The way you need to do these things is not to show up on the border, but to apply from where you are. He started by being illegal in the U.S., rather than actually applying for entry as a refugee. Then, years later, he showed up on the border of Canada, again without first applying. All nations must have laws that are enforced, else you have anarchy. I would venture to suggest that part of the problem is one of language barrier? He's been in the US for 15 years and he's been in Canada for 2, and even now, he doesn't speak or understand a word of English! If he desires to live in Quebec later, he will also need to speak French? He really won't go far in any English/French language country, if, after all that time, he hasn't mastered the most basic terms in anything but Spanish!

Canada doesn't seem to have a problem with Muslim immigrants

Well since Canada wants to act like America is being evil because we don’t want illegals, abuse of asylum, and anchor babies here, enjoy the illegals coming your way. Many of these nations acting outraged even citizens, don’t want the illegal problem and they themselves have tough immigration laws. Hypocritical to act like USA should just let anyone in.

This silliest part of this story is that if he could write a resume listing all that construction work that he has done he could easily find work that pays comparable wages to what he gets in Canada or the US in most Latin American countries. And he wouldn't even have to deal with documentation problems and culture shock. Construction businesses in those countries would be delighted to have workers capable of working to North American standards.

so what exactly is the problem? there are laws in canada - no you can't just walk in a stay and get benefits. if there is misinformation in the community migrating north, then who is at fault? if anyone from any country, regardless of race, creed, religion, sexual orientation - anything - thinks they can just go to another country with no strings attached they're crazy. I get the feeling this is meant to look like a racist issue - it's not. if you're white as snow, speak english and carry a bible, the rules are the same - you come legally, and go through all the paperwork and checks that are required.

I feel for Jose, yet I wonder why he is not angry with his own government, with his own country for making him feel it was impossible for him to live and work in his own country. Why can he not go back there? How is that system lacking and what can be done to change it so that people don’t feel forced to leave. I find it odd that no one ever reports on these South American governments - what are they doing so wrong that their own citizens are refugees from their own country. Why can’t we stop blaming and find a solution to this problem? Why is it framed that it is the United States or Canada’s fault for upholding immigration laws, their own countries insist upon them. it’s odd.

RE: Canadian healthcare, my wife broke both her hips in 2017 in two separate falls, she was admitted immediately to hospital without delay and operated on the next day (half hip replacement), after physio and occupational therapy she was discharged and provided Homecare, 16 times per week plus weekly Day Hospital. Our cost for both operations was roughly $160.00 for parking spots for me so I could visit her and about $140 in Tim Horton doughnuts for staff. The system does not have enough of certain types of specialists thus wait times for those specialists, and there are wait times for elective surgery. The system has not really been reviewed since its inception in the 1960s but making significant changes is the third rail of Canadian politics and a hard look is justified after 70 years. Re: illegal crossings; The gentleman in the video has a problem in that the US and Canada have signed a “safe country” agreement and neither will accept refugees from the other as both Canada and the US are deemed “safe havens”. These refugees are completely different from the people crossing the border illegally from the United States. This pales to the 75,000 boat people accepted after the fall of Saigon. Canadians have been generally accepting of refugees but wants the process guided by the rule of law. Immigrants are a separate from refugees and the rules governing their entries into Canada are different.

I don't know why all of Latin America thinks that the USA and Canada have the responsibility of taking care of the people from Latin American Countries. I say let them fix their own countries. Mexico for example, has every resource that the USA has. Coal, oil, natural gas, mineral mines of every type, timber industries, rich farm land, etc..... You name the resource, Mexico has it. I've spent plenty of time in Canada and it is not as flagrant as the states but racism is EVERYWHERE.... They are much nicer in Canada but its hurtful that people won't face the problem but rather turn the other cheek.

There are many problems with anti-immigrant rhetoric and one of them is the classification who is and who isn't an immigrant and the question of when does a person stop becoming an immigrant and become a Canadian? A significant portion of people living in Canada are first/second/third generation Canadians and so, how do we classify these people, are they immigrants or are they not? And what of their parents/grandparents who immigrated, are they? It's very important to note that without their ancestor parents, all these first/second/third gen Canadians will not be here and they are now 'Canadians' today because we had pro-immigration laws. Also, the idea of accessing services is by itself, very problematic. I spent the first 4 years of my life here paying high tuition fees as well as tax that are used to subsidize fellow Canadians' tuition fees yet I'm not able to access any government services. Following graduation, I worked as a worker on visa where my tax was no less than an average Canadian yet government services were very much inaccessible to me. It was only after I became permanent resident, that somehow everything suddenly became available to me. I have been tax paying 6-7 years before I became a PR here yet all those years, I wasn't able to access a single thing yet somehow, after I became PR, I'm eligible for everything? The tax argument doesn't make sense at all. I will be eligible to apply for citizenship in like a year and does that mean now I am one of you, Canadians?

I've sat back and waited for events like this to happen. Muslims go back to your country and stay the hell out of Canada. Nice video, Derek. I'm gonna add something you didn't even mention. Here in the U.S., there is the Patriot Act, and a growing Police State. Our liberties and Constitutional rights are being trampled by the day. Our privacy is being lost at an alarming rate, and there are more checkpoints than ever before, tighter security measures at airports than ever before, metal detectors even at high schools for students just to attend class, and worst of all shootings of innocent people by cops (often homeless, mentally ill, etc.) than ever before. I don't know for sure, but I don't think Canada has the degree of the same problems, and if they do, they certainly aren't at the magnitude that they are happening here in the states. Those shootings are about 2,000-3,000 just in the last year!! Please be careful, especially in California, and know your U.S. Constitutional rights if/when you get stopped on the road or anywhere else.

The best way to solve this problem is through education. Education is like a lighthouse that burns through the fog of religious rhetoric. As muslim people (and people of any religion, for that matter) become better educated, the grip of religion weakens and eventually disappears. It may take a few generations. I'm optimistic that Canada can beat this problem without violence.
