I am a Canadian who moved to the States. I never wanted to but I fell in love with an American and it made sense for me to move down after we got married. I has finished school and he was not yet. 17 years later and I still miss Canada but life down here will do. I moved to the border so I could have my cake and eat it too.

First of all, the United States is a country of misfortune for me, I'm sorry if it sounds abrupt, but how I see it!\n\nHonestly I think that for the reputation of the country and their people, it will never change if the question of weapons is not settled! (Yes again the weapons) Because that's what comes back the most how many people there are in the cemeteries who didn't ask for anything and who died by a bullet lost by the mass killings in the schools or by psychologically crazy speaking who should have ever had a gun in their hands! Whenever the question is asked it is always the reason for patriotism or the constitutional right to bear arms!\n\nThere is absolutely nothing normal and natural about going to Walmart and walking out with a rifle or a semi-automatic weapon without more regulations or investigation of the person who wants to buy the weapon in question. Never in the life does it exist in Quebec or even in any similar place in Canada! We would say at times that the United States and Canada are two different planets and not territories on the same continent.\n\nAnd also it's funny that the country is called ''United States'' while people are divided like never before with racism and political opinions whether your more (Republican) or (Democrat). Believe me, I'm not happy to make this comment because I would like to love you more! And of course I don't put everyone in the same boat I know you're not all like that! But shit wake up!!! Can't you see that there is something wrong with you!?

NO. Never. Wonderful natural areas and cities to visit on vacation, but America has a personality disorder that's out of control. Not in any order except how they came to me:\n(1) the American Dream vs the Candian ideal. (2) In many places, any stranger you pass on a street or see anywhere may be legally armed with a gun. (3) Babies to adults -- all can be murdered over and over again, and nothing changes. (4) Healthcare - the idea people thing they shouldn't take care of others is appalling to me. (5) Religious fanaticism - nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. (6) Rampant racism alongside denial of the existence of racsim; nope again x 10. (7) What used to be creeping corruption is now rampant all the way to the Supreme Court (8) 50% of the people want authoritarian fascist for a leader corrupt Supreme Court ... Is that enough for now?

Would not ever move there. Don’t even know when I would visit there again. Maybe I’d like to go (very many great places & things to do, lots of interesting history) but I don’t really want to take a chance with all the problems there. Probably won’t be going. Not to mention the insanity that has taken hold with so many ppl- crazy crazy times - I don’t even want to say I’m Canadian down there anymore because we get such ridiculous comments. I’ve even had people turn away if they find out I’m Canadian. Yes of course it depends on where you go blah blah blah but it’s exhausting & risky so really not worth it right now. I am Canadian, I was born here in the 60's, I've travelled around the world, including the US but have always lived and worked in Canada. I love my country. saying that now....\nThe last 10 years for Canada has been the worst ever in history, our government has destroyed the foundation of what it means to be Canadian and has made this country look very bad on the world stage.\nEventually that will change. This currently gives reasons why a Canadian wants to move from Canada.\nYou are right about the US, there are places you can move to that offer quiet, country, safe living but like Canada, those places usually trade the good life for lack of opportunity.. the difference is most of Canada gives you the good life and opportunity in the same place. A good example, Billings Montana or Red Deer Alberta... if you compare the 2, they are close, but overall life in Red Deer would be better.\nCulture has changed thoughts too, I could never get used to seeing anyone other that law enforcement carrying a gun.. The attitude that America is the greatest country in the world, where do they get off? America is the only free country? I think not. Abortion issue, the new bullcrap happening with TRANS and LGTBQXYZ and I have to play along with their mental disorders and fantasies, no thank you. I do not want to walk down the street in fear of my life, why in GOD's name would I want to live in a country that is the equivalent of a school bully.

I don't think I would move to the U.S. for many reasons. Healthcare is great in Canada. I don't think I'd be able to afford insurance in the U.S. , I also would be afraid of guns, the coastlines will rise by the 2030s, so my dreams of California and New York are out as well, never mind the outrageous cost of living there and being an arts person, I wouldn't want to be there now with the strike. I don't think I'd be affected as a stand-up comedian, but the opportunities would be way less with the industry shut down.

Not Canadian but... back in the 80s and 90s America seemed like the coolest place ever, cosmopolitan and progressive in a way the UK wasn't. Then I grew up. The Internet got invented. I got to talk to Americans, hear US news and politics that never made it to the UK. Then Trump and Qanon happened. Now there is no way in hell I'd want to live there. Bankruptcy inducing healthcare, religious fanatics everywhere and the risk of getting shot on the daily? No thanks.

Sorry Tyler, but given the current social and political environment in the USA I do not want to visit the country and definitely never move there.\n\nThe challenge for me is the realization that Canada was built on community, while I see many (too many) Americans fiercely independent and not seemingly caring about anyone but themselves. \n\nCanada IS NOT PERFECT. We have gang violence, drug issues, racism, homelessness, poverty, inefficient political and bureaucratic system, but in general I feel that people will be more polite and helpful to each other than in the US.

As a French Canadian im aware of some discrimination about the funding of our community, School dont really get the money for new infrastructure. some of our building becoming more old and not really great to use i still like my place thought and i will never consider to move to the USA. I'm Japanese and I've been to many countries, and as objectively viewed, Canada is the worst racist, Western supremacist nation. In short the worst aggressive racist country on this planet. I've never wanted to visit again. Actually, it's quite risky to be in Canada as an Asian or a Japanese. Canada is the only country that systematically massacred people of Japanese descent who were inhabiting in Vancouver Island, Canada genocided the Japanese civilians in Vancouver. Needless to say, Canada also genocided millions of Aboriginals who have the same genes as the Japanese. Even the Islamic State would be slightly better than Canada.

Finally the truth about this ruthless business of making money off poor kids who are sold a dream of good life and send to live a life which is actually a nightmares. I was a student in Canada and seen this first hand. Students packed in rooms and colleges cancelling semesters for new students. This is all true. Even the best colleges do that. Every Indian who wants to go to Canada take this as a warning plz. Not that many people in the developed world are shopping for an alternative country. So I imagine most Americans and most Canadians will be content with their nation of birth. But as a Canadian, I have to admit I'm a bit scared of the US. The level of violent crime down there is such that _many_ (not all) people feel they need guns for personal security. American prison rates testify to a level of desperation and alienation that is _not_ appealing to me. I don't want to live somewhere where owning a deadly weapon seems like a sensible idea! Also, as a struggling creative/entertainment person, I can't guarantee I'll be consistently earning good money – there are plenty of lean times in my biz. I don't want to be repeatedly worrying about my health coverage disappearing, whenever work dries up. I've never had that type of anxiety in Canada, and I sure appreciate that. Btw, although the Canadian health system is a long way from perfect, I've always managed to get appropriate care, according to my needs, quickly enough, at no cost to myself. And currently, I really like my GP _and_ my specialists!

We lost our republic in the 1870s and since then corporate America has controlled every aspect of our lives. We’ve lived under an elusive veil of freedom for over a century. You have to pay the government their share for everything, private business isn’t legal without government permission, can’t hunt/fish without government involvement, can’t build a self sufficient home without government involvement and regulation. It’s called the fucking internet, And maybe 5% of Americans took advantage of that and informed themselves. The other 95% just soaked up YT and Tik Tok while they make repugnant Baaa Baa claims about the left and right. Just constantly feeding into this division THEY created. There’s underlying parts of our government that fight this, and get people they don’t particularly like in the door. Like the Kennedy’s and Trump but we have no value in voting. I think most Americans want to know our borders can be protected. I hope this is not result of some US interest policy from 20 years ago. Within the US, the focus is always on the [repeated] effects, and never the causes. Heck current educational legislation is banning the causes.

Close the border. Americans tax dollars shouldn't have to pay for refugees when they're struggling to get by themselves. People can't afford to go to college in the U.S., it's so expensive. Cost of living goes up all the time. I have multiple degrees and can't really find a job and when I do, they always want to pay very low and def much lower than they started your counterparts at. There's a ridiculous homeless issue in the U.S. where I've met plenty that apply for jobs all the time and do not get hired. They even ask random people if they can work for them just for food, literally just for food. There are people everywhere that take things for granted including the U.S. but that's not the issue here. There are U.S. leaders that steal your money in taxes and retirement funds then misuse the funds. How is it fair for a hard working individual to have 30% of their gross removed from there paycheck then still required to pay the government when filing income taxes. You can buy a house, pay it off and never own it. The government is your forever landlord because property taxes are always due and are increased whenever authorities want them increased. Every country has serious issues.

Latin here, I came here legally but I can tell you that it was difficult as hell for my mom to bring me here, it took money and years for that, but I want you as a fellow citizen to understand their situation first, in Latin America you could be graduation from college and even with that having a good job it’s difficult sometimes, unlike here education in Latin America is not always something that all people can get and every time they vote for someone it becomes more trashier, housing for the poor doesn’t even exist, half of the country is corrupt and going outside you don’t who you may find, my brother needs to wait 7 years to become a resident (not citizen) he will be 30 something at that point, what the government should do is make the residency easier and I can tell you something like this wouldn’t occur that easily, my mom is a lawyer in my country and I can tell you the situation wasn’t easy, every three times a week there would be shooting outside my house, drug dealer was my neighbor, and at the age of 15 there would parents of two kids the sad part all this is normal, stopping it is imposible because it gets you kill, the police will kill you for doing a peaceful protest just to stop feminicide, wanting your kid to go outside without being scare something would happen to them, this people want peace and a job that is it and when your own country doesn’t even give you the right for that how could you live? Latin America is like living in the worst state in U.S multiply by 1000 and happening the same thing every day, riots or protest are imposible there because you know the police will never go the peaceful way, what this people are doing is wrong but they just want to live, it even surprise how much people hate their president here when in Latin America there hasn’t been any good president in decades. America has fought HARD for centuries to achieve freedom. We’ve shed infinite amounts of blood for the rights we have. Freedom isn’t free. It takes centuries to get to that. People think it sucks to have to spend ten years becoming a legal citizen here, well count yourself lucky that you didn’t have to shed any blood, lose any family members, fight against an oppressive enemy for your rights, or lose your house in a battle for a free country. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look up American history. Count how many battles were fought; how many wars; how many people died; how many Americans became POW’s on our own land during the Civil War. Look how hard it’s been. Look how hard it is now. We never stop fighting for what we want. Freedom takes work. America isn’t some island paradise. It never has been. We all live on the same earth. We all experience hardship. And there’s no amount of money, illegal border crossing, or anything else that can keep us from that harsh reality. In life we’re going to suffer. That’s just how it is. Stop thinking that illegally crossing a border is somehow going to solve all problems. It won’t. The grass isn’t greener on the other side just because. Bloodshed makes that grass green: Sacrifice. Hard, laborious work; and centuries of time.

There are many reasons and many who problems. You can’t just narrow this down to 1 of anything. One problem is for decades children were brought up to believe that when they turn 18 or 21 or when they get a full time job or graduate college it’s time to leave the nest . Why? So you can live the life of a bachelor or bachelorett? Party all night or get drunk and do most things you wouldn’t want your parents to know about. Pay outrageous rental fees for some place you’ll never own. Go into debt and in many cases spend years paying off student loans. Yeah, sounds like a good time. The habit should be if parents have room, stay home, save your money and allow your parents to help build that generational wealth. Pay a small rent to help out a little if you want to and your parents accept it. Some people , if they can marry and stay with their family, at least for a few years. This builds a stronger bond with parents and grandparents. The way the last 40 or 50 years has gone has destroyed family and their are many reasons why. Some of the European traditions are smart and we should never have turned away from them

My mom and dad came from Cuba when my dad wanted out he asked the Cuban government he didn’t sneak across the border like these idiots are doing and the Cuban government put him in a concentration camp for 3 years cutting sugar cane to work for his freedom then he got it and we flew to Spain where he worked his ass off for another 3 years to finally come to the states and when I grew up I gave thanks my joining the Marine Corps and defend this country as a thanks for letting us in and we been working our asses off ever since never once asking for public assistance or taking from this country we pay our taxes and do things the RIGHT WAY! I would never visit Europe, Canada, South America, or Asia because of anti-black racism. The only places I would visit are the African continent, Haiti, Jamaica and Barbados. Need more jobs, lesser rent/lower inflation/removal of businesses not following labor laws/proper housing/homeless housing and job directories. A wall wasnt going to fix the situation, never was -- it was a bit silly dont you think? There shouldve been more put into expanding border patrol, they obviously handle it better. And claiming aslyum has backfired: theyre over-full, lack funding, and no one can remove them because it has become a neccesarity now.\nI dont think they should be denied a potentially better way of life but this wasnt as much an option as they had hoped it be.

I have a theory, but no direct evidence. I suspect that some move back to their home country because they never really intended to live in Canada, they just wanted a Canadian passport as an insurance policy in case things went badly in their country of origin. \n\nDo you know anything about whether that happens, and if it does happen, how often? What proportion of the people who move back does it account for?
