As President-elect Trump weighs up the tariffs he has promised to impose, it is important to understand who will pay them. \n \nThere is a popular misconception that when a country imposes tariffs on imported goods, it is punishing a foreign government or foreign firms. This is not a mistake made by economists. The tariff is paid at point of entry, and much of it goes to the government that imposed it. It is paid by the importer, a probable wholesaler, who passes it on in the form of higher prices for his or her customers.

Mexico has been imposing tariffs on Americans, and Mexican’s, for taking their cars over there for a long time. \n\nYou have to pay for a permit, along with a hefty deposit (depending on the vehicle year), to cross your vehicle into Mexico. You can cross into the border towns, but if you want to drive further in, you have to pay. \n\nThis is done to eliminate competition, instead of letting the market dictate the pricing. And if you don’t return your permit, you don’t get your deposit back and lose the ability to cross any vehicles for life. No, how is that fair?!\n\nAnd you STILL see Mexican nationals buying vehicles here, and just paying the hefty tariffs, just to legalize their American vehicles in Mexico. \n\nWe can just start there, and do the same thing to them.
