One of the problems that perennially gimps our economic development is our low population relative to Canada's geographical size. This means that there are fewer people available to contribute to economic growth, particularly in vital sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture and services. This can limit the scale of production and result in decreased productivity, as there isn't a sufficient workforce to fully utilize available resources.\n\nThis can also pose challenges in terms of infrastructure development. Building roads, railways, and other transportation networks across such a vast territory becomes more expensive and logistically complex when there are fewer people to benefit from and support these systems. As a result, it can hinder trade, transportation, and overall connectivity within the country.\n\nAdditionally, a smaller population means a smaller local market. Domestic demand for goods and services may not be as robust as what we would find in our neighbor to the south, which can limit growth opportunities for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises. This can discourage investment and innovation, as companies may find it difficult to achieve the economies of scale needed to compete globally.\n\nThen you have the shortage of skilled labor in certain sectors. With fewer people available, finding qualified professionals, particularly in specialized fields, can become challenging. This can lead to a brain drain, where talent and expertise emigrate to other countries - again, like the United States - depriving Canada of vital skills and knowledge.\n\nFinally, our low population has a negative impact upon the government's revenue base, limiting the amount of revenue generated through taxation. This can constrain government spending on infrastructure (particularly in the energy sector - when was the last time we built a nuclear power station?), public services (e.g. health care), and social programs, which are crucial for economic development and societal well-being.

I think these problems have come to plague almost all big cities in the developed countries in the last decade. Canada, like Australia, the UK,, USA, NZ, Netherlands etc is still cursed with the millstone of the failed political ideologies of the last forty or so years. These mitigate against the solutions: the end of mass immigration and a huge home building program. Expensive housing is the root of the problem.

We are Belgian, living on Vancouver Island since 2000 and I do feel you, many good points and we are certainly considering the 'leaving' option. Portugal comes to mind cause we do mis 'real' people, as you mentioned, hard to make deep, long lasting friends. Here I learned that every moment, encounter and meeting is unique and so to are the people you get to know, they vanish if you don't keep up. Back to Europe, not back to Belgium.

I feel like government and cities were really complacent with the incredible speed at which the real estate price has been increasing for the last decade. They were complacent because it benefited them with higher property taxes. However, this very short term view by the government had led to a social crisis. Who the fuck can afford apartments at 3000$/month. There is no solution but to crash the real estate market but this will also lead to a worse social crisis.

Unfortunately I was born there and wasted 23 years of my life there...but I made up for it spending the last 24 in Japan. God works in mysterious ways. :D It's just fucked up that I own 13 homes in Japan and even if I sold ALL of them, I could probably barely afford a DUMP in Vancouver...or maybe just an old condo. Salam...Torontonian here. Last few years i have been in the same boat but cant decide where to move. With 3 little girls and all the reasons you also mentioned i dont see a future living in this chaging environment. I did grow up in UAE so i have experience living in the gulf and have visited recently, its got expensive and cant stand the sutle discrimination that exists within the system. Next, moving to places like Malaysia, not sure about finding quality work with good income buts thats one of the top in the list, with turkey and souther USA (i know). \nGood luck on your journey and keep posting :)

It's obvious that you have never lived outside of Canada. Canada is probably one of the last countries in the world that accepts people for who they are and has a decent level of respect for belief systems. I get that you want to raise your children in a better environment, but trust me when I tell you this... you are walking into a world of disappointment. Canada itself is about 15 years behind other countries when it comes to this downwards spiral you are speaking of. Sadly, you will find out soon enough that this utopia you want to find, simply doesn't exist and you will discover you have left the variable comforts and safety of Canada behind. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but am simply sharing what I discovered when I searched for the same things. I think L. Frank Baum said it best.... if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. If you are lucky in life you will discover that the world doesn't stop turning for you, and that the world that you dream of for your children must be created from within. That being said, it is good to travel and trying different ways of living is a wonderful education for your children. This is a very thoughtful and balanced review. As a retired Canadian who had a good job for most of my life, I'm saddened by the decline in almost all areas of life, lifestyle and and people's aspirations in this country. This decline actually seems quite rapid, I would say from 2015 onwards. Housing in major centres was expensive, but it has skyrocketed in the past decade. There has been a decline in many institutions: 1. health-care, especially noticeable since the pandemic that coincided with many boomer medical staff retiring, but also by our sclerotic institutions refusing to enable foreign-trained doctors to work here. Many foreign-trained doctors in the Vancouver area are doing jobs way below their qualifications while many people cannot even get a family doctor. Crazy. Econonically, there seems to have been no plan at all from the government as we exited the pandemic. At least the US had a plan, to 'build back better'. Our government just floats along as if everything is fine, when the decline is very visible especially to older Canadians. We have admitted 1/2 a million people a year from overseas, so our economy should reflect this and show an upswing. But no, we're in a 'technical recession' as of December and probably a real recession as of last week. I have never voted Conservative in my life, but Trudeau is a flaky dimwit with a famous name who has no clue what he is doing. A fool, in fact. He's mismanaged our foreign relations beyond belief, and nothing has improved domestically. When Pierre Poilievre says 'Canada is broken', I believe it. We deserve much better leadership; in Canada's case, the rot does come from the top. Justin the entitled idiot is much more like his mother than his father.\n\nLong rant. Visiting the Netherlands, Britain, France - everywhere I go in the west it’s the same. Many of your numbers are wrong sweetie. Here are the facts;\n2 years ago, you would go to IGA (where food is fresh but it is pricey), you would get out with 2 bags of groceries for about 120$. Today, it is 180$ for the same 2 bags. this is NOT a 10% increase... but almost the double in price!\n\nRent, in Quebec province, have gone from around 1,000$ to 2,400$ in less than 5 years, and each time a tennant leave his place, the landlord rise (against the law but nobody can do anything) the rent often by 25 to 40%!!! The Demand is so high, that he can refuse you for any reason (including racism, children, pet, smokers) he can think of. Again, this is against the common law but in truth, there is nothing anybody can do, unless you can bring him to court, which takes lots of money...\n\nSo in reality, from the last 5 years, almost everything has double in price and salaries have barely start to rise (mostly due to unions who revolted) but if you are not part of one, your salary basically stayed the same.\n\nA very good advice, don't come to Canada. The biggest cause for the cost of living increase we've seen in Canada in the last decade can be largely attributed to government policy regarding immigration. Not the fault of anyone coming here. Foreign immigration agencies and the Canadian government are selling people false hopes. They are doing newcomers and Canadians a disservice. Unfortunately the government has no intention to put the brakes on the flow of new immigrants, even when there is not enough housing for everyone. We are at a breaking point in many cities and immigrants are being blamed, when the blame should be squarely on governments at all levels.

Canada is suffering because of bad leadership. The government is unable to step in in housing, because that would mean lowering the global value of it. Unable to step in in services, because it is stuck with unions that support laziness instead of competences and performances. Unable to step in in anything because it is controled by a literal mafia that totally surrounded the government and pull the strings of every ministers who are no longer there for the people they represent, but afraid of being killed by those mafiosies. \n\n So the honest worker is mostly doing 32k a year with charges that are about 30k a year. That means most people are going paycheck to paycheck, unable to afford savings, nor think about retirement. Unable to afford to improved their housing situation, paying rent that is so high that it should be consider a crime. \n\nIn fact, i predict many landlord will be killed in the coming years, by people losing their mind, because of incredible amount of stress they are suffering from. You think i am joking? Just the last 2 days, 2 woman lost their life because of being beaten to death by their husband... \n\nThis country is failing and failing fast because it doesn't take care of its population anymore... it is a doom country and immigration was the nail in the coffin. The system is unable to sustain such a demand. The next year is gonna see an incredible rise in criminality, and i foresee mass murdering events, like there was in the US.

My sister have Canadian citizenship. After 3 years leaving there she said - that is no place for intelligent people and she and her Canadian husband moved to Europe . She had a USA citizenship as well but ??‍♀️ for the last 20 years they have been Belgium citizens

After all that Canada has done to help you, you still don't want to stay?? Then leave!! On your way out, try to ask people who try to immigrate to China how their experience is like. Ask them how long they need to stay in China to even get permanent residency and how much they have to pay to send their children to school in China. Jesus! Goodbye!!

Ok....I've lived in Singapore for the last 33 years, graduated from the University of Alberta with an Electrical Engineering degree. Worked 1 year in the arctic in 1989 then was offered a job in Singapore in 1990 and never looked back. There are MASSIVE engineering opportunities in Asia, its nothing like Canada. \nIf you have to deal with the Canadian government from outside the country your quickly realize that Canada is run by....children. The high commission is a joke, the over seas PP stuff is a joke, its all a joke. They could just copy the legislation that Australia has but they don't, it a complete amateur joke.\nCrime in Singapore? There is almost zero. \nTaxes? Singapore taxes are 1/4 of that in Canada plus there are no capital gains tax in Singapore. One of the reasons I stayed here was that I wouldn't lose have my gains on my stock options. \nInflation is caused by government spending and Peter Pan(Justin Trudeau, the man child) spends-and-spends. He has no plan to balance the budget nor pay down what is already borrowed. This causes inflation.....and it will continue. Why? Given that, I would like to suggest, if feasible, considering a move to Medina (City of our Prophet). If that's not an option, Qatar could be a suitable alternative or Turkey . Lastly, Kuwait could be another potential destination for consideration.

You tend to get high taxes in places with free health care. Many use Canada as a bridge country to the US. In the US health care is very expensive. Many companies you would work for offer free health care plans for single individuals ( if you have a family it costs a lot ) but those plans have such high deductibles and co-pays that you can't afford to use it. Most US health care plans have very high deductibles ad co-pays making it extremely expensive. Then when you retire and start getting social security which is not much money by the way, you also get Medicare which also has a monthly charge around $150 mth. It doesn't cover everything. It does not cover dental or vision. It does not cover all your hospital stay which tends to occur as you get older. Most Americans end up having to sell their homes that they spent a lifetime paying off, to pay medical bills and end up on Medicaid which is the free last resort medical care and end up in a nursing home to end your days. Most nursing homes are bad. You end up in a 2 person room, in diapers, up for meals and back to bed, diaper changed 2 times per shift and one shower per week done by whomever in the communal shower room. Shelves until you die, which many do very quickly out of despair. After working your whole life that is the prize folks in the US.

When you already don't have an adequate supply of affordable housing,\n the last thing you'd want to do is add more People to create even more demand and need. Our current leader taught Gym and Theatre, obviously not Math.

I am not from North America. But I too think Toronto is a fine city. Once upon a time maybe back in the 1970s,80s 90s and early 2000s would have been one of the best cities in the world to live in but these days not anymore. Still looks the same like in the past but it has changed the high cost of living and other changes mean standard of living has dropped in the last 10 years. Still a nice city though but hopefully it will bounce back to how the city was in the distant past 2 decades ago and earlier.

It's a disgrace how Canada has been governed the last 8 years. Government debt is through the roof and that burden has been passed directly to the once so called middle class now the working poor. I am leaving Canada as I can only see life and standard of living dropping considerably. If they stop the idiot policies now, it will take a generation to recover, but i hardly see that happening. The climate activists, gender activists and health fear mongering is controlling policy and brainwashing children. Canadians will accpet things.
