This is heart breaking. Even though people are pointing out and focusing on religion, they need to understand the history of these symbols too. How cruel were those times and what kirpan symbolises.

We are in different world right now old religion doesn't fit in thos world. If you want to practice your religion, that's fine but do it within your community and leave others who don't believe in this.

Well... This one isn't as black and white. Religion needs to be left on the doorsteps of an institution, especially one that's meant for a vast and varied audience.

You cannot display and carry the weapon around like that. I understand it’s got a religious significance, but this keeps other people on the edge. Practice your religion freely until it doesn’t affect/interfere others.

I think there are issues on both sides. The cop's mistake is obvious. That kid probably could have still be complying with his religion by either wearing it inside or use a knife with 2-4 inch blade (which a lot of other Sikhs do).

This is wrong ,even thousands will support him for his culture ,but this isn't right .university and education institutions shouldn't be bound with any religion and faith.and even any sharp objects are obviously should not be allowed .

Sikhs can carry knives in india, its legal for them here, but not every country allows u to do that.. we must respect rules of every country. Religions come 2nd, 1st will always be the law of land.

I am an Indian.. but certain things need to be followed on university campuses.. religion is supposed to be practiced in their private spaces and esp not at educational places..

There is 2 types of Sikh..... one that are baptized and live that life and then that knife would actually be part of his religion and there is a few extra things..... and then there is Sikh that are not living that life and are more peaceful and would not have a knife like that unless they ( wanted to for fun) ....... if he lives his life as the type that always has that as a Sikh this was a violation of his wright to religion and is a serious lawsuit and also wrongful detaining .....

I think police was right, he would have killed something, that's the terrorist attack type of something, prevention is better than cure, u can now a day do anything in name of custom of religion, like it is the custom.

If my Sikh brother had requested that policeman to not put handcuffs on him because he is a student and he will walk with him politely or the policeman had done his work more sincerely by understanding & listening to that kid what he was trying to say about his religion, this whole scenes will be different and could be resolved then 'n there.\nBut what's done is done can't undo it.

Maybe he has religious intentions but we need to understand its not India, its USA and they have their own laws + there are many many incidents where school shooting happens or people get killed by things so people are scared of anything that they think can harm them. I am not saying calling police on someone is right just bcz they are following religion but we need to know where to follow your religion.
