Housing crisis is due to the greed of builders and few who can buy

The flood of new people has totally overwhelmed our services: housing, health care, affordabiity.

As someone living in Quebec I can confirm.. housing prices just seem unreasonable for someone with a modest income. pretty much had to keep living with family and pay them a rent that is liveble with.. Heard other people who can't count of family had to share single person appartments with friends and sometimes even random people in similar situation. Its honestly terrifying to think about potentially having no home despite getting a modest income..\nThe medical scene is probably a bit better but still not that great looking. Quebec had (dunno how it works in other provinces) a system of Family doctors that the medical system sort of relied on. yet there is barely no family doctors left. I can't buy the meds I need without a doctor giving me the prescription but I no longer have a family doctor for the last 5 years. I've been jumping through hoops and all just to get somehow to extend or give me another year of prescription.. I need those meds for life though....\nFood situation.. I guess sure the prices have increase but for the most part we(me and family) are still hanging on fine. However restaurents have gotten too pricy so we had to cut luxury out of our life.

The students need to go. They have put an unnecessary strain on our social, housing and employment structures. The colleges should be held accountable for running immigration scams.

The government should let low income earners deduct mortgage interest on their tax return, it will definitely help with housing affordability.

Yup, thats the type of people you guys want in the country. Mexicans were ok going over their to work build a house and return home. But ok....

This is not a Toronto problem, an Ontario problem or a Canadian problem, it's the entire western world and it comes down to one simple reality: the concentration of immense wealth in the hands of but a very few. Until wealth is distributed fairly and that normal working people can afford to house themselves, buy groceries and still have some disposable income, the problems portrayed here will only intensify.

700,000 of the 1.1 million that came to Canada are students. The international student system needs to be overhauled. The university/colleges who want international students must register with the feds. Those with permits MUST BE MADE to build, own, and provide international students with housing. When an international student is offered a placement in a Canadian education institution, they are also offered housing built by that institution. Once acceptance is made, then the details are sent to the feds and the visa is finally issued. This way, everyone who comes, has housing, it takes pressure off the domestic housing market, the students themselves know where they are going to be and how much things will cost, including the housing, and the Canadian institutions who want the stdents, have to now pay for them. This will force the education institutions to build more housing, lower the number of students they bring in, and offer much more remote learning opportunities if the program really does not require the students to come at all. Pass the bill onto the institutions, and the problem will quickly resolve. The federal government is being LAZY. If it wants people, it has to focus on a system that makes sense for people to come to Canada, insure the institutions dont take advantage of these students AND NOT shift the housing problem to the domestic market. The federal and provincial governments also need to organize themselves with each other. The provinces should tell the federal government how many they can take in based on housing stock and unemployment rate, and the feds only grant visas based on those numbers, and the visas require those coming to be in the province that has space for them. This way, you help to take pressure off the larger cities and spread growth to areas of the country that wants the growth. The approach needs to be bottom up, so needs and capacity drive the numbers allowed in.

Canada is going downhill for the past 20 years. The list of problems faced by Canada are many, this includes unaffordable housing, a dysfunctional health care system with never ending wait times, over taxation with little or benefits in return, an exploding homeless population, and an economy dominated by monopolies which leads exorbitant high prices. Trudeau believes the solution to all of Canada ills is to increase immigration to a recklessly high number and double the size of the federal government, this recklessly high number of immigration is exacerbating Canada’s problems and not improving it. Thanks to Trudeau Canada is headed for third world status.

its too expensive . gas is 2$ a liter grocerys is way to high. apartments are useally 2k a month or more for a 1 bedroom. and houseing is over a mill for a ho dunk trailer park house.

I and my wife had a quarel about this particular issue. I am currently in Nigeria and doing well cos I am a Software Engineer and I do remote jobs that pays very well. I have my own house, cars and my daughter goes to one of the best school in town. \n\nBut for some reason she wants us to relocate. She's been hammering on this particular topic for a long time now, and tbh I am very okay with where I am, I live like a king here why should I travel to another land and start licking someone's ass? \n\nI told her if she's persistent on this issue I will send her and my daughter to go then I can go visit time to time. But I am not about to leave my country just cos other people are doing so. My reality is different.

Canada has sadly taken a hit. I say with no hate..... but we let too many people into our nation. The housing issue is one thing, but housing can be built. My sadness comes from the change in our Canadian culture. Canadians were always known to be nice people, polite and generous people but the more foreigners we let in, I see less friendly Canadians, less polite Canadians.... our culture is changing for the worse because of letting other cultures blend in.

For a government that only has the ability to: ban plastic bags, straws, allow marijuana, drug injection, advocate transgender, introduce large-scale refugees, take care of illegal immigrants... such a government really can't expect them to improve the economy, housing, medical care...

I'm coming for my Master's in Ontario, I'm scared that Canada is full now and it doesn't need immigrants due to housing, unemployment issues etc.\n\nNot sure what to do, should I hold back until situation gets better

Why are they showing junkies?? They have nothing to do with the immigrants that come here to work or the housing crisis. Even if houses were cheaper, they'd still be doing their drugs and look for trouble outside.

I don't think Canada has ever been this bad in all it's history but i am hopefull we can pull together again especially for our kids ,the most important thing that Canadians is housing.

I'm a widow bless with four kids going through a lot of threatening from my in-laws\nWho doesn't allowed me me peace. They don't help in anyway except always make me cry all all the to point not allowing any man to enter house if do accept one that I will leave the house and the will take kids away from me.

If it can afford them, who are we to say otherwise?? ?. Number 1 issue will always be housing before anything else because I mean pregnant women and kids will need a roof over their heads first before facing other issues but without a roof over their heads how do they want to function???

No it can't. This country needs immigrants but the targets that have been set are way too high. There is not enough affordable housing available and it is driving up rent's so that they are unaffordable for the average Canadian. Many of the new immigrants are older family members and will never contribute to the system and only burden our overtaxed services.

Inviting millions upon millions of immigrants while housing prices go through the roof seems bonkers, but remember who the government prioritizes: asset holders. In other words, wealthy people. People who own multiple properties want to see the value of their properties continue to be pumped up. They don't want the government making housing more plentiful and affordable. And these are people who have far more influence than the average person.

As a Canadian this video is only touching the tip of the iceberg. #1 Canada was built by immigrants (like my late grandparents) for immigrants, Immigrants regardless if they are here on a work or study permit are not the problem but the solution, always have been and always will be. Yes the part of the problem can be attributed to an inadequate affordable housing and yes the federal government does deserve blame for that. However as the 2nd largest nation in the world by land mass yet with a population less than California, we have a lot of underdeveloped areas from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and that is also the fault of the federal government regardless of political stripe. Regardless if people come to Canada to work or study, the federal government needs to make it more attractive to them to reside outside the BIG 3 cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver which have become overwhelmed with immigrants hence the strain on housing and healthcare

It's made a mess of the immigration system esp with regard to temporary foreign workers and international students along with decades of poor planning in key areas like housing, health, education etc. Needs lot of changes soon imo

Not enough jobs. Way too many low paying jobs. Companies don’t want to pay people. You cannot afford a house that costs 1 million dollars with a 20 dollar wage

The problem is not with immigrants, it is with the government's poor planning. The housing crisis began well before the recent uptick in immigration, and both major political parties are responsible for it. They under-invested in social housing and did not give enough tax incentives for developers to build new housing. They did this on purpose because the housing market was seen as the place where homeowners could build massive equity, and they did. For many years, Canadians were very pleased with this state of affairs. About a decade ago stories were running everywhere that the Canadian middle class was larger and wealthier than the American middle class. This was almost entirely due to the equity established in housing. But the prices just kept going up and up, there was not enough new housing built (on purpose, to maintain the value of Canadian real estate), and the economy needed new immigrants to fill thousands of jobs and to keep funding the health care system and other social benefits. So now we have a housing crunch, where even Canadians who own homes cannot sell them because they have nowhere to move to (everything around them is just as expensive), immigrants can't find housing, and the health care system is overloaded. It's a proper mess, but it's not as simple as saying the problem is with too many immigrants.

Ugh this is so sad. I was in my mid 20s when I left Canada for the US because the housing situation there was out of control. The park they showed at the 2:44 mark was where I used to live back in 2021 and I remember it was filled with kids playing and people walking their dogs. Now it's a tent encampment for the homeless. Very sad to see the living condition deteriorate there and hoping they can turn it around.

Why everyone is blaming the government when its clearly the college owners making false promisses and trying to shove in as many students for 5 times the regular fees in their makeshift universities as fast as possible without building them housing and puting naive people in everlasting debt because they graduated way more people than the job market could acomodate for that course?\n\nHonestly us high time Canadians start taking large corporations acountable for how they affect the economy, I say if you need more housing make them pay for it or they are not getting any more students, also limit the amount of college positions to the amount of actual job openings and a lot less people are going into college debt traps.

The Feds under Trudea announced that they were significantly increasing immigration. But did not plan on increasing the housing within Canada ?? even though there was a shortage in the housing market.

Canada is now a third world nightmare. Houses getting burned down, cars getting stolen and shipped overseas, insane amount of fentanyl getting shipped in. The other day an entire family was massacred with a knife in Ottawa, he even killed the two babies.

Canada is turning into a dystopia very fast. The healthcare has been collapsed completely. Housing has become an impossibility for most Canadians. Freedom of Speech has gone - as we saw in the crackdown after the trucker protest - under this narcissistic prime minister.

I'm not sure about the details, but despite Germany having a massive housing crisis, it's illegal for the owner to leave the apartment unoccupied. That or they have to pay a penalty / much higher tax.

By the looks of all the tents in Canada I would say we cannot afford more immigration. We should be dealing with the current housing crisis while pausing immigration until the housing sector catches up. I fail to understand how adding to the housing crisis will help anybody?

Why not have a government program that pays new immigrants to build housing? Denmark has a program of simple, affordable housing for single parents where there is a shared large kitchen and everyone participates in making dinner 2 X a month and doing clean up 2 X a month, but you get dinner as a group every night. It's great for working parents, plus there are built in friends for the kids. We need more cohousing options.

Canada actually has a place with affordable housing. It's called Montreal, which has significantly more medium density residential. Turns out if you follow US style residential development, you go broke. Do more Montreal and less Winnipeg.

Politicians did not think about the support system for newcomers: housing, healthcare, education, and transportation. Doctors going to USA bc is privatized, so yes for the money. But ask who there can afford ? You don’t have to wait 4 months to see doctor bc we have many walk in clinics. I think everyone is missing the point here. I Don’t support Israel’s retaliation, but I wondered why the Arab world has not taken in a single refugee. Poland didn’t condone Russia’s attack by taking in hundreds of thousands Ukrainian refugees. If Egypt, jordan, Quatar, to name the immediate Arab Neighbors would rally together to get the women and children out of harms way, surely the outcome would be better for these poor people. \n\nSadly this is not the case and it appears as though this conflict will never find a solution, as long as both parties are not able to set aside their millennia aged quarrel, acknowledge each other’s deep roots and belonging to the same land, and accept that they both come from the exact same bloodline. The exact same seed of a man named Abraham. Both parties need not to like or even tolerate each other, but they both need to respect each other’s right to co exist within that space. I’ve heard some disgusting vitriol from both sides, honestly. Both sides have and are behaving like animals. Infact animals are more civil, as their disputes are settled in a more humane manner, without the casualties within their communities. Yet, despite being created in God’s image with the ability of sophisticated communication, both sides are unable to get past their own hurt pride, at least for the sake of the innocent lives that have and continue to be lost on BOTH sides, to finally squash this matter once and for all.\n\nGrowing up I had a cousin . We both were the only Sons of our respective immediate families’, born to identical twin sisters, 3 months apart. From\nA young age everything was competition between us. Who ran faster, jumped higher, threw further. Every thing we did, and we spent a lot of time around each other, was constantly turned into a “who does it better”. This resulted in us usually throwing down as one of us, feeling like we may be on the losing end of any given task, would just get frustrated, and start soccer punching the other. And my cousin and I from the time were off the diary to the day we both matured, would THROW down. We would literally just start throwing punches at each other, it was honestly impressive how we both would manage to land equal amount of hits to look like literal bloody hell, and guess what, even those fights became competition as even our dads would throw money with the others pitching for their favourite. Fortunately, our moms, the only adults in the our community, looking back, people would just pick a side and watch as go at each other, than pull us off each other, would come stomping out of the house grab each one of us by our ears, gives us a good smack in the back our heads and sit us down, look each one of us straight in the eye, and say something like, “cut it out, you two are family, more brothers than cousins” they would demand that we both go hug it out, have a bath, if we managed to do that peacefully then we were allowed to partake in dessert that evening or allowed to stay up a little later watching tv, or whatever . My point with this overtly personal analogy is that both the Palestinian and the Israeli sides should be dragged off each there by their figurative ears pulled, sat down, scolded and reminded of their ancestrial ties to each other and to the very same land. \n\nBe honest with yourselves, some how amongst all this hate, vitriol, unnecessary death of innocent lives, are you, and those you rally with be truly ok with your opposing side coexisting harmoniously beside each other? If the answer to this question is no, the other side can not have any claim to this land and needs to be removed to god knows where, if not off the earth all together then it’s your people, not mine, that are doomed. We’ll still be chilling in North America, horrified at the unfolding events but chilling nonetheless. Although it somehow claims to not be doing so, the actions of Israel demonstrate a gruelling callousness towards Palestinian life or right to life, and the staunch calls of the constant pro Palestine protests, calling for the eradication of Israel, none absent of a deep, hate and disgust towards the Jewish people. Both are in need of serious internal reform. Honestly as a complete outsider, SHAME ON BOTH OF YOU. I don’t care who started it, or who said or did what, at this point it is imperil that this end immediately. And as an outsider, I think it’s is important that pressure be applied to both sides to put their weapons down. I don’t recall the last time anyone even mention the Israeli hostages, putting any pressure on Hamas to do the one thing that would definitely appease the Israelis. In the same breathe, Israel needs to be further pressured to stop being so trigger happy and lay off of it. \n\nI can only hope, I guess. In the meantime i should really refrain from ranting on YouTube.

Oh i wasn’t expecting quebec to be thee no1 on this list but it’s nice to see it there im from greater Montreal\nIm not the bragging type but it feels nice to see it there especially that most people don’t fully appreciate the luck we have\nIt’s also funny to see that most people from outside say Montreal is amazing and people from around the city love to hate it for some reasons\nI must say that recent years have been hard cos of the consequences of the pandemic among other things which made the access to healthcare much harder than just a few years ago and also the prices of houses and rents have exploded since 2020 and the crime rate have raised in Montreal but not as much as cities cited in the video from the prairies \nI think its still a great place and safe place to live and we are lucky to be in that province and that country even though quebecois love to complain or as we say « chialer »

I may receive a lot of criticism for my opinion, but I feel compelled to share my experience as a resident and worker in this country. I immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 2022 and have since been living and working in Winnipeg. This country has offered me numerous opportunities, even though I do not hold high-ranking positions. My wife and I are able to save a bit of money for unforeseen expenses. Just when I started to feel settled and thought that things were going quite well, I encountered numerous videos claiming the opposite, particularly highlighting the scarcity of affordable housing. \n \nDespite the prevalence of such content, my personal experience differs. I pay $725 for housing with a salary of $2.3K, which I find to be a reasonable balance. Some might say I was fortunate, but affordable housing ranging from $800 to $1000 is readily available in Winnipeg, and this is just one city's example; there are many other cities across Canada. \nFrom my perspective, the issue of housing affordability is overstated and not solely attributable to the country's policies. Such scenarios can occur in any nation if half the population desires to reside within 4% of its land area (namely, Toronto and its vicinity), leading inevitably to soaring prices – that's simply economics. \n \nIt's not my place to dictate how Canadians should live, but it appears to me that the crux of the problem lies in the uneven distribution of the population. As the second-largest country globally, Canada can comfortably accommodate 40 million people or even significantly more. However, this necessitates a collective understanding that concentrating the population in a single city may not be the most prudent approach.

I clicked on this expecting some right-wing Trudeau-bashing, and I was pleased to see it’s actually a fairly objective, non-partisan discussion. \n\nOne thing it doesn’t mention, though, is that conservative provincial governments in Canada are sitting on $70 billion in health care funding supplied by the federal government. They are deliberately allowing their health care systems to deteriorate. They have done the same with federal housing funding, to the point where the federal government is now making deals directly with cities to supply new housing. \n\nAnd, those rising housing prices, for better or worse, have made a lot of Canadian homeowners and landlords very wealthy. THEY certainly don’t want to see housing get more affordable.
