I love love love this conversation!!!! Born and raised in Atlanta Georgia.\n\nHonestly, it makes me wish I had enough money to afford a second place in Canada. I have traveled the world, Europe, Africa, all over the Americas, and the Pacific, however, I have never been to Canada! At 53 years old and a black American man.., Canada sounds SOOOOO APPEALING!!!! I wish I could own a condo there or something!!! Sounds just LOVELY!!!

Food quality in Canada is waaaay better, I been to Toronto to Niagara falls and drove to Montreal, even the American fast food joints tasted better in Canada, I didn't get to try PFC LMAO. Yes my fellow Americans KFC is PFC in the French side of Canada. Montreal women oh my, now what I thought was funny in Toronto every ethnic group has black kids hahaha, they out there trying to build the next Drake

Canada big ups. Definitely, when I have been to the states, the racial segregation was one of the biggest surprises. Being from Toronto, you'll legit have every culture within 1 floor of 1 apartment building. Then go to like Jersey, and not see a single black person in an entire neighborhood. I REALLY like the diversity of Canada, at least in the big cities. Happy to be raising our daughter here, we actually went out of our way to ensure the daycare we put her in was pretty diverse. \nNow, in our small towns, shit gets a little.... I don't wanna say RACIST per se, but definitely a lack of cultural diversity. Annnnd maybe a bit racist lol. \n\nBesides that, our Universal healthcare is definitely one of the reasons I am proud to be Canadian. It's not perfect, but Canadians don't even understand the idea of medical bankruptcy. Like, how could anyone be against the idea of having a system that gets rid of that? Because taxes go up? Like, we all get old and sick at some point. You DO get that money back with the healthcare you receive eventually, and in the long run, pay less per capita than places with private healthcare. It's like being against your pension. Makes no damn sense to me. \n\nLastly, I gotta throw a little shade on the overly patriotic nature of Americans. Like, the US makes great entertainment. They are a world leader in making entertaining shit. But besides that... y'all ain't so great. Your good, y'know, top tier in terms of countries. But not better in most ways than other first world countries. Worse in a few. Canada isn't perfect, but you don't see Canadians constantly claiming to be better than everyone else. It's such a weird flex, like, everyone who isn't from there knows it's not true. It's like showing up to a car meet in a Honda Civic, claiming to be faster than everyone else, laughing and driving off. It's just weird

As a New Yorker who frequents MTL. women in Montreal are way hotter on average. \nNew York women are constantly looking to finesse a situation and operate from a struggle mindset.\n\nIn Canada you'll have solid 10s working barely above minimum wage, you'll feel like you're tripping over baddies.\nTake one of their average looking girls, dump her in NYC and she'll be worshiped as a queen.\nCanadian women are also much easier/nicer to talk to and a lot less materialistic.\n\nAlso, (alleged fat shaming segment ahead) black women can't tell me shit about them being naturally fatter because Canadian black girls aren't big like that. Of all my cousin's friends, maybe 2 are out of shape and neither would be considered that big by American standards. It definitely shifts city-to-city, region-to-region. People in Western New Yorker are fatter than people in NYC

I am a queer black American and I found a lot of community and events particularly in Montreal . I found it really comforting because there aren’t many options in America for that .

Why don't you guys move to Africa where you will see abundance of black people, or go to Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Philippines where Asians can feel accommodated, come to Nigeria where you will pay almost 40% if your salary as direct tax and many other indirect taxes and VATs to be paid from your Lilliput salary which doesn't have hope if growing, where your tax is being squandered by the leaders and not a single infrastructure is built, come to Nigeria and come and see super queue at hospitals, schools, banks etc that are not even used by the leaders, even if you school outside Nigeria you don't have automatic employment until you write the exams or your profession in which you have to study for, maybe you ladies should come back to Africa, you better appreciate where God gives you the opportunity to have a meaningful life, 80% if Africans are not even average but far below average yet you are complaining of living a simple average life, are all Americans billionaires, our brains have been destroyed that we believe until we are billionaire before we ate successful or fulfilled, in Nigeria only government gives you one month leave but private organization only gives two weeks in a year and the private organizations are the largest employer of labor in Nigeria. Where in the world do we find the most people of different cultures and races? America. Canada. Europe. What will be left of these regions will be smaller nations for your conquerors the Oriental-Asians, Latinos-Mestizos, Arab-Asians, East Indian Asians, Blacks, North Africans-browns, etc. Then they’ll subdivide among each macro group. Great video. I think part of the issue is that American has a faulty foundation. We are a very diverse country, but in that respect there is a natural division amongst races, with other contributing factors, that causes a general lack of unity, and know one is technically from here. It is very different cultural wise when you and your ancestors can trace your lineage back thousands of years to the same land, verses a couple hundred, like anyone here in America. You have Irish Americans who in Ireland have a very distinct culture, but here they are just considered white, you have black Americans like myself who are like 3 or four African tribes in one, who are just considered black. So I think the black white mindset of America contributes to this factor significantly.

Block parties, cook outs, neighborhood meetings, bus trips to the beaches, weddings and Saturday clean ups were all apart of our past community's. Yes some still exist. However, anytime Blacks in America have demanded equity, justice, education, health rights, human rights, and fair housing, we are met often with a back lash. Suddenly, rents go up. Houses have doubled or tripled in increase. Crime waves have made it almost impossible for people to come out and relax freely. Political changes have also played a major roll. Neighborhoods have been redlined. Even where one goes to vote has been moved. White racism and fear, entire industry's have moved put of key areas. So thete is a natural break down. Neighborhood meets come to a end and different organizations from schools, to planting trees to parking all get affected due to such changes. Local small businesses that knew each family members also close up and leave. Its not a question of oh you have everything you need in your American house. That is not it! Its more complex. The lack of kids playing out front or the older ladies keeping watch have disappeared also due to no rent control policies.

Everyone's opinion will be different. I am black American. What u see now doesn't mean it's always been that way. When I was growing up in the suburbs of long Island, everyone was outside every chance they got. We kids made up games, jumped rope played in the parks went to the beach concerts etc. The adults, if lived in apartments including housing, sat outside and interacted. Neighbors in houses had block parties, new neighbor welcoming, and so on. One of the reasons at least in my community was that a lot of folks were from the south. Everyone spoke, knew each other in their villages. As time went on and more foreign born moved in things changed mainly because of difference in culture then in some places crime is bad. There's no one shoe fits all. It's different all over this big country.

Brother, You are so right! But, I am a african American who grew up in the 70’s. It wasn’t like this until blacks integrated with whites. We had fun in our neighborhoods just like you described. Any neighbor could correct us. We could just go to the neighbors house to play. I grew up in Chicago and we had block parties with dancing, games, food sand talent shows. We played games in the street after school. When we left our black communities we had to behave like whites who don’t want to socialize with us. That’s what you see where you live. So they suffer and stay inside their houses. I left Chicago for university and moved to Newark, New Jersey and it was life there too! So many cultures, people walking, languages, music, vendors on the street. Puerto Rican’s, Haitians, Dominicans, and Africans. You should be some place like that. But many places in America “now” are boring like where you showed. Move!!!

Black American here. Please stay in your country and fight. Stop burdening others with your weakness. If you won't fight to improve your country, then you won't understand how to operate in a country that has fought for its improvements. Do not make yourself a burden, fight for your own. People, no matter the color, so not respect people who run away from their issues, yet demand more somewhere else than they demanded in their own countries. Stop running ?‍♀️

I'm Asian from Republic of Korea. I liked USA but since a few days I'm really hating that country because of racism against Asians, Black people, people who are different religious. I've not seen other countries being this racist as America. I'm not saying that everyone from USA is racist but sadly i'm sure majority of them are! American people think that every Asian is Chinese and they call us Virus, they tell us to go back to our country if an Asian visits. This is how many Asians are losing interest in USA nowadays.. \nsorry for my bad English, i'm still learning! ??‍♂️

A compelling documentary, thank you. Why is it that black people continue to be so demonised and de-humanised? It is such a shame that follow Asians and even American Natives play such a role in perpetuating racism against African descent people, but I guess they have their issues of identity. Real shame nonetheless, but one thing at the time, we still have a bigger hurdle to overcome.\n \nOf course, it is still not easy to be a black woman, man or child today. Sadly our mothers are still crying for their children being killed or overly punished by the police institution, our kids are still targeted if not simply despised for being beautiful, bright, talented, lively and brilliant beings with deeper skin tonalities, and hair that speaks for us otherwise. It is still dangerous because there is so much hatred across the world against us as we are coming to understand. And hatred is unpredictable. It comes in different ugly shapes. \n\nAfrican descent people are institutionally exposed to a lack of opportunities based on race, leading to the disproportionate poverty levels in our communities, and poverty brings your far closer to crime. That should not be so difficult to calculate. We're faced with higher mortality and disease rates, covid 19 has rubbed that to our eyes, care systems medical world is in less favour and neglect black communities. On a day-to-day, I am so insulted about the security guard that follows me in the shop, it is so disrespectful and embarrassing, that makes me move suspiciously indeed, yet so low and ignorant I don't even want to have to confront the issue. \n\nI agree with the writer who writes about his experience (and shame?) of being a black man in Canada- the same is institutionally reflected in Europe and across the world let's not be naive, we're not welcome but they should know they have no choice. I believe what he really is trying to express is based on the fear of being a black man in a hostile environment, but we should certainly have nothing to be ashamed of. \n\nOn contrary, we should be very proud because we are still here, like any other citizens paying our taxes and playing positive roles in society by major. But, we also are doctors, politicians, judges nurses, waiters, carers, scientists, builders, bankers, entrepreneurs, employees or unemployed. \n\nSadly on a day-to-day, we are not viewed as equal people, with equal rights and needs, who, by large, just want the good for our children, our families, neighbours and indeed countries. I’m American, I was very curious about what’s happening in Canada in the black community

I'm trying to find information on weather being black and wealthy in Canada: is it worse or better than American. I'm not really concerned about name calling. In America you can be in serious danger being wealthy and black because of the american perception of wealth, cops tend to harass you unless you involve yourself with the political backing of your town. Going to meaningless functions and black tie events and donations to mayor's and goveners. I'm tiered of paying for my freedom is Canada different when it comes to this?

Canada is better in many aspects but in general wayyy better , in Usa u can make money ,make good business less taxes ok better weather in some places mayb less boring ,BUT in Canada u r treated as a human being ur children get free education, free health care ,child benefits,welfare, many otther benefits, , see usa worship money ,capitalism , guns, violence,and wars they dont give a shit about human s health or life,see Canadians are healthier than most American .in USa see how they treat Black Africans Americans they never wanted to admit that they are full Americans just like white they worked hard but they wanted to keep them under their feet by keeping them in ghettos to keep the white supremacy !! I have been to Vancouver and Toronto. I felt more discriminated against because I am American than Black. People asked me if I voted for Trump. Which I did not.\nI’m know racism is in Canada but it’s not like here in the US where you have to worry about the po po.

There is discrimination here. I am from Latin American and it has been difficult to fit in this country but most importantly to find a job. I mean fit in because they look at me very weird. I don’t really feel part of the society here. As for work/job There are many companies that only want asian or only want white people. I think Canada should start asking companies to present how many black, Latino, Asian and white were hired.

No offens but the original people of North American are brown people and we all came from Africa and as time pass and people moved doesn't mean you can forget the people that call this land home and you ripped away and stole my people from Africa to do your labor without paying us so next time you tell someone to go back to there Countries why don't you listen to your own advise. The discrimination is always going to be there because it's how people feel about you. That's why Reparation is SO IMPORTANT for Afro American descendants of North American Slavery, so that we can buy or rent to people that exactly want us there or buy a home in the neighbor of our choice. The Black economics is under the poverty line and the United States of American owe us REPARATION FOR THE ATROCITIES THEY HAVE AFFLICTED UPON US. This is one of the ways Black people can survive.

I own 11 real estate properties in Europe (UK, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland), and i must say i don't lease to Chinese, this is not anti Asian at all, because i will prioritize Japanese among any other ethnic group or country. I am also reticent to lease to Black people who are actually from Africa, i have absolutely no problem with Middle Easterners, and as for Whites i will prioritize Swiss then Scandinavians, Belgians, Dutch, Irish, Americans, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Brits, Italians, Eastern Europeans, Greek, Turks.\nThis is not based on race but on experience. The people i have had the most difficulties with were Chinese, Africans and Eastern Europeans, the ones i have never had a single problem with are Japanese, Swiss, Middle Easterners and Scandinavians.

The first time i travelled across Canada on a road trip, heading west, going town to town along the TransCanada Hiway, i choose a black friend to accompany me. I choose him because he was really easy to get along with and i knew he was an auto mechanics enthusiast, which, as it turned out came in handy on the trip. We were on the road for a few months. I grew up in a city in a little multicultural bubble of liberalism and was taught as a child not to judge others based on skin colour or sex; to be respectful towards people of all ilks and ethnicities. The thing is, i was young enough to not really realize that i was in a bubble. As we travelled though parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta, where there are few to no blacks in many towns, i began to realize that Canada is quite racist in the outback and little towns mid country. I was surprised and actually angered by it. My friend took it in stride however. For example, i was meeting people, getting invited home for dinner and meet the wife and kids sort of thing, and my friend couldn't even get a conversation going with most people, they just totally ignored him and gave him a wide berth. I know underlying all of that is just the fear of an unknown quantity and the fact that a lot of Canadians watch American news sometimes which tends to be chock full of black in gang wars, shooting each other and committing violent crime so they get a false view of black culture because the news at that time rarely showed blacks unless they were committing a crime.

Well, Canadians are a minority in North America. California has more people than Canada. There are more Blacks in the USA than all Canadas population. So, being a minority will make you feel like your kind of special. Being American is not since there are 320 million Americans .

Actually , Canada is still close the Britain , to the Crown , USA is multi national countrie , there is not an american ethnicity , just a lot of mixture between blacks and hispanic and the largest european origin majoritiy , so in my opinion Canada should stay independent !

I find it to be swept under the carpet as far as racism is concerned, they smile in front of you but behind you they Stab you in the back .well the Americans is right up front I can work with you but I won’t socialize with you, at least you’re truthful.\n\n I find Canadians to be very two face , Hidden they true feeling and pretend a lot . I have experienced the first time in my life racism was within Canada and it brought me to tears. As an African-American with mixed cultural heritage ( Black Indian and Caribbean) this program shows the need for a global approach to Afrophobic thinking and behavior.

I find it very depressing that the history of black people seem incomplete,without reference to slavery.....but most nowadays African Americans,don't know much about slavery......and it should be understood that most Africans were born free,they were never slaves.\n How can we bring more dignity to the black person abroad......seeing that the immediate reaction of being reminded of slavery is racism.\nI would like to hear a renewed rhetoric that identifies the years of slavery in speeches. I’m a black American and we don’t really hear about black Canadians and their similar struggle (possibly worse since I’m just assuming there are fewer black people there and Canada is not “known” for its racism like the US is so people may not think it’s an issue)

Psychology student here. In the interest of accurate information, I would like to point out some flaws I find with some of the studies in this documentary and question the conclusions reached. I understand that CBC Marketplace are not personality psychologists and therefore cannot be expected to produce the same quality of work as a scientist. However, I think it is worthwhile to think critically about the information in the media that we consume. I am also open to anyone who wants to engage in debating the contents of this documentary.\n\n\nThe following are some notes I took while watching the documentary outlining the individual hypotheses of the studies I think are flawed and descriptions of their respective accompanying errors. \n\n\nThere are three possible research questions, and thereby dependent variables, being answered by the apartment hunting studies.\n1. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \n \n2. If there is no discrimination between the white man and the first-nations man between Toronto, Montreal, Regina, and Victoria, then they should get equal treatment, including quotes and availability, when apartment hunting. \na. Could total apartments visited be a confounding variable? (4 in Toronto, 3 in Montreal, Regina, and Victoria) \nb. Could the gender of the landlord be a confounding variable (perhaps men are more discriminatory than women)? \nc. They only showed the black man apartment hunting in some of the trials. I am considering him out of the study for consistency purposes. The first-nations man is the only one who got unfair treatment in the footage of apartment hunting. \n \n3. Possible hypothesis: If male landlords/agents are more discriminatory than female landlords/agents, then the white man and the first-nations man will get different treatment at different Canadian apartments in equally diverse cities. \na. Don’t know all the information about the genders of the landlords/agents, not all the footage is shown, but the ones where they get ripped off are male. The others shown are female. The remaining interactions are not shown.\n\n\nThere are also some factors that may have influenced the racial bias survey and, in my estimation, rendered it scientifically unreliable.\n\n\n1. The bias survey and accompanying tests at the CBC attributed the differences between the studies to unconscious racism. What if it was just due to familiarity with certain racial groups over others? \na. The black participants had no bias between European-American and African Americans, supposedly indicating no racism, while the white and first-nations participants did, supposedly indicating racism. Is it possible that another interpretation of this result is that bias is a function of familiarity: that we are comfortable with the majority demographic in the geographical location we live in, as well as our own kind. Therefore, the black guys are less biased against black people due to being both black and living in a white majority demographic? \nb. The participants took the survey knowing the objectives of the researchers was to study racial discrimination. They might have influenced the answers they gave \nc. Whether the participants agreed with identity politics or not was a confounding factor that was not controlled . You can only be racially unbiased biased if you think that racial identity is a means of accurately viewing the world. People who do not believe in the existence of identity politics may answer the questions quite differently, which could be a different reason for the results.\nd. I took the study myself. The words that participants were required to match were a mix of adjectives and nouns. It is known within psychology that nouns have higher levels of imagery. This was not properly controlled and therefore is another confounding variable. \n \nAll the other studies looked fine to me. I welcome any discussion on my observations.

Canada is very good place for black immigrants. If you're a black immigrants in America, you face racism, xenophobia, biases, stereotypes and hate from both the White and black Americans! (Sometimes the blacks can be the worst).
