I'm just speculating, but obviously Trump's stated reasons for the tariffs against Canada don't reflect his real strategy. He wants to exert maximum pain and pressure on the current liberal government in Canada so that its more likely a conservative like Poilievre will get elected. Then, he'll end the tariffs handing him a victory and thus solidifying a conservative influence. Maybe. In any case, he wants more influence over Canada and its unnerving to watch.

Congratulations, America! You might as well erase the word 'United' from 'United States of America.' And don’t forget who made this happen—your senator and your president!

It’s blatantly obvious what’s happening next, big tariffs on the EU and NATO will be reducing/eliminated. \nThe US has accepted the reality that it is no longer has global hegemony, therefore some of these actions are logical if painful. The EU should have control of its own defence, it is ridiculous that it doesn’t as it is sufficiently wealthy to do so with ease. Mexico and Canada should only target with tariffs, US products made in Republican states.

We were planning a family trip to the USA next month. Instead we are going to Dominican Republic. That's 8000$ not going in the United States economy. Oh well.

Hopefully people around the world respond by buying as little as possible from the US (especially from the billionaires and states that support Trump). Trump is going to try to divide and conquer, and if the US will attack Canada, no democracy is immune.

As an American it feels a bit extreme, but all Canada has to do is attempt to fix their border, but your leaders would rather choose war. OK. 75% of Canadian exports go to the US while you only take 12% of ours exports. This will be a bloodbath. If Canada was a state in the USA, it would be the 4th largest economy. I have family that is from Canada, this makes me sad.

The regular people will suffer. Canada and Mexico will suffer more. The US economy is very big and dynamic. It will absorb tariffs. Trump's foreign policy is going to be very predatory. These trade wars have the potential to spill into other areas: Diplomatic and military in which Mexico and Canada cannot match the United States. The next four years are going to be turbulent.

Llet's remember that the US GDP is 30.34 trillion dollars. Canada is only 2.33 trillion. Just one of the fifty States, California, has a GDP of over 4 trillion, almost twice as much as Canada. The total amount imported from Canada to the US per year is about 450 billion US dollars of goods. The US has the advantage by far in staying power here. Plus, Canada's leadership is on uncertain grounds, and Trump has a unified constituancy. He won all the swing States after all. I for one hope it all works out, but it's going to be Canada that will throw in the towel.
