Came to Canada from Israel 25 years ago. That time, in 1998 Canada GDP per capits was 33% higher than that in Israel. Two years ago Israel left Canada behind. It is shame for Canada to be poorer than the very small country without mineral resources and without a single day of peace since 1948. \n\nI blame Canadians for that. Canadians love Socialism, which means nothing more than re-distribution of incomes by the Socialist governments. Socialism brings no equity but equal misery. \n\nAlso, Canadians love to pay taxes and have expensive real estate which they plan to use as a source of income during retirement.\n\nCanadians most of the time vote for socialists like Trudeau. \n\nThis is why I do not recommend to settle in Canada. This country has no hope in my view.

The solution must be to pass a law that prevents students from obtaining residency and citizenship. In this way, only real students will come.

They need to stop calling it a “housing crisis” and start regulating real estate to the degree that people can afford to live indoors. It is really a domestic humanitarian crisis. \nAnd I am confounded about what they expect immigrants to do when they get to Canada or the US in this situation. \nThis type of government negligence is rife in the the west today. I hope we can look past party affiliation and focus on policies that make sense for everyone.

Sad thing is, you guys are the forerunners of what is already coming in other places. \nI can say and confirm Sydney-Australia, is going down the EXACT SAME PATH. I currently pay $734.96 per month for my bachelor apartment in Parkdale, Toronto. All inclusive. I found the place in 2015, and it started at $660.00 per month. It's a smaller building where I know most of my co-tenants. Quiet neighbourhood most of the time. I've been one of the lucky ones for sure. I love this city! I'm from Peterborough and I will never move back. Some of the best memories of my life have been here. But you're right Alina, it has changed. Much like most other major cities in the world. The economic hardships being the #1 issue. Rent going up, wages staying the same, and inflation not slowing down. But with Toronto, the transit system is far behind the progress of cities like New York. Toronto should have multiple subway lines going east and west. Queen St. and Dundas lines for sure. The overall culture of the city is not as vibrant as it was during the 2010s. That could be Covid related. Or things are taking awhile to come back to pre-Covid form. But a lot of great venues and restaurants have been shutting down. And being replaced with the construction of condos. The real estate is insane here. It feels like things have gone downhill since the Raptors won the NBA championship in 2019. Because that really united everyone when there were a million people gathered for the parade. I'm hoping things turn around and there's more affordable housing for newcomers. I know I'm staying here for a while longer. Because of my cheap rent. And career attachments to the city. Yes actually I do have a comment or two. I think that Toronto has become the victim of either its own success as a multicultural, diverse and growing metropolis or the perceived idea that Toronto is the place to be. And what that brings with it? Yes, people who are interested in living the life and those who can afford it pay it. You said it very well, the city has become unaffordable to most people but the wealthy or at least those who are getting paid the best salaries and those who bank on real estate take advantage of this, be it the hype or reality since also, most job opportunities are still there. So to me the problem is with the lack of contro of the real estate market. And people who cant pay but for whatever reason live there just have to pay the price. The refugee situation is not surprising to me at all. We are struggling with affordable housing for crying out loud but we are also advertising to the world that we are that welcoming and peaceful society that those people can be part of. But at what cost. Toronto cannot continue like this if it will still be considered as a city for the people and not the wealthy and chronically increasing poor. No wonder they chose a progressive for a mayor and not a conservative or hard line liberal because people want change but not radically. People want to live in the best city they can having all necessary services and in peace and safety. So, there are so maby layers to pill here but again, the main reason why things have gotten the way they are is because they let real estate run unleashed. All the best, Alina.

While I identify and agree with the overall sentiment of this video, here is the problem Alina. As a somewhat successful tech person who came from nothing, I refuse to move out of a city to a culturally or globally lacking city due to “budget”. I tried spending time in BC and Nova Scotia in the capital cities. I could not spend more than a week in Saskatchewan. I can assure you that someone with decent skills and lifestyle would not be able to sustain their social and personal life, and mental health anywhere in Canada other than Toronto. If I spoke decent French, I’d say Montreal is a decent option. Vancouver is too lopsided as an international real estate haven, even though beautiful. So the problem is that Toronto is honestly the only city someone like me (and most my friends) would consider living in Canada, and we are all unfortunately being forced to move to the US. We are in our very early 30s so it’s still not too late to have a big move but none of us wanted to try out NYC or SFO much later than now. I hope things improve and we are able to move back to Toronto. But right now, unless you make $300k+, it’s impossible. And we are only able to make that money in the US (most of us). It’s simple: if the institution has the word college in it- you are being screwed. Your degree is worth toilet paper in Canada’s working world. The only institutions worth going to that give you a real recognized degree have the word UNIVERSITY in it - and unless you come from a richer country than Canada you can’t afford those institutions. We Canadians pay off our student loans for a decade for our UNIVERSITY degrees not college degrees.

Simple economics should dictate that if rents are so high that the majority can't afford them, they should drop. The peoblem is, there are a small number of people who are more than capable of meeting the high cost of rent and of real estate generally. This is indicative of how much economic inequality has grown in Canada, as it has throughout the English speaking world.

There is a massive real estate bubble in Canada. Toronto is way too expensive.

You are very lucky to be so gorgeous and able to work/model/get sponsors to pay for your lifestyle, and not have to live in Canada. Canada as a whole, the Western capitalistic society, as a whole as become extremely greedy. The interest rates in the Western countries went down to almost 0%, causing all the capitalists to borrow this free-money and gobbled up all the real estate, and they now dictate the rental market. Corporations as well as individuals who bought real estate before 2010 used their equity and got into the real estate flip-game and ABNB, and they are all rich. And yet they still gouge renters because they can. I would also leave Canada. But I am stuck here because I am poor. Canada/Toronto will not change. Once you're used to eating filet mignon, you will never settle for meat loaf. These landlords will never lower their rents as long as they hold all the cards. 10 years from now, Canada's birth rate will be negative because people who pay $700,000 for 500sq ft condos do not have kids. Nor can they afford them.

The homeless situation is man made created by Liberals. They opened boarder to the every one from across the world specially from African countries who flew their country for crimes.. Now its all over.. They also brought almost 2 million student without any housing and healthcare fix. Now I can see 4 to 5 students live in one room basement apartment each pay $700 a month.\n\nWe are now dropping below other G8 countries in terms of living standards. I remember back in early 90s when Harper was Prime Minister. He use to bring most wealthy business people to come here to open business and employ Canadian. Ford taking away rent control in 2019 to encourage more investors to build more properties killed the lower and working class. Built nothing but condos that mostly investors bought. Now rent is $2,500 for a 1 bedroom. Even with a modest 50k salary you barely getting buy. You need to make 100k in Toronto just to live a basic life. In Canada, more than half of people's income goes to rent or mortgage. This country has been bought and sold to the real estate. This is what happens when everyone treats real estate as an investment instead of a basic necessity. But enjoy your sky high property values. A house costs 1 million dollars now. Guess Canadians are all millionaires.

I am born and rasied in Toronto and I would have to say what is happening now in this city is do to the covid fallout. Toronto has always had higher rent then most Canadian cities but I think with the loss of jobs and and the rise in cost of living all over Canada due to covid I would say that Toronto is going through some hard times like everywhere eles in Canda. Unfortunately because it is the bigest city alot of people have moved here in the hope of a better life. I have noticed a rise in drug use but have not noticed a rise in violent crime. They do say that the TTC is got worse...Hard to say as I take the TTC every day across the city and have not noticed any diferance other then more and more people are useing it again. During covid the subway was empty and now all these people that have never used it before are having to learn how it all works and subway edict. I think media is making the subway seem worse then it is. To me it has not changed. I do agree the real problem is dealing with homeless that was more hiden but now is out in the open. Funding from all levels of goverment needs to help all big canadain cites more. I think Toronto will come back again to what it was pre-covid. Hopfully soon!!

To state the obvious, as long as housing demand greatly outstrips housing supply, the cost of living will remain ever challenging. Mixing basic human rights (like having a roof over one's head) with a profit incentivizing vehicle like real estate is...a bad mix, and will always be. But, hey, the world runs on making money and always has (but it does seem to be getting out of hand these days), so, what can you do? Go see a therapist and try to get a good night's sleep (if you're fortunate enough to have a roof to sleep under).

I used to live in Toronto and I left for different reasons 2.5 years ago. It is not the same place that I remember it to be. I understand that places change but it’s changing far too fast for me. I used to like going out to various independent shops (especially bookstores) and because of the condo boom a lot of these places can not exist anymore. I also liked going to places where the ttc struggles to go to (further out of the city) but having a car and dealing with traffic has gotten way worse. My other thing is the people. Years ago people would talk about fun things and now all they talk about is money, real estate, and traffic short cuts. I agree with the crime and the housing issues that you mentioned. It’s ok to visit but I try to get out of there (otherwise I’ll be spending all my money on parking)
