensive here and Even I have a hard time landing a job. (Recently got laid off from my career job, they said I didn't have enough experience to work there). My friends who aren't single and live with their partner, have an easier time living here compared to people who are single & living by themselves. \n\nNight life is boring here. However, daytime life specially in the summer is better. I feel like Canada is more for an outdoor person. Depending where you live, there are beaches, mountains, trails, & lakes to explore. Some parts of Canada even look tropical! We have hot springs here as well!\n\nFor the leisure & work life balance, I feel like that depends on the person. I used to work 2 jobs (not because I was bored or needed the money at the time), I just wanted to save more money & help my friend out with his business. I felt like I had good balance of work & leisure. I hanged out with my friends on Friday & Saturdays then I had my 'me' days on Sundays.\n\nIf you are going to move here, do your research, also I don't think people consider their countries dollar into the equation, what I mean is, if you want to convert your money to Canadian... you might have less money then you have. Example, at this moment, 1 Mexican Peso is 0.066 Canadian dollars, therefor people coming from Mexico might have a hard time afford things in Canada compared to a person who is moving from USA. We left too (in 2020). Currently we travel the world full-time now. Our reason was we felt like we were paying toooo much in taxes. We enjoyed our time there but in the end, it didn’t feel worth it??‍♀️. Especially because our home country (The Bahamas) doesn’t have income taxes. So yea, now we work online, travel full-time and don’t ever have to file our taxes nor pay income taxes.

One of the top issues is being black. Seen as black and identified as black when you leave a predominantly Black Country. \nWhen I watch the various Realestate shows of white people buying property abroad as second home or just packing up and moving. I always say it must be nice! But to just go there and be a regular teacher, doctor, lawyer, engineer to the low and middle class you’ll end up with the same financial issues and struggles as a result. You gotta now cater to the rich and famous wealthy people but then it’s back to never being home and not enough time for family. \nThe reality is if we could make the money we make here in North America and Uk back home in in the Caribbean and specific countries in Africa it would be a dream come true and that goes for other communist countries too. You truly have to know what makes you happy. Make money but enjoy life it might mean living below your means even though you can can afford a bit better life style. People do it all the time back home (not because they want to I know) but for some reason when you move abroad a one bedroom for your single self is to small, the car under $24k isn’t good enough, you don’t want your kids to share a room so you need a bigger house and the list goes on and on. \nCanada is boring if your not in a major city with money to spend you know why? Because people forget the population of the entire country of Canada is only a 3rd, 4th, 10th of the population of certain countries that immigrants came from and in the case of the US population it’s 100x more than Canada. So of course there’s more opportunities there. \nAnd finally imagine if more countries didn’t need visas to travel? They really would just come to make money and go back home or live bicoastal. Even just the freedom of travel half of the immigrants would of settled elsewhere before the year was up or go back home.

I grew up in Canada and never had any issues either with health care or going to school i didn't mind the weather as i love to ski and play hockey i rather be cold than hot to each its own i wouldnt give up Canada for the us no time the dollar might be a little stronger and i got my tax returned to me every year plus wheni bought medication with cash i got my money back I Love Canada the cleanest country i know....

I have a male friend who migrated to Edmonton Canada a few years ago. He migrated because his wife was a nurse. But didn't stay there long cuz his sister who is a nurse lives in the USA. He move to the USA Now lives in the USA as an US immigrant along with wife and kids. They are staying with his sister on a one big house.

First of all I'm guessing you are in Toronto or Vancouver or Calgary maybe Montreal, The most expensive places in Canada to Live for sure. I live in Manitoba where the cost of living is pretty close to the cheapest in Canada. Yes minimum wage is $11.95 and apparently going up shortly.
