I guess because Toronto is so huge and because I stayed in the main touristy areas I only noticed a few homeless people during my trip. They were more noticeable to me in Calgary in the spring. But the worst I've seen is Portland, Oregon and Seattle, WA and in 2021 Washington DC was pretty bad off...though the encampments I saw then had been cleared out by DC when I returned in 2023.\n\nI really really enjoyed my stay in Toronto over Labor Day weekend, my first time ever to visit. But just looking around me I got the same sense I did in NYC...it's a beautiful place to visit but living here would be ungodly expensive. The luxury apartments across the street from my hotel seemed to have rather low occupancy, from what I could see from my hotel room window at night. A lot of rental real-estate are speculative investments and any thought of addressing housing needs, keeping occupancy rates high, etc. are purely secondary concerns...zombie buildings with unaffordable rents that remain sparsely occupied while the need(s) are so dire is morally offensive and government should step in with rent controls and occupancy requirements and tax those owners more heavily who have occupancy below a minimum threshold. The increase in crime is a completely expected outcome of economic desperation. The US answer is usually more police & harsher penalties but I hope Canada is more rational and humane in addressing these societal ills.

Immigrating to Canada is a scam designed to relieve immigrants of their life savings That's why it's so easy to get in here compared to just about anywhere else. These days, it's like the only growth industry in Canada is to make money off hopeful immigrants. After all, why would a backward county with little manufacturing and one of the lowest rates of business investment of the OECD need to increase its labor force by 2-3% a year?

Comments from a Canadian. Homeless people are generally concentrated in the larger cities but in the past few years it has become a real problem. It is a real problem for the people when the temperature drops to -30C. Mental wellness is a huge issue. The racism issue is mainly against the indigenous. The doctor migration to the US is a money thing, not better conditions. Getting a family doctor is easy in some places and difficult in others, generally in rural communities. Getting a reference to a specialist is not an issue and I believe this may be a doctor specific issue. If your GP does not refer you, ER will take care of you. The issue with referrals is the triage system that may result in a longer wait to see the specialist. This is in contrast to the US where one can see a specialist very quickly, if one has insurance. In Canada, every citizen and legal resident has the ability to receive medical care as covered by the provincial medical systems which differs from province to province. Many doctors are now offering online communication with your GP and specialist. Your finance comments are inaccurate. There are 5 nation wide banks but there are also nation wide credit unions and provincial banks which in my opinion these tend to offer better service than the big 5 (exclude National Bank, which is big bank but more investment focused). Cell carrier monopolies is a real issue. Cell carriers are recently offering unlimited data, no long distance to the US, etc. Other countries have a definite advantage here. The government has enabled conditions for a new carrier a few times but eventually, these smaller carriers get swallowed up by the big national carriers. More recently Rogers bought out Shaw which limits our choices further. Sales tax is not always 10-15%. In Alberta the sales tax is 5%. Passing courses and evaluations ensures there are standards which is a good thing. Would you want a Civil Engineer designing a road or bridge that is not suitable for the climate? How about a doctor with questionable credentials? Agree with your recommendations for hiring. It is expensive to hire and train a new employee but can be much more expensive to fire an employee. Agree with the housing crisis comments and the reasons. Getting an absent owner to fix a property? This is crazy inaccurate. Multi-dwelling properties have property managers paid to look after the properties regardless of who owns it. While on the average, foreign investment may not seem to contribute to property prices, this is not the case when looking a the local sectors of the big two - Toronto and Vancouver. There was a case in Vancouver where a property with a shack sold for over $1MM. This is not because the house price was unrealistic, but because of the property location and perceived property value. This is a direct result of foreign investment in houses in the Vancouver area resulting in a lack of properties. Many of these foreign owned single family investment properties remain empty most of the year. Another big issue in many Canadian municipalities is the lack of building code enforcement. The laws are in place but not always enforced.

So many wrong ideas expressed in this video. Government investment is more of hindrance than a benefit to business. Part of the reason for the weak Canadian economy is too much government interference with business. We could produce more oil and cheaper but the government puts too many restrictions and prevents the development of pipelines. I feel very safe in downtown Toronto because I am accustomed to it. I've never experienced any issue with the homeless and continue to talk to them, offer them food IFFFF they just happen to be pan-handling and often hug them to make them very SEEN. I NEVER MIND PAYING TAXES - WHAT I MIND... IS HOW OUR TAX DOLLARS ARE BEING SPENT... it all depends on the party in power. I would pay 40% income tax happily IFFFF our tax dollars were devoted to services mirroring the way Scandinavian countries do - they invest it WELL in their municipal services rather rather than blow it. \nOur federal and provincial bureaucrats are sucking. Our biggest problem is the amount of foreign investment and the sheer amount of immigration year over year. \n\nThere is some housing available (owned by landlords who own entire complexes) however either the prices are jacked way up or they are converted to a BNB unit which turns canadian home buyers away. \n\nWe do not have the infrastructure to support 500,000 new immigrants with government and native regulations stiffling the means to expand to support the influx of newcomers. Even then, most of the immigrants are tradesmen coming to a tech rich country.\n\nAlso our government is more corrupt than one would think with most of the larger corporations being government owned or partnered leading to a monopoly in many industries.

You ignored a major reason of the severe housing crisis. Chinese citizens buy up huge amounts of, specifically condos. And then they lay empty, because the condo is an investment, and if someone lives in it, they could damage it, lowering the value. These condos are then sold to other chinese citizens, each time they are sold the price goes up. When someone finally re-enters the market the asking price is far above the actual worth because the condo has been traded around to make sure everyone makes a profit. In BC, to try to fight there there is both an empty home tax and a foreign buyer tax. Meanwhile new high end condos continue to get built which are simply bought up by Chinese owners. I know a building manager in Vancouver, who showed me just how empty her building actually is.\n\nAnd for anyone who thinks I'm being racist by targeting Chinese citizens. Ask yourself why would real estate agencies have billboards entirely in Mandarin. Why do real estate websites have devoted sections entirely in Mandarin, but not one for French, an actual official language.

Aside from what was said (making more money), other reasons why many immigrants would fight tooth and nail to get U.S. citizenship are the fact that the U.S. has a bigger and wealthier population, which translates to American companies getting more investment money. And in turn, are alot more willing to invest more of that money into their employers. Other underlying reasons include an overall warmer climate, rich pay less taxes, and the fact that an immigrant finally obtaining U.S. citizenship is considered a status symbol. \n\nAnd there are other reasons why Canada government is far more immigrant friendly. The government wants to increase their country's population to at least 100 million, and that isn't possible with Canada being one of the numerous countries experiencing a decline in baby's being born. And the new immigrants are to hopefully prevent the time in the future when Canada has too many old people, but not enough caretakers and young people to tax.

Guys a simple request to everyone hearing this podcast. Incorporate only positive takeways from this podcast like creating more wealth. It solely depends upon you where you want to invest money, whether it be mutual funds, stocks, real estates, safe govt schems. I know you all might be thinking investing on real estate would give only little returns, thats right butit depend on the location and type of property you invested in. In terms of family safety and investment I would never move to the U.S.A. When I do travel across the border I make sure I have two sources of medical coverage in case I get ill or have an accident, as I know I might as well jump off a bridge if I end up in the hospital with an illness requiring surgery. Though I do appreciate the grit of Americans and the absolute hell the working class has been through this last decade, I do wish you all the very best and my heart is with you.

People who earn income, including investment income while visiting the U.S. are required to pay taxes in the U.S. Seriously. If I was living off a Canadian investment portfolio or collecting a Canadian pension while living in the U.S. _even temporarily,_ I would have to file a return and pay taxes to the I.R.S. Trust me, that's *never* going to happen. Don't get me started on healthcare, gun violence, bigotry, political insecurity, et. al.

A few quick points. \n\nDuring the 2009 recession, canada was positioned pretty strong, however if we didnt lower our interest rates our currency would have rissen to high in value and as a result made it too expensive for u.s companies to invest in it. \n\nThe downside was that it over inflated assets due to our strength and confidence in the housing market during the u.s. termoil.\n\nNow, our cost of living is incredibly high, and our tight lending policies on businesses make it difficult to scale within our own country, thus limiting good paying jobs. \n\nThe reason canadians dont invest as much in businesses is not because of lack of innovation and work, it is just much harder to acquire capital.

Certain parts except Quebec should secede to the US just imagine how much the US would invest in those oil and gas fields and let’s be honest Quebec has been trying to secede for a long time and provinces like Alberta are literally more integrated with American-states than they are with their Canadian counterparts.

Oh, Canada has 7 large banks that do all the consumer lending. No wonder the banking sector is stable. Now, are loans available for investing in business? Nope. Canadian banks would rather buy money market funds in the USA and the USA take the Canadian savings and loan to an American who invests in Canada and takes the profits back to the USA and pays off the loan who pays off Canadian banks.

There are too many selfish idiots in this country who want to get rich quick through property investing. As a result of this everyone is mortgaged up to their eyeballs in debt. People think that owning investment properties means you're some sort of god. If we didn't have any resources our entire economy would be focussed on building homes. The thing is, the houses that builders build in this country are terrible. They don't insulate well, the materials used are crap, the workmanship is poor. People on average now take out mortgages 6-7x their income. To keep property booming we open the floodgates for immigrants. The societal landscape of our country is changing for the worse. Looking around Melbourne and Sydney, most people are either Chinese or Indian now. These people run away from their countries (which they think are crap compared to the West) and then they buy houses here resulting in people born in Australia losing out.\n\nThe entire thing is a god damn ponzi scheme.

Canadas biggest problem is over relliance on US. If they allow themselves to trade with Asia it would be beneficial. Not only that if they stop being US bitch and let Chinese businesses in it might help them. They are playing a game where they will always loose. Canada need policies that incentivize investment from outside. Making Vancouver a tax haven (not for residential property but investments in business) if you invest in business you wont get taxed or taxes are competitively lower, something like ireland and give incentives for startups. 0% tax on startups and keeping low and competitive tax for local industry even later on would help. Vancouver has potential to become something like Singapore or Hong Kong. As of right now Canada has all the policies that discourage investment.

I already knew that Canada had a lot of in common with Australia but this an another thing we have in common. We're not as entrepreneurial and innovative as the US but we have a resources economy and people tend to invest in property (because it's a safe investment).\n\nI would still much rather live in Australia or Canada than the US though. POPULATION. \n\nCompared to countries like denmark, sweden, japan, france, uk, etc. we have a much bigger country to maintain landmass wise. Infrastructure. I could go on and on how the 70s-90s were one of the best time periods in modern history for various reasons but I wont. There are problems internationally, we live in a globalist world. All I will say though is leave the huge metropolitans like Toronto and Vancouver. Everyone wants to go there because they think 'theres more opportunity' ugh. The idea of Ontario or BC is just a big nope for me (although I go to BC every couple years, love it there I would not want to live there).

I would add that because of the lack of investment in businesses and an open immigration policy while over-prioritizing Canadian only experience there is a huge underemployment problem especially amongst highly skilled and experienced immigrants who would mainly wait to get the Canadian passport and move down south to the US where evaluations of international experience is more objective. Lots of low to medium skilled jobs. Dear Canada, I say this as an immigrant, if you don’t have enough high skilled jobs don’t open your borders or make it clear you want low skilled immigrants. That said, Canada is great country with minimal crime and is fairly equal. Problem is, it’s hard to get out of the rat race here.

I think the one thing wrong in this video is I don’t believe Canadian’s would rather spend more on living then elsewhere. The cost of housing takes up most income and therefore can’t invest it… not much of an option. We have a leader who seems to be deeply invested in shutting down our oil and gas industry. He shut down oil and gas. Which put hundreds of people out of work. Then he slapped us with a carbon tax. He told us the carbon tax dollars would be invested toward producing green energy projects and manufacturing jobs. So far, the Carbon tax went up again, he banned plastic straws, he’s hitting our farmers with heavy restrictions on fertilizer, because it’s not green enough. \nMany of our indigenous communities have been living for years with contaminated water. He promised he was going to ensure the indigenous communities have access to clean drinking water. He has not fulfilled that promise. \nHe’s bidding $30 billion dollars to hopefully sign a deal to manufacture electric car batteries for Volkswagen. \nHe’s investing in other projects, as well. Unfortunately, he’s only investing in eastern provinces. \nSo far, there has been no investments in western provinces yet. Many of the out of work oil and gas workers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are still waiting on the jobs they were promised. \nLow wages, high inflation, high taxes and high income housing is bringing a lot of us to our knees. \nOur leader is corrupt. It seems like every week there is another corrupt scandal he and his government are involved in. \nI can’t speak for every Canadian, but I can say with absolute certainty that a large number of us are sick and tired of our current leader. Most of us live with the hope that if our leader can get voted out. Canada may have a chance to go back to the way our beautiful country used to be.

Canada's strengths are it's 10 million sq/km of resources. Canada is afraid to extract resources because the green agenda has hijacked Canadian politics.\nIf Canada extracted and processed more resources of more types it could build an ecosystem of low cost/high quality inputs that would attract billions in industrial investments.

Where are these millions of new immigrants going to work? Since the election of Liberals, Canada has had the slowest growing economy in the industrialized world! The world expects Canada's lacklustre performance to continure for the next 20 years. So are these new immigrants coming with suitcases full of money to invest in new companies? Are the skilled tradesman coming from developed nations with similar building codes and material or from countries that build houses without any codes or inspection? Do the Medical Doctors receive the same education as 1st world doctors or are they like doctors in most developing and 3rd world countries where they enter medical school straight from Grade 11 and graduate 4-5 years later with a medical degree and their medical experience is all with 3rd world diseases? OR what is more likely is that these new immigrants will have to go back to school (paid for by Canadian taxpayers) to bring their education and skills to the minimum level of Canadians? It will take the average new immigrant 6-10 years before they are making a net positive contribution to the Canadian economy. This would be affordable if our economy was outpacing other industrialised nations OR if we had fewer immigrants but this is a strategy for bankruptcy. My prediction is that the Canadian dollar will be $0.60 USD within 5 years or less. My recommendation is start moving your savings and retirement funds to the USA.

How Dirty immigrants can help United State. I don’t care too much about them, but I want to share what we can get from these immigrants and how we can exploit everything and take advantage. \n \n1. Cheaper Tacos. \nI’m seeing some crazy Taco prices in my area. But We can lower the cost of tacos by bringing in more immigrants. Be a Great person without doing anything! \nWe want to be good neighbors, but my room is just too comfy. I know that feeling but you don't get many chances in life to help someone, this is our chance! Also, they are doing all the work. Let us all pretend that we did something and let them in. There are Church groups and Organization and if they are lucky, they might have family member. Our government could also pitch in if they really want as they can think of them as a small investment. We have abandoned neighborhoods and empty buildings and I would rather have hard-working people take over instead of all these crack-up druggies calling themselves homeless. We need to have our own Giant Factories and more Labor force and Health care worker relief. Let them in but they must work hard and cheaply and take Jobs most Americans don't want as they are starting from the bottom. Until they master English, they are not a threat to any jobs that you might want, and most don't even bother to learn which is good for us. \n \nHealthcare workers are working too hard. Let’s use migrants and help them out, immigrants can do all the labor-intensive and poop work so our healthcare workers can focus more on the health of the patients. This will reduce hospital bills since labor is a major cost to any business. We will also all receive better care at the hospital. \n \nUS companies and foreign companies are building factories in India or in Mexico when the same workers are at our doors. Let's build them here in the USA and we English speakers will have to manage them unfortunately since that’s the language of the Country. If you speak Spanish and English, you are going to have many jobs. \nEverything important should be made in America with all these workers. We can all have our own factories and business and exploit cheap labor flocking to our Great Country. We must use this to our advantage while it lasts. \nCheap labor we can Build houses that are affordable. Fix all the infrastructure we have been crying about. \n \n5. If War we're ready! \nIf we ever have another World War first one to go are minorities and poor people so, not only does it provide us with a bigger army, but you might not be first to get drafted. Not only that but because we have immigrants we would have stronger ties to those immigrant countries which can come in handy later. This whole situation is untenable. It is devastating to the migrants that have to leave their homes and try to enter either the United States or Canada to apply for asylum. No amount of border protections or treaties or walls will solve the problem. And that problem is the political, economic, and social conditions in their countries of origin. In my opinion, Canada and the United States (more so the United States) need to step up to see if there’s any way to help politically and economically stabilize those so people would not need to leave their homes in search of a better life. Yes, it would cost money… But there would be definite dividends in the future as we would no longer have to invest as much money on our borders. I very much realize not only the complexity of the problems in Latin American countries, but also the complexity of what I am suggesting. But everything we have done so far has been useless, so we need to change our thinking.

I think most ppl have to remember it’s a British Colony we still pay the Queen(kinda embarrassing) Usa had seen this problem for more than 200 years ago. Personally I think they leave Canada with a low population with mostly submissive immigrants and people who fled from war torn countries as bargaining chips as they would be less likely to complain against the same ppl who invited them. Just remember the fiasco with the Syrians a couple years back. Canada hasn’t been the same since the 90s those were good times to invest. Well the governments of Canada have made it illegal for us to express our views. As a white English Canadian I don't think most of us hate people because they came from abroad. If people came to Canada and actually became Canadians I don't think 90% of people have an issue with that. The problem is people are coming here and are not assimilating. Especially the people from Asian and African nations. But this is not surprising to me because their culture is so different from ours. I would prefer immigrants came from northern Europe especially the British Isles and France due to having a shared history, values, and culture similar to Canada. \n\nThe other issue is mass immigration mostly only benefits wealthy people because they get cheap labour. People coming from countries with a much lower standard of living are used to earning less and living with less so they depress wages for working people here. The so called skilled immigrants that our government tells us will solve all of our nations problems are not. No one recognizes their skills here so they end up taking jobs away from other Canadians. \n\nI think Canada's solution would be to stop relying on foreigners and invest in Canadian people. I would cut immigration levels by 75%. I would limit immigrant applicants to make up only 5% from one country. Also we should only allow Canadian citizens to own property. Dual citizenship should be eliminated. You should only be loyal to Canada. \n\nThe government should also stop spending money on Black lives Matter, criminals, drug addicts, and other socialist non-sense. Government spending and taxes should be cut in half and free enterprise should be encouraged. We should be using money towards infrastructure and education. We should be training Canadians to become engineers, doctors, and skilled tradesmen. I would rather invest in our own people that try to accommodate foreigners.

I would still take our medical system over the American system without a second thought. Compared to the US we have had debit (Interac) at retail point of sale since the late '80s/early '90s, and email money transfers (Interac eTransfer) since the late '90s/early '00s, long before the US had anything comparable such as PayPal, and apps like CashApp or Venmo effectively have no marketshare in Canada because of the long history of having email money transfers.\nLastly, for the cell phone plans, you are 100% correct, though we still don't have true unlimited, and only on plans including 5G service. However, there are some mitigating factors such as the high ratings of the network quality and stability for all major cell carriers despite wide swaths of our geography having little to no population and rugged topography. It's not an easy country to cover properly or reliably without it being expensive. Though Canadian telecom and cableco profits are through the roof, as are those of the big 5 banks. We definitely need more competition, though I'm not sure foreign companies coming in are the way to go with this.\nAlso, technologically speaking many important technological and scientific R&D is being conducted here and innovations are made here all the time, but in many ways, these companies get traction outside of Canada long before they get traction here.

Wow reading many of the comments makes me think 'yikes'. Too many people see immigrants as creating a bigger problem (and cannot see how they are the solution). I'm reading the exact argument that was made all through out Canada's history, yet it is the immigrants that brought in fresh ideas and foreign investment. And Canada has been a shining success because of our immigrants. You'd think that people would realize this by now.

If he would have invested the 28k into something in India would have been better for him. 1billion people in India. That equals a lot of potential clientele.

Yes the racism is very high here. \nMany people come here for a better life but that is very hard to find now days in Canada. Governments here, on every level have let Canadians down . They stopped investing in affordable housing. They haven’t provide enough placement for education of medical staff over decades and now we don’t have enough nurses and doctors. \nWe need better educated voters but of course they don’t put enough money into education. It’s seems people prefer voting for bullies rather than people who actually care about the people and the land that feeds us. Jagmeet Singh is s good leader but would Canadians vote in a person of colour with an agenda to actual help the people and the environment, probably not. It really is sad because Canada did provide a lot more for people in the past. Many leave their own country, and come to Canada BECAUSE of their dislikes; extremism, culture, religion, laws, identity and in some cases backwards thinking; attempt to turn what we in society would consider as sexist, and discriminatory in some examples….\n\n…however when those same individuals finally achieve citizenship, or in some cases this starts (attempt to change Canadian law(s)) before obtaining citizenship, making moves to force the above, everything they despised, hated or disliked about their own country, into this new country ? Its like, the expectation is that we assimilate to them, not that they assimilate to their new chosen country??\n\nIt appears in some cases, going as far as attempting to rationalize why the the very thing they left their own country for, should now be a part of or have a place in Canadian society….where in any place in the World does this happen? Would it happen? Can you imagine, if I were a guest in someone else’s home, being invited over for dinner, but they had rules…like taking off your shoes when entering their home…or demanded they change their menu that they worked hard making for me to eat..or that I do not put my feet up in the coffee table or furniture…but I said, screw that, I don’t agree with their rules..I’m just going to do what I want! Well, if that is considered a hardship, then maybe they need to rethink their intent.
