Hi Tyler. I think that when you say you've lived mainly in small towns and that most people are pleasant may stem from the fact that you're a white male. Many if not most small towns in America suffer from a lack of cultural diversity. It's easy for them to be kind and pleasant when they hardly ever get confronted by anyone outside their cultural norms. How accepting would they be if a bunch of families from other cultures would start moving into their little piece of paradise? Would they remain as pleasant and friendly? That's where the real test would be. Mind you, I'm not sure it would be so different here in Canada if you look at more remote villages.

My American husband and I choose Canada when we first got married due to health care and educational reasons. My husband has been in Canada for almost 13 years and says he would never move back to the US. I joke about moving to California or Hawaii (somewhere warm) any time it gets to -30 Celsius or colder and he says over his dead body will he ever go back.

I was born, raised and lived in the US until I was 35. When the orange monster was elected I said F this and went to Canada. Best decision I ever made, it's clean, safe, free health care and the people don't just say they're proud Canadians, they show it. It's very community focused up here, we take care of each other. The ONLY thing that sucks in Canada is the food, American wins all day on that one.

My God there should be A flying peace and order in the plane where ever destination is! People and getting unruly, act like a kid, behaviors are getting Repulsive. To put things into perspective Tyler, there have been 340 mass shootings in the States so far this year. That's more than one a day and is scarily close to 2 per day. Meanwhile in Canada there's been 2 (which also thankfully no one has died in and 'only' 4 were injured in each though ideally neither of these would have happened either of course). The year in Canada with the highest number of mass shootings ever was 2018 with 7. Since the year 2000, there have been 53 mass shooting in Canada. That means, in less than a year, the US has had more than 6x the amount Canada has had in the last 23 years combined. Almost all of Canada's mass shootings also tend to happen either directly in Toronto or just the GTA in general so, anyone who's worried about that in Canada can live basically anywhere else in the country.\n\nI have no doubt that the vast majority of Americans are at least decent human beings with a fair number of them being amazing people. However, if even 10% of Americans were considered crazy, that's basically the same number of people as the population of Canada. Canada has it's crazy people too of course but the chances of running into one is far less likely and it's much harder for those crazy people to become dangerous because it's harder to get firearms.

I think the US has beautiful countryside and wonderful scenery and many lovely people, however, because of the divisiveness of the Republicans and the MAGA/Trump/NRA group which has caused such chaos and violence throughout the States during the past decade things in the US have gone downhill extremely quickly. The number one reason Children in the US are dying from is bullets - not accidents or diseases. That is a terrible statistic and the Republicans are doing absolutely nothing to stop it - prayer doesn’t stop bullets. \nAs a Canadian I used to travel to the US as a tourist but I no longer feel safe going there and will no longer go across the border. Florida seems to have implemented the worst political policies ever in its history and I believe it’s economy is going to absolutely crash. \nIf the States votes Republican in the election it’s going to be in its absolute worst possible political, global, financial, economic, and humanitarian position in its history. It will be a critical crisis for the country….

With your gun culture, politics and health care system in no way would I ever move to the US. There are way to many mass shootings happening all over the US and I can't see your gun culture ever changing to lower and make it safer to live in most parts of the US. We spent most of our free time playing different RPGs over the years together. Around 9 years ago she came down with some kind of a illness and thank goodness she had healthcare through her job. The thing is though the system couldn't/wouldn't identify what was causing her decline in health. She went through all kinds of tests but became sicker and sicker in years to come. She died in October of 2021 but before she died we both wondered if the health care system was just milking her insurance and not really taking proper care of her. BTW she lived in SLC Utah. Going back to your gun culture though she felt safe living in SLC the mall she went too had a mass shooting and she also carried a pistol in her purse. ( she had a permit ) I have never known any woman in Canada who felt that she needed to carry a gun in her purse for safety.

Well, you said it. On the gun violence topic that it seems that Americans are desensitized to how much gun violence is happening. It does happen in big urban areas but also rural areas. This is what the world sees of America and their love of guns. Too much money in that industry for it to ever change. I mean, if nothing has changed when those babies.....let that sink in. When those babies at Sandy Hook died, the parents were bullied threatened and basically disrespected and discredited but gun lobbyists, government and even the average American. If that tragic event didn't change anything....nothing will.

Healthcare, education, gun situation, LGBTQ+ rights, abortion rights, environment, ... Some of the reasons why I would never ever want to move to the US. It's fine for vacation, nothing more.

I went to University in the states and lived there for a time, but since coming back to Canada I would never ever want to live in the states again. Canada is a much friendlier and safer country not to mention health care. It is when you get old down there that you are in jeopardy.

I was never interested in moving to the States but I think my reasons are different then most.\n\nStarting in my teens, I couldn’t understand why anyone would willingly live somewhere you couldn’t wander in the wilderness without worrying about things like poisonous snakes and poisonous bugs. I couldn’t understand what was so great about swimming in the sea if you have to worry about what part of the beach and how far out you go. How can swimming be fun? Lakes and rivers are much better. \n \nWhen I got older, I couldn’t understand how anyone could enjoy summer when the sun goes down so early in the evening. I left Vancouver, BC partially because the summer days are shorter then home and the winters are too dark. Even on an overcast night in winter up here, the light reflects off the snow and makes the night brighter. Do I like -30C or colder when it happens? No. I can’t walk the dogs because their feet might freeze but they’re idiots and will wrestle in the house if I don’t.\n\nNow that I’m almost 60, I note that all of my American cousins who had duel citizenship have moved back to Canada upon retirement where the conversation rate makes their pensions worth more and after 3 months they qualify for BC medical.\n\nThe guns, healthcare, right wing “Christians”, loss of human rights and potential for violence are why I don’t want my daughter to ever move there.

Tyler you are oblivious to what happens in the US which is obvious by your reaction I think you should explore more about your own country. It seems to me Canadians know more about US history past and present, your politics, religious zealots, bigotry, racism, the list goes on. By the way the number one cause of death for children in the US is guns you might want to explore that. Going around living in your personal bubble isn't helping you realize the issues in the US and around the world. The best way for change to happen is to vote in people who will work towards it at the local, state and federal level. In the 90's I used to visit California in the winter, and loved it. The people were great, fun and friendly. My last few visits were really depressing, the racism and homelessness really got to me. So I quit going. It's worse there now, so I don't anticipate ever visiting again. It's just not safe, you're not even safe from police... so sad.

I went to the Atlanta suburbs a few years ago for corporate training (I was working in Canada for a US based company). There were people from all around North America there, who did not know each other before meeting there. What shocked me the most, even more than the constant subtext racism between people, in the news, everywhere basically, more than the senseless political debates where people take for one side just because, no matter the truth and lies, the arguments or even the crimes comitted by one side or the other, is the fact that 2 americans, never having met before, were talking about their prefered gun makes and ammunition types literally 5 minutes after having met the first time. THAT is unhealthy! THAT is scary! I just went with the flow and accepted it, and I kept noticing it for the 2 weeks I was there. In Canada, we talk about the weather to break the ice with strangers. In the states, you talk about guns. That is what we call gun culture and that, more than anything else, is why I'll never live in the US.\nOh, and just to make it worse, when I tried to explain why we did not feel like we had to have guns on our person in Canada, not a single American I talked to could ever begin to understand. Not centering your life around the fact that you can or cannot have a gun is just impossible for Americans, it seems.

I would of moved to the U.S. prior to Ronald Reagan. Since then it seems like money goes to the rich, who profit by sending it out of the country. The wealth and value for American workers has gone down drastically ever since. And everyone is bitter about it, so now they're taking it out on each other over minor stupid shit. This whole find a place that's okay feels so much like burying your head in the sand. It's sad that Americans would be more informed on reality if all sources of their media ceased to exist.

I would not consider moving to the states for any reason, but my reason at this point is that I’m terminally ill and disabled and I can’t even get travel insurance to be able to visit my family there. My mother’s family are all Americans. I had a lot of fun visiting them in my late teens, back in the early 90’s but now I wouldn’t even drive across the border to go shopping. Well, I do go across the border to Alaska, because that’s just an hour away, but Alaska is very different from the continental United States. And I only go to Skagway for the afternoon to get fish and chips. I welcome Americans to Canada with open arms, but I have zero desire to ever live or visit there. One at a time, on my terms, in my country, Americans are great, but your nation is falling apart at the seams. I don’t feel safe there at all.

In Canada you can be the poorest of the poor and get the same health care as almost everyone else. The very rich can choose to travel to get treatment elsewhere. No one in Canada is ever denied healthcare. We do have to pay for ambulances but there is goverment assistance for that. We do have to pay for medication but you can buy reasonablle copay policies for that. GO CANADA GO?

I'm Canadian and no way in hell would I ever live in the US. Sure, there may be cool places and stuff, but 1. no way would I give up the healthcare. 2. I'm disabled and in a wheelchair so can't offer anything work-related which would mean no health insurance or $. It would be a very bad thing for me.

Hmmm, let me see. Mass shootings, high infant mortality, high medical costs, backwards trends in women’s healthcare, high death rate by gun violence for children just for starters would keep me from moving to the US. We used to vacation in the US all the time. One of my husband’s dreams is to see the Smithsonian, but that’s never going to happen. We wouldn’t ever consider crossing the border anymore and I wish the US would keep its toxic politics on its side of the border and keep their hands out of Canadian politics.

I live in Canada. In 1984 I bought a house in Florida as a vacation home. Ten years later I sold it. I bought a house in Costa Rica. Best move ever. Look at what is happenning all over the U.S. and especially Florida. Canada in the summer and Costa Rica for winter vacation. LOVE IT.

Props Tyler you took that well. I lived in the states for over 10 years. CT, MA, NY, IN. Some of the nicest people I have ever met. Every place has faults if you look hard enough but you wont find more generous people than in America.\nCanada is my home and I love the culture and the people but I found Americans are just as nice and kind.\nIf you haven't lived there you can only judge by what you know. As for me I lived and traveled there since I was 20. In various States.\nIf you haven't been endeared to the Americans while living there you haven't been around the right people. I went to University in Seattle...beautiful, interesting city. I can't think of 1 reason why I would ever move to the United States. Canada is by no means perfect but I feel there are more pros than cons. Healthcare and safety are probably the top 2 pros. Born and raised here...proud to be a Canadian ????

I've been to 15 countries and out of all the hotels and stuff I've stayed in I've left things laying around like some money, wedding ring and never had a problem even in very poor countries.\n\n Except in one country where I left my wedding ring laying on the nightstand by the bed like I always do all over the world, and guess which country I had my wedding ring stolen out of all of them? It was in Canada where a maid came in and stole my fucking wedding ring. So now I don't have my wedding ring that I' had for 10 years because I made the mistake of going to Canada to see the Niagara falls.\n\n This was not in a fleabag hotel either it was the Hilton which was a very nice but overpriced place with no parking. I have no desire to ever go back to Canada again. If you do go to Canada hide your jewelry because the maids there will steal your stuff. I have a work visa for the US and go there often. I go to many places that are not in the cities. I'm actually in South Dakota as I write this and find it to be a very pleasant place. I generally find everybody to be very friendly but can't help feel there are some topics that I just don't feel comfortable talking about in fear of triggering a strong response. I like visiting but would not consider moving there to raise a family. There is just a much greater chance of volitivity there. \n One time, while dinning out, I had a guy ask me, that because I didn't have a gun, what would I do if someone came to my home to rob me at gun point. I told him it never happens. But he insisted many times, but what if they did. I told him that it's not something I'd ever thought about and that I probably had a greater chance of dying on the plane ride home than being shot by an armed robber in my own home. But he kept insisting. I eventually told him I would help the robber take my stuff out of the house because that is what I have insurance for. I could not believe that this guy did not understand the concept of NO ONE (other then criminals shooting other criminals in the city) having a gun. \n I actually do have a long gun at my place in the country but that's to keep me safe from large animals that may come out of the bush. It is locked up in a gun cabinet by law. I would never think of using it against another person. I'd go to jail for sure if I did. Many of my friends hunt and have several guns but the restrictions on where and when you can use them and the strict storage requirements help ensure that they are not travelling around with a gun at hand. There are actually a few places in Canada where I've been that you do, or should, have to travel with a gun but these are remote areas of the country with large predatory animals. 99% of the population do not live in these areas.

Ever since Justin Trudeau was Prime Minister in 2015 a lot of Canadians have either moved to the United States to states like Florida and Texas, or they move out to the province of Alberta. Canadians and americans to the most part have similar values and views, and if a canadian can afford to move to the united states, they probably would especially under the dictatorship that we're living under right now

America is a beautiful country to look at, and I'm sure there are lots of beautiful people, but the arrogance of some of them is mind blowing. I recently watched the news footage of 911, I cried all the way through that, first out of compassion and next out of frustration. When people were jumping out of those towers, George Dubya was making a statement that terrorism would not stand in America. What did he think was standing in his face. The terrorists won that day. Then when they got Bin Laden He stands up and says we got him . Big deal you got one person , when there are dozens to take his place. No mention of other countries that helped them. , they have taken full credit for every war that ever happened. They wonder why the rest of the world hates that country. The sad thing is that 911 didn't teach them a thing. They brag about how they lost 3000 people and other countries only lost a few to terrorism. How sad that they think that way. You had a great president in Obama, but you have that 2 term rule and have been going downhill ever since. And our Canada's Prime minister is certainly nothing to be proud of. Politically he's no threat to anybody, but his own country. Mostly he is an immoral threat to his own country. But that's another vent for another day. I still pray every day for the world and that includes America, but I can't imagine what it will take to break them of that arrogance.
