I'm a White woman who dresses well, caries herself well, and is well spoken. I have been accused of trying to steal shoes when just trying them on, and followed in stores at various times in my life. Overall, I'd say I probably do get treated better in certain circumstances, but this doesn't only happen to people of color.

There is Safe Third Country Agreement between the US and Canada. Therefore the law says you are required to claim refugee status in the first country you land in. With that being said he landed in the US first and probably applied for status there. This is a strong deciding factor for the government's decision process amongst other factors. I feel for him but laws are laws.

If he failed the asylum case then that's where it finishes. You either have substantive claims or not. He's probably a lovely guy, but has attempted to obtain asylum status under false pretences. People try it the world over. The US, Canada, Europe, Australia - but the world is waking up. Its a rort that needs to be dealt with expeditiously. They need to get this guy and his family back home safely.

Wait, he's told he needs to show up for deportation and he simply skips it?  Then runs to BC?  He's already been refused refugee status so how is it possible for him to ignore it and just move to another province and cost us again for a trial and probably another appeal?  So if he gets refused by BC does he then move to Saskatchewan?  Then Manitoba?  What a charade this is.

People who can't speak the national language shouldn't be moving to another country especially not illegally. I can't feel sorry for this guy. I mean sure he's probably had a rough time but having kids and then trying to illegally immigrate just doesn't seem like the right way to try to live life especially not to raise a child in. \n\nIf you want to better yourself and your family learn the language and properly apply for a visa and come work here and contribute. Show Canada that your a worthy addition and eventually you can legally immigrate here. Trying to sneak in and avoid being deported isn't the way to go and it will never help your family in the long run.

Im white and always get followed in a chinese grocery. Lately, it has been alot less but now I cant get anyone to help me. I dont think any races trust each other for the majority. I dont have a problem with races..I dont trust any kid..probably cuz I worked in prison for a few years.

I'll lay it out for you: Me: typical middle of the road liberal oriented Canadian. Non white, immigrant (I wasnt born here) I worked in a Refugee housing for over 4 years in Ontario. Most were not war areas refugees (Yes I know there are other types of refugees). I only encountered few refugees from war areas. ONLY 1 person from Iraq, about 2 families were from Afghanistan, 1 couple from Pakistan(I doubt they were real refugees they spoke fluent English, maybe political refugee), and a most from African countries. Its too far for real refugees to get here. Its Easier for them to go to other countries nearby or Europe. MOST SEEM TO BE ECONOMIC REFUGEES. Most were coming from Africa. Some are coming from Latin America, which shouldn't be happening. Once they showed up at our doorstep and we processed them into the system, they were immediately in the same class as a Canadian resident homeless person if they were making a refugee claim. We get money to house and feed them (from the government), and they are given a stipend for basics from the government processed through the Social Assistance/ Welfare system (they get less than a resident/citizen I think.). They then have to get their case processed by the refugee board, and most seem to get in. I've only heard of few getting sent back. One person I know at our facility, was given a subsided social housing apartment after a year in our facility. So they went straight from a shelter to a government/city owned subsidized apartment. (Didn't seem like it was a issue for the housing worker...they didn't report it (if they were not the ones that helped the person to get it), they were white, the housed person was Latin. This refugee claimant, and then month or two new Canadian resident person was given an apartment in a prime area of the city, instead of the 1000's of Canadians, those who came before them, and born Canadian citizens on an extremely long waiting list. How this was allowed to happen I don't know. The person was probably sucking on someone's straw. I'm just trying to think the barriers these people have to go through to get a job here. We are far removed from the time of the 80's and 90's., and housing and jobs are so hard to get. Lol the "Canadian government asks them to repay the traveling cost to Canada if they are sent back"....I wonder how much the government recoups?.....more like 0 probably. What a bunch of crap. How do you demand someone to repay their flight cost when they get back to their country?

I think you probably messed-up your case Jose. You have to give probable causes of danger back in your home country. Its not luck. Its a process. And you can still get humanitarian. For the first group of 25000 Syrian refugees, many had very large families. As mentioned in the video, $50,000 depending on the number in the family, probably 8 or more, mostly children under the age of 17? Now add on the child care benefit. For each child under the age of 6 the family gets $6400 & those over the age of 6 to 17 they get $5400. So if you had 8 kids, 4 under the age of 6 equal to $25,600 & 4 over equal $21,600 & it's all tax free. Now add on subsidized housing, free health care, the one time setup housing money & the Government covered their transportation cost to Canada. Total $97,200, most of it tax free. Canadian Immigration Consultant considers this kind of family just above the poverty line. Remember this is just a scenario, but it does show the added benefit of our wonderful child care benefit for families.

In Regina the majority of the homeless are native, not all but many natives live in run down places they don't take care of. yup. It would be really difficult to immigrate to Alberta now. Our unemployment rates at ridiculously high, our provincial deficit is out of control, and our main resource is showing few signs of actual recovery. It's probably the worst province to attempt to move to. This is a sad story, and it breaks my heart, but I definitely understand why cases like this are so common.

I can't believe what's being said in these comments. So the fact that he didn't speak English in the interview is the only thing that sunk in? Ok. Many of the immigrants that come here , come for the opportunities: Work, food, shelter, etc. Learning English should be mandatory in all immigrants applying for citizenship but we can't disregard someone because they choose NOT to speak English. For all we know, this guy (I'm sure) understands and probably can speak some English but for the sake of the interview the producers mostly likely asked him and he chose to speak in Spanish.

When I saw the title I was going to comment saying that he should come back to Mexico and work in Cancun hotels or other touristic places. Call me whatever, but India has been dealing with this for a very long time, probably since 1980s. I dont hate islam but I dont love it either. Let's just say that I wouldnt buy a house in Muslim neighborhood. It has been a nuisance to India since a long time, every time we screamed in UN for help. We got shut down until the problem reached world wide. People say it started happening since Iraq and syrian war which is slightly incorrect. This problem has been there since ages prior to war, It just manifested on a high level recently. There are so many examples...This religion feeling which later turns into violence starts with your own house, your upbringing and your own values. If a kid is used to seeing his mom being suppressed then when he grows up, dont expect much from him. Now every community has this issue but in Muslim community it is engraved in you the moment you open your eyes on planet earth. You cannot defend the argument when someone says Women are suppressed in mulsim culture. The most hurtful thing happening is in UK. A country which gave you food, shelter, respect, a better life. You are trying to impose your values on it? As a matter of fact, good muslims should come out openly and boycott these terrorist who are trying to create chaos if they really want to show good intentions but you wont see any (for obvious reasons). They often cry about they being a victim but what about other people?? If all good muslim come out and boycott bad muslims then that would be a thing to appreciate and notice. Since going blonde, wearing eye contacts, and even lightening my eyebrows, people catch me off guard more often by approaching or chatting with me for a while in public/stores. I'm used to looking kind of quiet (had dark hair/eyebrows/eyes, wore dark clothes and makeup usually) and maybe now I might appear more approachable, because the blonde probably downplays my dark clothes and eye makeup, and my other heritage seems invisible (leaning more on looking 100% european, instead of 50% ecuadorian/latin).

That Air Force base you mentioned (Davis- Monthan ) is attached to what is known as the bone yard. Those planes you see are in storage and will probably never to be flown again. We can parts off of those old planes that can be used again.

it's not the religion.... it's the mac's convenience and the corner stores selling tropicana juice for 6 bucks a liter. It's the family oriented hiring policies and the rural area stores being bought and not offering fishing bait, ice or firewood but instead offering dollar store fishing lures for 20 bucks. it's the electronic stores that sell tape decks and old CD players. The stuff that really makes a bad impression is when a muslim family buys a Pizza Pizza or a subway and then changes the restaurant so that there is no where to be seated and the food is processed by someone who won't look me in the eye once and speaks a language that I can't understand to an employer about my sandwich and i will never know what the problem was. I feel like my spanish and native friends treat me the same as them. I feel like the scottish guy who hates me for not waking up at 5 in the morning is only mad because i'm not working as hard as him. I'm saying that maybe a lot of muslims don't want to be our friends and maybe some do... but it seems like they don't want to be my friend but will message a pretty white girl on every single facebook post with paragraphs of physical praise. i probably get a lot of facts wrong... but that world may be too far away for us to acclimate into each others societies.
