I don't know.... I live in Montreal and I don't see recent newcomers as poor victims (I'm talking about most immigrants applying for refugee status) . \nWhy? \n1. In order to reach North America , one has to either cross the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean or cross huge chunks of land from Central or South America .... and that's really expensive. In Europe, since the coast of Africa is very close to Europe's , boats full of destitute and desperate people might be the norm. Not in North America. \n2. most of those guys arrive in North America looking for work \n3. most newcomers do possess smart phones and they know how to use them. They have their own network of friends and they're always on the lookout for good opportunities. \n4. most newcomers are very, very mobile. If they're having trouble finding work in Montreal and they need truck drivers somewhere else.... they'll go there . A new hospital needs aid personnel? They'll be there ready for hard work. \nThe positives ? They're probably working , making money and paying taxes. \nThe negative side? They're for the most part economic immigrants. It seems to me like most will have a hard time convincing immigration judges that they are actually refugees (economic refugees? if you will? ). \nMy take ? The way Federal Government deals with immigration should be changed. I believe that if immigrants already work here and are taxpayers... they should have working visas (at least temporarily). \nUndocumented criminal caught in the act of committing a crime? Immediate deportation (and I know this is obviously a lot easier said than done). \nMore airport screening at the entrance and more border security.

I am shocked to hear this from a CBC reporter saying IMMIGRANTS get money from the government!! Where on earth did you get this ,outrageous information!! People who apply to come to Canada as legal immigrants , have to go through a strict points system.that can take years . Plus medical and security checks. They have to speak English or French , be educated and most of all have a skill ,trade or profession that Canada needs!as Canada does not have enough highly skilled workers. Like IT professionals, doctors ,engineers, nurses etc. They have to have a job offer .etc etc .They have to have the means to support themselves and their family . Secondly when talking about refugees the ones who come across the border with no documentation, come on their own and do not fall in the 3 categories you mention? How outrageous are you to say the ones coming in illegally across the border are 1 privately sponsored, 2 government sponsored 3 or mix of both! We don't have more spaces and jobs to accommodates.. They are big burden to local governments. These students in one room 4 or 5 peoples. The USA needs to secure their borders with the military weapons??

We really need to find a better way to secure our border. Why don’t these people fix their countries so that they can stay in them??.

The Border surely is not secured right at all we needs somebody to make sure it is secured and keep them illegals out of our country and stop sending money and do right for our own country USA.

I think the best plan is to immigrate to Canada first, spend a few years there, get work experience, and become a Canadian, apply for a high paying job in the US right before you are about to become a Canadian. That way you get both a high paying job and the mental security that even if you get deported somehow all you needed to do is to a drive a fully packed Uhaul across the border.

I am a Texas National Guard soldier that has been on the border mission. I am Hispanic, and I have served to defend our border and our fellow Americans. We need border security more than anything, especially during the crisis of inflation that we have when we can’t even take care of our own people in our country. CNN is garbage.

It's heartbreaking to see people desperate to want a better life for their families but you need strong borders so that you control who comes to your country and how they come and the population sees some order to it. Then they might support an orderly migration program. Here in Australia we do have the advantage of the world's largest moat, however, we have a very generous (relative to our population) refugee and immigration program that we can implement by keeping our borders secure.

What we need is to disband the Department of Homeland Security, and then to roll up the Border Patrol,Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement with the United States Coast Guard into a new Armed Forces branch that I'd call the United States Border Guard, which would have military jurisdiction over the borders, the coastlines and the airports.

I’m sorry but America can’t be the savior to the world. Our patriotism and laws mean that we are one of the most free nations and a large percentage of us would fight and do fight to keep our nation secure. Sad reality is that not all countries have the laws we do… and that sucks. But the world needs to understand that our laws and our freedoms end at our borders. Life unfortunately is not fair and some have to endure the realities of where they were born. If we let everyone in who wants to come then our country would be in much worse shape than it already is.

We need Israeli border security

As a Mexican Citizen awaiting for my American visa this angers me. The entitlement nerve of these people is unbelievable. I live in Northern Mexico in the state of Chihuahua. This occurred about 4 hours from where I live & I have seen a huge surge in the last couple years of illegal immigrants coming through. We not only need a secure border up here with the states but also in our Mexican Southern border.

So glad Kamala Harris is taking care of securing our border… this administration is a fuckn joke! We need TRUMP!!
