What Trump wants is to eliminate the income tax on billionaires and compensate for that loss of tax revenue through the taxes paid by the middle class: tariffs. Even before now less than 1% of fentanyl came across the Canadian border. Canada has had a trade imbalance with us in our favor. Canada last year had already agreed to beef up border security by $1.3 billion. Canadian troops have fought alongside US troops in several wars. As recently as a few weeks ago Canadian firefighters were helping put out fires in the US. Dumbest tariffs doesn't begin to describe it.

We should also match Canada by imposing our own 25% tariffs on the same goods and services, acting as a force multiplier. I support Trump and much of what he is doing, but I do agree Canada has done well enough to the point these tariffs should not have gone through. I was fully expecting this not to go through or at the very least be much smaller.

We Canadians are suckers if we're giving billions more to Ukraine. Trudeau needs to go now. As for the tariff, I think we need to strike back hard, and continue the boycott of US goods. If we could, would be great do cut off all energy going to the States, but thanks to Trudeau, we don't have cross country pipelines to do that. BTW, Canada is not responsible for what comes into your country, we're responsible to keep things out we don't want in. That's the way these things are supposed to work, we're not East Berlin.

The reality is: the US has reached a record high trade deficit with Canada. This deficit has grown steadily since 1976 (today it is just shy of $100 billion - meaning the US purchases $100 billion more worth of goods from Canada than Canada does from the US). The US imposing tariffs on Canada is a tactic to incentivize US companies who import goods from Canada to move manufacturing/production sourcing back to American soil. This promotes investment and expansion into the US economy. It will also incentivize Canada to commit to investing in the US economy. This would be a negotiation move by Trudeau: we (Canada) will commit to purchasing $25 billion (for example) dollars more of goods from the US if you agree to reduce the tariffs you've imposed on us to blank (maybe 5%). This is likely the end goal Trump is aiming for in the long run.

Inflation is what happens when governments print money. Tariffs may cause prices to rise temporarily due to supply and demand, but that is not the same as de-valuing the currency.

True Americans stand with all people who are fair, honest and DEMOCRATIC in their thinking...that includes the people of Canada and Mexico. I'm not altogether certain about the Chinese but we'll see if or how this impacts them and the reaction from there. That BUM knows precisely who those tariffs will benefit and it's not the people who work so hard in order to live their lives. I'm not crazy about Free Trade either but it is what it is.... Is there no one at CNN who can translate French? Really? I'm American, and I'm hoping Trudeau announces that he's making trade deals with Europe (and even China) that cut us out. Betraying our allies should never be incentvised. I'm even hoping they cut off our oil, which WILL jack gas prices, since our refineries in the Midwest are only deisgned to process Canadian crude. And the truth is that the reason for the tariffs is that Trump has direct control over them, and can probably have Elon do something with the revenue that couldn't be done with normal taxes. This is neither here nor there to Americans but the Canadians will not forget this in a hurry. They are going to boycott American goods of their own free will. The result is the US will have lost market share in Canada well after this tariff spat is over.

Tariffs 25% higher are in place in The United States of America north and southern borders and the canadian prime minister's words are some of the consecuences.
