Born and raised in Ontario, from immigrant parents. What I can say is Toronto was holding on before the pandemic and once it hit things fell apart. Parts of Toronto look like a Batman movie. What's wrong with Toronto? People who live in the city don't want to pay higher property tax like every other municipality surrounding it, so they can't pay for everything. Maintenance is neglected, very few rental buildings being built, a safe injection site at a tourist area (Younge-Dundas Sq) isn't really smart. Add the fact Canada was coasting on a good reputation internationally, so all types of people coming here seeking refugee status, which fine we are compassionate helpful people but at a certain point its too many people. Things aren't being run to benefit people and improve their lives, it more feels like we're patching things with duct tape and saying its fixed.

Been in Canada for approximately 25 years. I can say that the effect that Canada has on a legal immigrant is neither here nor there. If you can make lemonade out of any lemon you’re dealt, you will thrive in Canada (and anywhere else where your efforts are not overwhelmingly quashed by corruption, blatant racism or other forms of segregation). \n \nLynn, I was a lecturer in Kenya, went back to school here in Canada after wallowing in culture shock the first year, then circled back to teaching in college again after an arduous journey in school, but this time in a different field. \n \nAfter becoming a single mother of four kids, I had to also hustle on the side to build a small business empire along my life’s ladder. Partnership with God, goal clarity, the get-up-and-go, and relentlessness truly work. It isn’t the size of the dog but the fight in the dog that does it, regardless of where you live. \n \nThe starting point for a new immigrant can be very low due to the weather, unpreparedness and culture shock, but if you know that the only way is up, and are self-motivated, those challenges are soon behind you as the tests become testimonies. \n \nBy comparison people have more human rights here regardless of their status. The wheels of justice grind slow but they do grind fine. Women and children have equal rights with men. Politicians are mostly there to serve not necessarily to exploit. \n \nOpportunities for self-development galore - including being trained to become employable and going to school at any age (sometimes for free while you are still at the bottom of the ladder). There are food banks so you never go hungry if it came to that. The disabled are better treated with dignity. \n \nThere are prolonged parental leaves for both moms and dads for up to 18 months. Commensurate with earnings, parents under certain thresholds are given Canada child tax benefits and other supplements for each child under 18 years of age. \n \nDepending on the number of kids and their ages, the money can add up handsomely. Not to mention that there’s no tuition to pay for primary and high school students. Tuition fees start at post-secondary level. \n \nTo see a doctor is free as it is paid for by taxes. It the meds that you and/or your insurance pays for. Some medical equipments may be paid for by either or both the individual/insurance and the government depending on eligibility. \n \nBy and large, there’s cleanliness of common spaces. There’s also safety and relative peace. At least wherever I have lived, I can’t tell you how many times I forgot to lock my door with impunity. \n \nThere’s a lot more stressful work here in my opinion, but like you said Lynn, systems work a lot more efficiently and effectively. \n \nThe elephant in the room is the extra hard work that those living abroad must put in to fulfil expectations back home. Also known as black tax, the overwhelming financial dependency of relatives on their diasporan loved ones places undue stress on many here, especially because there are no short cuts to getting money here. \n \nAnyway, Lynn, thanks for such a great topical issue you’ve shared. I blame the agencies, I blame the people themselves who go just crazy when they are told how much they will earn, I blame to our people for not getting the right information that they end up being refugees, I also blame people of lack of honesty, integrity and openess...others are cheated just like: just come as a visitor halafu uishie...which is not good at all. How do we know before they step foot in the US if they are convicted murderers or people that have a history of trafficking people? Can anybody interview these people and get a feel for why they are fine with sleeping on the streets and if they know if a lot of the people coming here are dangerous? I've seen 4 interviews all by citizens and they all said they have considered going back home because there are so many cartel people being planted all around the United States. I understand some of these people want a better life and that's fine..just please allow yourself to be background checked enough to make sure you aren't a danger to any of the citizens of this country

I have been in Canada for more than 20 years. The cost of living is very high. Housing in Toronto is very expensive, it is better in small towns.\n\nThe most important thing is to come here as a skilled worker. The Canadian immigration website has all the information. \n\nLife overall in Canada is not bad. The government really takes care of the people. Schools are free, and so is health care. The unemployment rate is very low. If you want to work, you will get a job.\n\nMy advice especially for those who are doing fairly well in their countries to stay. I think it is more suitable for young skilled people and those with young children. \n\nWe should also start paying taxes in our countries to develop infrastructure and start holding our governments accountable.\n\nThe young lady in the video is a bid overdramatic. She is earning more than the average worker. She should be managing fine except if she lives in expensive cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

People make mistakes comparing Canada with America. In Canada even to get survival jobs without a work permit isn’t easy. You need a work permit. No under the table jobs available and employers here don’t want to risk employing people under the table because they do not want to risk being fined after they get caught. Canada has also housing crisis even for Canadians. Shelters are mostly designed for people experiencing homelessness and also living with drugs and alcohol addiction. In USA you can live and work when you are still illegal not the same in Canada. Do your research before you get on a plane to Canada.

Here in US average house mortgage is sh210,000 a month. Average income sh400,000 a month. Then you have bills and taxes. My niece who just came from Kenya last year on work visa is making sh13 million a year as an RN. That’s sh 1.1 million a month. I think she’ll be just fine! My advice, get a bachelors degree in Kenya , apply for masters program over here, graduate and apply for a work permit. Or get a two year nursing program (can even do online internationally), work in Kenya for 2-3 years, then come here through work visa. Or apply for green card and come with a work permit. People who suffer the most are undergraduates and visitor visa holders with no work permit. They work for minimum wage under the table.

Beware of the single narrative. He’s speaking from his own experience, but it’s not the same as everybody’s. I’ve lived in Canada now for 4 years…got my citizenship this year. I lived in Nigeria for the 10 years prior to moving to Canada, and I also schooled and lived in the UK before that, so I speak with a wealth of diverse experiences. \n\nBefore you move to Canada or anywhere else for that matter, do the following:\n\n1. Research the country you’re moving to…what jobs are in demand, how that aligns with your qualifications…if you need to recertify or retrain in a different field. Many people move here thinking “oh I was a bank manager in Nigeria, so I’ll move here and become a bank manager”. It doesn’t work that way. The streets of Canada are littered with qualified medical doctors who drive Uber because they didn’t understand how difficult it would be to be certified to practice here.\n\n2. Find role models who are living the life you aspire to, or who have made similar moves and seek advice or guidance, and learn what they did right/wrong. Don’t just assume because your friend moved here, you can also move here and live the same life. You don’t share the same life experiences, history or have the same network.\n\n3. Before you immigrate physically, you have to immigrate mentally…be in the right mindset to live in a new country, understand their culture and learn to adapt. If you’re expecting to leave Nigeria and move to Canada to live a Nigerian lifestyle with “owambe” parties every weekend, or having 4 cars and 3 housemaids, then you’re still living in Nigeria mentally. Even Justin Trudeau does not drive 4 cars.\n\nI work in tech, so I knew that with God’s grace I’d find a way to succeed here. My wife worked in a Nigerian bank, and was able to transition to tech after we arrived here. Our combined annual income is roughly $500k, and we both work less than 40 hours a week, and I believe God will continue to bless us. I have easily 20 or 30 friends and colleagues who moved within a year or two of each other, and everyone is doing fine and working in tech jobs paying 6-figures. \n\nDon’t be discouraged by people’s failures and hardships. With the right planning and mindset, you can achieve your goals in any country. Reach out to people on LinkedIn, build a network and ask for advice (constructively)…many like us are more than willing to help.

I feel very safe in downtown Toronto because I am accustomed to it. I've never experienced any issue with the homeless and continue to talk to them, offer them food IFFFF they just happen to be pan-handling and often hug them to make them very SEEN. I feel safer in downtown Toronto at 3 am then I do when the 905'ers (suburban types) come to party in the entertainment district or around any French-separatist bc of how they are liable to treat me for my lack of decent conversational French. And IF guns are reported, I have to the thank the US for smuggling them in. \nFinally - as for health care - I believe its breaking down... our hospitals are beginning to fail us. The decline in health care is SO evident, BECAUSE anytime the Conservative party is in provincial legislative power they drop medical and education funding. I believe medical funding is being dropped purposefully to manipulate the population's thinking in order to have us eventually\nvote FOR privatization of health care. I NEVER MIND PAYING TAXES - WHAT I MIND... IS HOW OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE BEING SPENT... it all depends on the party in power. I would pay 40% income tax happily IFFFF our tax dollars were devoted to services mirroring the way Scandinavian countries do - they invest it WELL in their municipal services rather rather than blow it. \nOur federal and provincial bureaucrats are sucking. Canada’s secret weapon will backfire. Our healthcare and infrastructure are not ready for record high immigration. Housing is beyond hopeless, with insane prices and record low construction in the pipeline. Only the wealthy immigrants will settle here fine. Most will struggle to pay rent and expensive tuitions for the chance to land a good paying job. Canada has very few companies that are world class or highly competitive on the international level. I am Indian and if I had to immigrate I would only choose english speaking countries except UK, I am fine with USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND. But I can't, I have too much duties in my own country here, I have to look after my Grandpa, Grandma, mom, dad, sis, uncle who is in his 50s and ill, so...... Immigrating is not an easy task, people who might hate immigrants should know a lot of them had to sacrifice.

I have mixed feelings about this video. This video does a good job outlining the immigration process but it does not highlight any of the negative consequences of immigration that Canada is experiencing. One of the main reasons why cost of living is so high in Toronto and Vancouver is precisely because we have so many immigrants coming in without enough housing supply. This is by design because politicians and the upper class have a vested interest in keeping real estate prices high because so much of their net worth is tied up in the housing market.\n\nAnother negative is that employers hire immigrants working low skilled jobs and pay them less than Canadians because the immigrants are willing to be taken advantage of since they're just happy to have a job in Canada which pays better than their country. \n\nAnother myth that gets repeated is that Canadian takes immigrants out of compassion and unfortunately a lot of Canadians believe this. It was never about compassion, it's about bringing more people to 1) pay taxes to support our social welfare as Canadian birth rates decline and boomers retire, 2) keep housing costs high and 3) pay immigrants lower wages for the same work because immigrants are fine being exploited since they have a job in a first world country.\n\nAnother problem is the cultural shift. In the most immigrant-dense regions you'll find that many immigrants themselves surprisingly don't want more immigrants coming to Canada because they see these negative consequences. The people who are most pro-immigration have no problem cramming 8+ people in a basement and exploiting their labour because they make enough money to live in communities that immigrants can't afford, and so they don't have to deal with the cultural shift that's taking place. This is NOT the fault of immigrants, but rather the politicians who put economic growth over quality of life. Over HALF the people in the GTA weren't born in Canada, so they didn't go through our school system and have no connection to our culture. Canada is unfortunately going to become very racist over the next 10-20 years as Canadians start feeling like outsiders in their own country. It's somehow considered racists to criticize the effect of multiculturalism on social unity, yet the cultures we accept in Canada only became distinct cultures because of monoculturalism.

1. While McDonald's was originally created in the US there is a 2nd version and its 100% Canadian. After the u.s. McDonald's began franchising one of the brothers became so disgusted with the lack of regulation in the US on what is considered 'food' he moved to Canada and relaunched the chain. While the restaurant named remains the same and a handful of the main burgers the two companies are completely separate and have nothing to do with one another.\n\n2. Gov work, nurses, doctors, teachers, etc have a regulated minimum wage of 7.25 are you ....... kidding me??? 3. The US has no paid maternity leave u have the baby take 2 weeks off unpaid and back work 4. Server's make 2.13 + tips an hour ...... 5. The federal and state government recommend homes in the city have sewage plumbing BUT it is not required. There are literally houses in the southern states with the toilets flushing right into the front or backyard. 6. Perfectly fine to pay a man more than a woman in the US because a woman isnt a man. 7. And if a woman literally becomes a man by changing 'her' name + physically in appearance via surgery/hormones/whatever she still won't get paid the same as a man because she still not viewed as a man: no gender rights. 8. Where's the healthcare when the US has the highest taxes in the world??? 9. Classist. 10. No regulated education. Literally there is no rules on teaching the students these days are learning absolutely nothing. There's no such thing as regulating education in the US anymore 11. The country is over 33 trillion dollars in debt..... There was a time I would have. My father and Grandfather grew up in New York city as children and spoke highly of the States. Since 2016 I would seriously not consider living there. The gun violence that occurs their has gotten to the point that it has to be especially eggregious before it makes the news. The cavalier attitude towards guns and gun saftey is disturbing even from your politicians. it would be a recipe for loosing your privalege to own a firearm in Canada if you did what many of us see americans do with their guns. Open carry. Not allowed. Concealed carry. Not allowed. There are courses you need to take and pass on firearm saftey and gun use here, before you are given the privaledge of owning a firearm. Those firearms need to be stored properly or carried in cases at all times when not in use \n\nThat being said I have done those courses and I own guns. Rifles to be precise and a shot gun I use for hunting food. Pistols are not easy to get here and you can only use them on a range. The only people legally carrying pistols in public are the police.\n\nHealthcare is fine if you are young and healthy, with a job. If i showed up at 53 with a handfull of pre-existing conditions, I would be in bad shape.\n\nYour record on lgbtq+ and a woman's right to bodily autonomy is back slipping to the 1950's. I want to augment your point about the healthcare thing: Not everything is free here. For example, you’re not charged for your 5 minute consultation with a medical professional - all too often eager to write you a prescription, tell you you’re fine, and get the next healthcare number in the door (after his piss/smoke/coffee/shit *[in that order]* break) - and for which you just waited 45 minutes past the appointment time, getting sneezed on by at least 6.48 different people in the waiting room. But the pharmacy doesn’t take that prescription note as payment for whatever re-labelled chemical lobotomy Dr. Duckweed has planned for you, that’s coming out of your pocket! Unless you have health benefits from your job, private health & life insurance is the *superior* (but like how Borat says it) option.

You keep saying that the US health care system works fine for most people unless something big or unusual happens. That’s not a working system. A health care system should be something that people who need HEALTH CARE can benefit from. If only healthy people who don’t need to use it are okay with it, it’s broken. It’s the equivalent of offering cheap cars to people but only to those who don’t have a driver’s license but, as soon as you get your license, you have to pay top price.

Well, as a Canadian, I guess i'll pitch in.\nWould I move to the US? The short answer is no. But I will explain more in detail.\n\nFirst, I do not see any advantages to the US compared to Canada. Americams often tout their country as the beacon of freedom and the land of opportunities, but I don't feel that Canada is so different there. We're actually higher on the world freedom index, and its not like our economy was in shambles and everyone dirt poor... We pay more taxes, fine, but we also get more services in return, and that last part has the advantage to remove a big layer of worry. Like, for healthcare, I don't have to worry if i'm covered by insurance or not, or if the insurance carrier will drop me on some technicality. I'm a citizen. All the basic needs are covered; no questions asked (and the healthcare quality is not half bad. We just prioritize urgent cases over non-urgent; so if you go to the hospital for something non-urgent, you will wait, and more urgent cases will pass before you. Annoying when it happens, but I understand and agree with that in the end)\n\nSecond, I do see a lot of disadvantages. All the points raised in the video are valid, from the private-sector healthcare system, the gun control laws (or lack thereof), the social policies and legislation in some states; they don't agree with me.\n\nI think it comes down to some specific social and cultural ideas that are prevalent or at least present in a substantial manner in the american society. Bear in mind that I am generalizing here, not every american believes these points, but many do. I'm talking about ego, nationalism/patriotism, secularism etc.\nI feel that the US often has a really overinflated vision of itself. Like, the idea that America is the best. At everything. Wich is factually not true, but this idea also poisons the debate on many issues, and tends to limit social introspection that could lead to real advances.\n\nI've also noticed that the american basic school system is strongly patriotic. Everyone in the US is taught a lot about the US themselves in school, but not much about the rest of the world. Not great for open mindedness and introspection when you have little comparison points.\n\nAndlets not delve into the religious aspect. I've seen a poll somewhere where 48% of americans were AGAINST the separation of church and state. For me thats not only insane, its dangerous. It fits the individualistic mentality where people can more easily start thinking that their way is THE way. It creates a very polarized society much more prone to high volatility.\n\nSo, yeah, no, I wouldn't live in the US. I'd much rather stay in Canada where i don't have to worry if I get sick or hurt, if some agressive drunk idiot in a bar is armed, or if some fundamentalists from some religious congregation is gonna be able to try to politically force their point of view.

I had considered it once, about 25 years ago. I had friends to move to and everything, but my mother's cancer came back and I decided not to. I think it would have been fine in the past but given the circumstances that have evolved over the last 10 years - no, not to live. There are tons of beautiful and interesting places to visit in the US and I love visiting my friends. There are also tons of nice people in the US, but no, I would never move there.

As a legal immigrant it’s kind of sad for me to see that people think they can just walk into the states. Our family had to jump through hoops to get in. I understand the situation in Venezuela because I live in Mexico now, but the fact of the matter is, many of them can stay in other countries and do just fine. I know many venenzuelans in Mexico who are making a living. Mexico is very generous with humanitarian visas, even for Haitians. They are prioritized more than any other groups. But they don’t want to stay in Latin America…. The US is some kind of fantasy for them. Why don’t they rush their capital this way?

I am a for immigrants but this need to be fixed. How to fix it, is charge American a $10,000 fine if you hire a illegal. Then make these people apply from home where we have time to check there background and then given a date to come. A wall does not work so we need drones and more people on the boarder. Most of these people do not and we only need so many fruit pickers. Also I think new immigrants should be required to take a class to learn the ways of the country so they do not accidentally cause conflicts and problems.

I came to the states when I was little unfortunately I had to start working I was 15 I worked in a restaurant so i could support my sick mother in my country then I learned English and moved into a different job I never had the opportunity to go to the school since Noone would supported me !! I fall in love with some US girls we have 2 kids she worked sometimes I never pushed her to do so ! I tried to fix papers but the lawyers took my money and never did nothing about it ! I got into a traffic incident I got a ticked and fine once I payed off I get caught and sent back to a place I should call home !! I don't know nobody here don't know the place anymore !! dangerous people crazy !! my kids abandoned in the states now probably their mother asking for help to the government? who knows the last thing I heard is she was selling what it used to be our properties! I don't have contact with my kids anymore ! is horrible then we have this people just going there and getting asylum??? not fare!
