In west we associate masked people with killers, thieves, assassins and such. Because women are pretty equal to men, not at 100% but pretty close we desire women to be identifiable when on the streets just as men are identifiable on the streets. So covering your face will probably not be accepted if ever by diverse population like USA that harbours so many different religion on one space and all are supposed to be tolerant and accepted by others. Choice or not women cover their faces so that when men see them they won't have impure thoughts about them. Many Muslims woman are forced to wear niqab and in some cases bribed with money to do, many also do it by choice, so it does happen both ways. Every Muslim who is honest will tell you this.

As a multi generational Canadian, I don't really care whether they cover their face or not. That's their choice. During my life I've seen all these different forms of conservative dress from catholic nuns, to Hutterites to Mennonites and these people are just part of the mix. What this is designed to do is to create a barrier between themselves and the larger society which is fine. I would never interact with one of these woman ever because the thin flimsy barrier makes it clear that she is not interested in talking to anyone for any reason and again this is fine. If she was with a man I would talk only with the man and completely ignore her and if she was with a male child I would talk to the male child, not to her. I don't normally chat with women who are strangers other than now and then in a supermarket line or whatever. This face thingy frees me from the need of chitchat small talk and I'm good with that. In any case we would have absolutely nothing in common.

I can understand how these countries allow women to cover their face like that? \n\nYou don't have a right to do whatever you want, it is limited with rights of other people, in this case my right to be able to identify a person who was participating in/witnessing a crime or an accident or whatever. If you are on public grounds you have no right to conceal your identity and covering face does exactly that. \n\nI personally think their religion is oppressing women and that this is not really a choice for them as they fear hell, or their family abandoning them or worse, but regardless of that, their religious freedom stops where my, and rights of other people begin.

The Niquab is not a requirement in Islam. It's HER personal choice. Even the head scarf is debated but seems to be the norm as a requirement for Muslim women. But many Muslim women do not cover their face and hair. Many wear ALOT of makeup.

God gave us a face with the ability to make gestures so we can communicate. When I look at a niqab covered lady I lose any desire to communicate. And if I'm not mistaken they won't talk to me anyway as I'm an unrelated male. So to say that they are marginalised is true but it is through their own choice. What I find really strange as a westerner living in Indonesia (world's most populous Muslim nation) is that I see more niqabs in Australia (home country) than what I do here in Indonesia.
