I am a home owner in Canada. Many of my friends can't afford homes in suburbs or remote locations and they are earning more than average folks do.

I've been flipped a bill that the government has done just to pocket their there. Money and no pay taxes. This is the billionaires that I'm talking about. Born and Raised in Canada and there is another sort of comparison I'm starting to see more and more: We have the Stagnation of Japan and the the Personality of Britain. \n\nWhat I mean by that, the people in Canada, least the older ones (Boomers), got very conservative and never wanted to rock the boat and do new things. And that is what I think happened to Britain after they got resettled after WWII. Britain is pretty dry. And so is Canada. Hence our forest fires!

An average 3 bedroom home in Ontario is like 750k+, unless you go somewhere where there's like no jobs then they are like 600k, and probably need a lot of work

I don't understand the comparison of housing debt to GDP ratio being relevant, other than as some kind of made up benchmark. GDP is an annual number, and mortgages last for decades. How is comparing these numbers directly a measure of anything other than the amount of money invested in mortgages has increased? I would think Household income to Household debt is a more useful measure, but then again, it doesn't capture the amount of capital people have in their homes.

As a home owner (with a mortgage) and nearing retirement, my first reaction is that I want housing prices to remain high so I can get the most from my house when I downsize. \nHowever, my house sale is so I can downsize into a home that I can buy outright with the money I get from selling my bigger current house. If my house value goes down, I would be OK as long as the price that I would pay from a smaller home also goes down. I want to live in a home that would have no mortgage. I will only get the minimum income in retirement so I need to be in a home without a mortgage payment, if at all possible.

Home ownership numbers are skewed, pretty sure anyone a part of a homeowner’s family living there is counted as a homeowner.

Our city governments need to liberalise the housing market, in most cities across Canada it's illegal to build anything other than single family homes. When the developers eventually do push through a multi family building, they have to build a mega tower to offset the costs of the often 2 years approval process. Which makes people hate development more

After gaining work experience in their own country, they can apply for legal immigration to Canada by going through the entire immigration process.
