Also, why do we have to pay to keep the US border secure? Doesn't the US have the largest military? I'd assume they have one of the largest police forces in the world, not to mention their large government agencies. Why not put some of that defence spending into border security? If it wasn't Trump then I'm sure it's only because he was too busy ordering the National Guard to power hose and pepper spray the 30 or so elderly nuns who had been distributing bottled water to folks demonstrating in support of Black Lives Matter on the hottest day of the year. Satisfied in his victorious battle against the nuns - 9 of whom had been hospitalized for critical injuries including the 92 year old Mother Superior who suffered massive brain bleed, swelling and concussion due to the excessive force of the power hose and an 87 year old nun who lost permanent sight in one eye due to the pepper spray - Trump had the nerve to pose for a publicity shot in front of the church while holding a Bible - UPSIDE DOWN - and scrunching and contorting his face into that hideous trademark scowl he does ever so naturally. Yep. This is the man my fellow Americans chose to represent our nation as President - a man who beats up 90 year old nuns and imposes 25% tax hikes to our ONLY FRIEND in the entire world simply for refusing to accept his invitation for statehood. I mean, come on, Trudeau, is that really asking too much of you? Was it really worth bruising Donny's fragile little ego and sending him into a fit of rage? President Trump and you need to work it all out. As far as blanket tariffs go, I do agree that your goods and services, including tariffs should be mutually broken down to create benefits for all. Part of my lineage is from Quebec, and here USA. We all need to help each other. Laser focus to arrest and put in prison all drug terrorists should be everyone's focus. The wars elsewhere are sidetracking the two of you from standing side by side with one another, as you mention you usually do. Two friends, two parallel united goals, yet I do agree, again, that you said an enemy would rather divide you two than to see you both Triumph over evil! Canada has known for decades that we have put too many eggs in one basket - selling our resources primarily to the USA. We've had tariffs before and worked with them. Yet we still keep selling to the USA. This time is different. In conjunction with the tariffs, we have an American administration that is flat out insulting Canada. Saying we wouldn't exist economically if it wasn't for the USA. It's at a time when the USA won't promise not to use military force to annex land (Greenland) from a decades old ally. A time when clearly Putin is calling in his chips for whatever he has over Donald Trump. Canadians have had enough. We are directing our governments, provincial and federal, to finally, finally break from the north-south trade links. We need to establish stronger east-west trade links. The resources we have are wanted by many countries if the USA does not want them. It does mean much work within Canada. We need to get our AB-BC pipeline finished as well as the new sea terminal so we can ship our crude oil and natural gas to Japan and if need be, to China. We finally need to get out pipeline to the Atlantic coast finished so we can supply the UK and EU with our products. We need to double our rail capacity for shipping potash, uranium, rare minerals to Asia or Europe. Just as Trump hopes for a golden age of American companies coming home and building new plants in the USA, this will be a golden decade for Canada to create transportation corridors to get our resources to other buyers. America will have to look elsewhere for his raw materials. And we all know what that is - RUSSIA. They've already offered their rare minerals and crude oil. This is all clearly a well thought out scenario from the people working behind Trump to dismiss America's allies and trading partners - have us turn against the USA - as the excuse to open the door to Russian imports into the USA.

This wouldn't be so hard on Canada had we not put all our eggs in one basket. Then there is Trudeau red tape & green energy thinking & policies that prevent trade with Europe & other Countries.

They have been putting our corporations out of business that compete with them here by giving those Canada companies subsidies so they can sell their materials cheaper than ours. It’s really crazy how people were so happy to pay more money for everything when Biden’s people manipulated us to think it was important to support Ukraine’s war and that was why prices were going up. Now, no one wants to support businesses coming to the US. \nThere are way worse things than prices going up for a few years. We do need to start chipping away at that $36trillion. We are the 1st country to not go belly up with the GDP ratio to debt as high as ours. Economists that aren’t connected to our government and top CEO’s said last year that it didn’t matter who was president, our dollar will reset and our economy will crash. So, somebody has to do something. Trump and his people has to think outside the box to stop it. Especially if interest rates don’t go down, because if we can’t pay the interest and our corporations can’t either, the crash will happen.

Canada should block all US imports, not just put tariffs on US goods. No one in Canada will buy US goods anyway.

Looking in from the out side I applaud Trudeau on his speech. But........ Canada needs the USA more than the USA needs Canada. Trump is who the United States elected by a majority. No games..... no fraud..... He IS THE Average large pickup driving, loud and rude American. He Is America and the rest of the world needs to take note.\n\n To be fair, in historical terms, the USA was created to be isolated and different than Europe. They went to War to become an independent country away from Europe. This whole idea that they follow Europe everywhere is only a small blip in history since WW2, they were never set up to be that.\n\n If Anything, the rest of the world should see there mistake in becoming so dependent on the USA. You should never put that much faith and trust in just one country.

Canada has done nothing but put out propaganda. Canada is a Liberal country that interferes with our elections. Now if I want to know how to adjust my fake eyebrows or how to talk tough while having a small population and only one neighbor that happens to be an ally and the world's super power then I'll ask Trudeau and the Canadians for their input. One thing Trudeau is good at is talking. Eloquent words and well said, unfortunately words will not put food on my table. However, again, that was a very very nice speech.

I do not blame Canada one bit for coming back at Donald Trump. He deserves whatever Canada puts up on him.

But oh my, in my many years of experience I have never seen Canadians united the way we have become as a result of threats eminating from the US. For this, we are putting our differences aside and uniting as one. I’m not a Trudeau fan, but he speaks - very well - for our nation.

I have to I’m happy to see him actual find his federal spine!!! This speech was clear, constructive, professional and one that I can back! I’m willing to put up with the pain for the sake of our pride! He needs now to actually follow up with firm action, both in tariffs,reducing electricity, natural gas, oil as well as giving support to those Canadians who will need them,

The speech of Mr Trudeau, the way Canadians have shown solidarity for one another, today it all puts my country, The US, to shame. I am ashamed of what my government is doing and I am disgusted with the people doing it. In Mr Trump’s first term, as eclipsed as they were by the many many many actions and attitudes he imposed on us that embarrassed and hurt us as a country, there was the rare occasional decision I could at least understand even if I did not support it. Since taking office literally not one thing he has done has made sense to me as an American. I can only say how sorry I am for what the country I love is being used to do to you all, especially our closest allies and friends and in particular the people of Canada today. I grew up in Commerce Twp Michigan. I visited Canada regularly and, even as crime from Detroit poured across the border into Canada, Canadians always treated us with respect and welcome. I never imagined that would stop but now I find it hard to imagine how it might continue and it breaks my heart.

Americans obviously didn’t understand what tariffs are, didn’t get that it’s an import tax which they must pay on goods and products they buy from Canada, a tax which tRump collects from Americans and uses to pay for tax-cuts for the richest citizens. But one more thing Americans don’t get is that before this fateful day an unofficial boycott against ALL US goods has been growing since tRump insulted Canada’s Prime Minister and threatened Canada’s sovereignty—whereas Canada’s official countervails ( which only kicked-in today )only target certain US goods, not ALL of them like ordinary Canadians are doing in growing numbers right now—in fact, the imposition of tRump’s tariffs today has only made the unofficial boycott bigger and more organized. It’s heartening that so many nations have solicited Canada, offering alternative sources for common US exports to Canada —citrus fruits, pharmaceuticals, and other manufactures, to name a few.\n\nI don’t think Canadians even realize how big this unofficial boycott is getting because it’s growing so fast. I’ve never seen a surge in Canadian patriotism like this. Never in my seven decades —which includes the two Referenda on Quebec separation. And there’s a federal election approaching when all partisans will be one-upping each other in the patriotism department—which manifests in more boycotts of US goods and hospitality services.\n\n Americans should know that the unofficial boycott is more harmful to US exporters than the official targeted countervails because it features immediate and longterm diminishment of Canadian purchases of US goods—all retailers know it’s very hard to recover lost customers once they’ve found alternatives (and the added patriotic effect only makes it worse). Included is diminishment of Canadian visits to the USA. Indeed, the internet is replete with testimonies of Canadian”snow birds” not only forgoing their annual sojourn in the Florida or Arizona sunshine but also of selling their properties there with the parting shot, “I will never vacation in the US again!” Already Mexico has seen its visits from Canadians (who have had a modest presence in Mexico for years) surge to unprecedented levels. I know from much-welcomed temp Mexican construction workers in BC (where I live) that they view Canadians completely differently from our mutual US neighbours—and now that affection is growing like never before. \n\nI’m continually amazed at how uninformed Americans are about tariffs—and misinformed by tRump and his goofy, preposterous, and ridiculous fantasy of world-domination. When tRump uses the lame excuse to implement emergency powers —that Canada is “allowing” (as Vance puts it) fentanyl to “pour into the USA”—it’s tantamount to saying Ukraine started the war with Russia.
