Those Muslim women are laughable saying it was a choice they made for themselves. Just look at the women who were raised Muslim and went apostate. If they didn't fall victim to an honor killing then they went into hiding. Is that really a choice women should have to make?

The niqab doesn't bother me because it oppresses women. It bothers me because I don't know what's underneath.

I don't mean to be rude but how is burqa a choice? Why would anyone want to dress up in a black robe covering from head to toe, except eyes and sometimes eyes too? I know it's religious thing but how can one make it a personal choice to wear it? That too women? It's ok for men, they only have so many colours in their attire to choose, but women? Seriously? I think burqa should be for Muslim men who are ok with wearing the same colour everyday (in general). I like hijab, the head scarf, it comes in so many colours and it's so pretty, hijab makes you beautiful. Not burqa or niqab.

Canadians have lived their lives being seen and heard, since the beginning. Seeing the faces of hidden Canadians, and to hide one's face becomes suspicious. Women of the Middle East should be GLAD, if not more, to have found a Country where they can continue to embrace their religion WITHOUT hiding their faces. Where are the women's feminist groups? I remember cries of 'Male chauvinist pig' back in the '70s and the title was well deserved by most men back then. Muslim fundamentalist men today are poster boys for that title and I hear no outcry from the feminists who have been battling for full equality with men for the last 100 years. Here we have subjugation of women in the name of religion and the feminists are silent. Hijabs and burkas are relics of the Dark Ages and have no place in modern western society.

Here's what gets me... growing up as a kid, I witnessed many Polish women wearing babushkas. Nobody ever complained about them or even batted an eye. But covering your face when going into a bank or working with the public is NOT a good idea.

the niqab is not a part of Islam, not mentioned in the Koran, it dates back to pre-Islamic Arabia, it was invented by Bedouin (nomadic) women to cover their faces as a necessity to protect the skin of their faces from sun rays and dust storm. This is why bedouin men wear the litham (niqab for men).\n\nNetiher the Quran nor Muhammed has ever told women to wear anything beyond the Khimar (head cover that does not cover the face).

The niqab looks ridiculous.  It looks like what a bank robber or someone with a facial defect would wear.  The hijab should not be mandatory either.   Even the Quaran is not specific about the modest attire it prescribes (for both sexes).  There is too much pressure for Muslim women to put on this stupid attire.   It's pathetic that Muslims have to fear speaking out to even mildly criticize their religion and truly horrifying that most Muslims actually support killing people for leaving the religion.

I would like to come and experience and be educated more about Islam I am a new Muslim Canadian women but with my husband not here with me in Canada I find it hard to learn on my own. I would love to come to Ontario to know more about Islam if there is any chance for my Muslim brothers and sisters to help me with this Please . Thank You

Islam is not a religion - its an ideology! The basis is in the Quran, Hadiths and in Sharia. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. In Saudi Arabia, non-muslims have to wear the hijab. So if Muslims plan to stay in Western countries, they have to unveil just like every other Western woman. Besides, you don't know if it is a man or a woman in burquah and it's frightening. They talk about women in Islam wearing the hijab, but how many of them really pracitise true Islam. Why are not wanting to go to Saudi Arabia. Double standards - they want the Western lifestyle and money and not the Saudi Arabian lifestyle.
