At one time no South American country would have dared defy a US president and risk invasion and regime change, now they all openly defy Trump with abandon since the rise of BRICS. Colombia has applied to join BRICS and these retaliatory tariffs will simply speed that up. Colombia stated quite clearly - we will not accept undocumented migrants who have done nothing wrong but work, pay their tax and behave as excellent members of US society - basically Trump try somewhere else to dump your unwanted workers. For these slow people, let me explain how this works: tariffs work as a tax on poor people. First time in the White House, Trump put a 25% tariff on China goods. Dollar Tree, which imports from china usually to sell everything for a dollar had to pay 25 cents on a dollar in taxes to collect the goods from the ports. So it passed that tax to the prices. So went from everything $1 to everything $1.25. a 25% percent inflation. Then China stopped buying soybeans from USA. Farmers went broke and Trump have to give them 29 billion in handouts so they won’t go broke. Genius?

So if the c-17's are 3 times the cost of civilian airliners, just send them back on civilian airliners, what's the problem there? Seems an easy fix and I as a tax payer don't want to pay 3 times more when it can be done cheaper. I Thought Trump was a businessman and knew about economics? I guess he's not interested in keeping it cheaper for us citizens. Furthermore if he tariffs China we are all in big trouble.

The Colombian president was claiming that migrants are welcome back as long as they are not treated as criminals since they are not criminals. Entering the US illegally is a civil offense like passing red light but not a criminal offense under US law. So then he said he could send his own plane and make sure that those people are not handcuffed and treated with dignity in their arrival, since Trump was treating them as criminals. It is not like some here are saying that the tariff threat caused him to back off, it was just a point of being treated fairly since they are not criminals.

I rarely LOL but hearing about an immediate 25% tariff on goods today and 50% next week actually did it. Talk about losing popularity… wait until everyone has to pay 25-50% more for their coffee. Columbia doesn't pay the tariffs, the importers do and they will pass on the tariff amount plus administration fees to the American consumer in the end.. that includes the red hat cult members .

People don’t understand tariffs. It hurts the foreign country far more. It means American companies will not buy from them leading them to lower prices or not do business with America. which is catastrophic for them.

I’m not a financial expert but it strikes me that placing a tariff on every country of the world (especially major trading partners like china and Canada) will only harm the US and therefore US citizens.
