If you really seek asylum you'll be ready to do it legally. If you don't you'll face the consequences which should have always been applied. People panic because they think that it's now impossible to cross the borders but it's always been that way before the Trudeau/Biden debacle happened. If not doing so already why doesn't ICE have checkpoints where ALL buses and taxis are stopped and their passengers check for their immigrant status. It used to be known that at certain times during the day, various border crossing points weren’t manned just open. I can almost guarantee that’s not happening anymore. Years ago I was coming home from Montreal and waited for someone to come out and check my paperwork and license, someone heading north shouted over that no one was there until 6 so just go. I shouted back that I thought someone had to check my car and paperwork. The other guy said if you’re not worried about your stuff being checked, just go. I seriously waited weeks to hear something about it, nope, crickets…

In Toronto Canada, they are people who specialized in crossing Mexican migrants across the border into the US from the Montreal side. Nothing new.

I went to New York in like 2017, flew to Canada on a ETIAS VISA, and traveled there for a while, then crossed the border by foot on the Rainbow Bridge (Niagara Falls), and took a Greyhound from Buffalo to New York. Of course we had to pay for our AirBnB and hotel ;(\nBut then it was all LEGALLY, so it makes sense that you don't pay have to pay anything when it's ILLEGAL.\nIt would be rather silly to be doing things ILLEGALLY and then having to pay for things, DUHH.\nTry to explain that to someone!

For the Canadians apologizing for migrants crossing to New York, did they apologize to you for the hundreds of thousands that crossed from the US into Canada? For those saying shame on the Governor for letting them come in to New York, did they also say shame on the mayor of New York City for loading up busses with migrants and dropping them off close to the Canadian border? I would assume the increased legal consequences would skew the new illegal border crossings from migrants looking for work so they can raise their kids in a country with more economic oppurtunities to a higher percentage of criminals mixed in. I've had some completely institutionalized friends in Baltimore and can say that the bouncing in and out of prison/ have most exciting/chaotic situations/ brag to your friends while you pass the time locked up/ all around adrenaline rush is going to make that crowd see the conseqences as a nuicense and an exclusive challenge. Sort of the same reason that before consumer space travel, some people that grew up absurdly wealthy would do really foolish things to brag about, like climb MT Everest.

Would it not also be up to USA to stop people from crossing the boarder. I think the US should do a better job of protecting their borders.

the penalty for illegal border crossing needs to be increased exponentially.

This was always going to occur. Shut down the southern border and people will try to get in through the north. As I understand it, we don't have the same deportation laws with Canada as we do with Mexico. This needs to be dealt with and Canada needs to step up. I live in a norther border state and my younger brother died of fentanyl. I am fed up with it. I love Canada and remembering crossing the border without even a passport as a kid, but this is no longer acceptable.

In the early 1990s I worked with a Canadian and he said it is easy to cross the border into the U.S. but getting back into Canada was a hassle even if you were a Canadian citizen, you had to show the proper documents, be searched if you looked even slightly suspicious (aka not white). Makes a lot of sense they were keeping undesirables out of Canada but weren't concerned about who was getting into the U.S.

I read in the local news about two weeks ago that five individuals were caught trying to cross Maine's northwestern border. Four of them were Indian and one was an Algerian. It's never a good idea to try to cross the border, but an even worse idea to do it during the winter. It's frigid cold up there and they risk frostbite or even freezing to death.

In the Eastern Townships (QC) there is no fence. You can cross over the border unimpeded. Look at Google Earth. There is NOTHING on either side of the Vermont-QC border except farmers' fields and forests.
