I knew an undocumented young woman who was living with her 1 yr old baby and her undocumented husband in NC. He started beating her up really badly so she called the cops. The cops arrested them both, even though he was the clear aggressor. They sent the baby off to cps and cps sent the child back to her extended family in Mexico. She spent 3 years in the county jail, never having access to proper medical care, fresh air & greenery or money for commissary or phone minutes. She was still in the early stages of learning English so she was unable to properly advocate for herself before she made bilingual friends and she couldn’t even read the English books in the county jail. Last I heard, she had finally been transported to a huge ICE detention facility in Georgia, but her case was still in limbo and she still had not seen her daughter 4 years later?\n\nShe was such a sweet young woman and what happened to her was so cruel, inhumane and totally undeserved. People who advocate for mass deportation are asking for millions of more stories just like hers, but with even more violence, since Trump would have to use storm troopers to do raids and papers checks so they can kidnap the 20 million people they want to deport.

Canadian (Albertan here) - yes, i don't think i'd move to the States unless it was reasonably close (maybe Montana) with fewer people - i'd like to identify as a Hermit :). I motorcycle and have travelled majority of the States, from coast to coast, and i really do like the country side and scenery, and history, that you run through. I do a 4000-6000 mile tripe every year or two - did Tennessee last year, and Colorado this summer. A lot of absolutely amazing country really, and yes some really great people as well. Have run into some real odd people as well and some places i wanted to get out of pretty quick. I do like the fact the US hasn't bought into this woke agenda and politically correctness - it's absolutely nuts up here. I like the gun laws in the States, too bad we're so screwed over that in Canada. I lived in the US; Virginia for 13 years. For the most part the people are lovely... just like a lot of places. If you treat people with kindness; they usually return that kindness. At least that is my experience. Mind you, I came home in 2006. When I lived there the political climate was completely different. I would absolutely NOT move back to the US. When I came home to Canada; I was so grateful because I had to endure 2 years without Healthcare when I really needed it. I lived on pain pills at that time. I was in a wheelchair by 2008 and so grateful that I was home where my country took care of me when I was unable to work, or even walk. \n\nPolitics has changed so much since then. Really ironic to read some of the comments here. Maduro rules Venezuela by decree of his party's legislature. He refused to accept the results of the elections in which his opponent won in 2018 and deployed the military to kill dissenters. This is EXACTLY what Republicans wanted to have done in the US: have Trump rule by SCOTUS decree and deploy the military to counter Democrat and Independent protestors.

My parents came illegally but became citizens thru the amnesty from Bill Epstein i mean Clinton, i was born here in California, even though i love my Mexican heritage i still think this is wrong, we need more border control but we also need to be able to make it easier for the good people to come here legally. Donald trump was not racist he was speaking the truth alot of these immigrants are bringing drugs over alot of them are bad people who will cause alot of problems over here for us thats why we need a screening process but a better one than we have now because the one we have now is very expensive and takes way too long, we could use the extra labor from people who want to come and actually work. There’s also more Chinese immigrants than mexican so we need to get a hold of that too , but these Central Americans trying to come in the country alot of them are gang members and most of them are poor and have no resources so when they get here they will become gang members and cause problems because they have no structure and thats all they know. During the 1930's much of the European media and even as far as the UK was ramping up the scorn against the ever increasing influx of Jewish immigrants coming from Germany. Even into 1944 there was a vast amount of demonisation of them seeking asylum, despite the knowledge by this point that there were horrific conditions in camps where extermination was becoming ever more apparent. I get that there will be many here who support Trump, many who support Biden, there will be Brit's who support Sunak and the rather vicious words of Suella Braverman, whilst others will be more on the side of Starmer (I'm well aware of all the other parties but they don't stand to gain as much). There will be French people backing Macron, whilst others back Le Pen. We could go through each country all the way to the battle between Fujimori and Castillo in Perú, and the stories are much the same, but how will history judge us when people look back to this time? Will it be another occasion where we demonised those trying to escape the horror of the place they had the bad luck to be born in whilst we were luckier? \n\nI know there is hardship everywhere. I'm struggling more than most and I know I can't keep living this way. However, I don't want to be a part of history people look back at and say ‘if only they did something to help prevent this.’. I would rather be a part of history people look back upon and say; ‘that was a boring time period where nothing important happened’. It's already too late for that. Instead I try to remember that, though I was born into a family who never really wanted me, I was lucky enough to be born into a country that could support me during the hardest times. When you look at immigrants, remember that every one of us has immigrants in our family tree somewhere.
