As a Canadian ... I would hope that a Presidential leader would choose to support their country and economy. Stay strong everyone ?

The reality is: the US has reached a record high trade deficit with Canada. This deficit has grown steadily since 1976 (today it is just shy of $100 billion - meaning the US purchases $100 billion more worth of goods from Canada than Canada does from the US). The US imposing tariffs on Canada is a tactic to incentivize US companies who import goods from Canada to move manufacturing/production sourcing back to American soil. This promotes investment and expansion into the US economy. It will also incentivize Canada to commit to investing in the US economy. This would be a negotiation move by Trudeau: we (Canada) will commit to purchasing $25 billion (for example) dollars more of goods from the US if you agree to reduce the tariffs you've imposed on us to blank (maybe 5%). This is likely the end goal Trump is aiming for in the long run.

We're not really THAT polite. Trump's pissing off the whole world, except Putin and Netanyahu who Trump appears to be collaborating with to take over Ukraine and Gaza's economies.

This ONLY makes sense if you're looking to destabilise an economy which in the case of America will cause a global chain reaction... What more does Trump need to do before his spineless party call him out?\n\nLiterally everything Trump has done since 2016 has worked to the direct benefit of Russia and AGAINST the interests of America and its historic allies... Tariffs are bad for the economy and obviously starts a trade war but the USA working with Russia is absolutely unacceptable and very dangerous

Canadian here- I hate Trudeau just as much as most Canadians, and as it seems most Republican Americans do as well. But I fully stand behind him at this hour. He might have shit the bed for most Canadians during his time as PM, but when it mattered he has stood up for Canada. Review the facts and educate yourself on the current situation between CAN and the US. I will be the first to admit, Canada has not done enough in terms of its own security and military, but these failures should not be the decay in our friendship as nations. The US DOES NOT subsidize Canada, it DOES NOT give money to Canada. In simple terms- the larger country, with the largest economy in the world (USA) buys more from its Northern brother, which produces vast amounts of natural resources which the larger southern country requires. As for the booing seen at most recent sports events in Canada, that is directed at the President, not the average American. I myself would never boo a national anthem, an anthem that millions have sacrificed to protect and defend. But I understand the pain and anger that is coming from my country. We have always been allies, friends, and to most even family. I do hope that in the future our relationship can heal and move forward but the current actions being taken by the American admistration are horrendus and upsetting to most of the world outside of the US. I wish us all the best in the future, be nice to one another, and always remember that the US and Canada have fought, spilled blood, and died alongside one another in the fight for democracy and freedom around the world.

I am really sad to see Canada slide. The USA is loaded with 20th Century industrial equipment that still works. Industry really is important to countries with plenty of resources, as Americans are finally realizing.\nToo bad that Canadian agriculture is such a small part of its economy. Housing price growth is good at the beginning, but after 10-20 years, it becomes a burden on the economy becuase of rent, as rent is included in everything u buy or do.\nEventually, it will crush, and so the economy. This video is horrible. I don't know what political angle is, but the real problems are very well known and have nothing to do with what you said. First, housing is incredibly difficult to build in Canada because of regulations and land title problems, I.e., you don't own that land, the indians do. On top of that, there is a constant influx of immigrant that require housing that doesn't exist. Children cry because they cannot leave their parents' houses because they can't move anywhere, so they can't find any jobs locally, and they're trapped. There is no will in the canadian government to change these immigration policies, to change the land rules so that people can own land and build houses, or do anything about their incredibly micro managed economy that makes it impossible to do anything. If so, yeah, they go to the US to have a future while Canada stagnants and dies.

You can’t compare Europe, Canada or any other countries with USA. Because USD is global reserve currency, USA has highest productivity and hence got biggest gdp per capita compared to any other major economy.

As a Canadian who has lived my whole life here, in my opinion there were two major factors that need to be highlighted that started this mess: fiscal policy and focus on fringe politics. First, Canada came out of the 2008 meltdown relatively unscathed due to following a markedly different strategic path than other major countries, namely tight banking regulations as well as 15 years of paying down the national debt. However, several years after 2008, sentiment shifted to adopting the same MMT-led fiscal policies as other nations: lower interest rates and deficit spending. Secondly, at least 10 years ago, there was a major political shift to start emphasizing fringe social issues (climate, race-based, gender, etc.) instead of standard issues such as the economy or military to name two, and it was strongly evident in academia and in the media. The result was little governmental, public or media attention being paid to core economic concerns such as the massive growing government and consumer debt levels, highly inflationary housing market, or decreasing productivity. When COVID hit, the government further doubled the existing federal debt and when they found that unsustainable, opened the doors to massive immigration levels to bring the Debt-per-Capita ratio down which while helping in that one metric, has further inflated the housing market all while forcing wages down. We now have unsustainable public debt levels, unaffordable housing, decreasing wages, decreasing productivity, and a troubling reactionary political swing towards extremist right-wing ideologies. Top that off with the US administration seeing Canada is on an economic precipice and threatening to take the country over, there couldn't be a more perfect storm.

Brief summary: 10 years ago Justin Trudeau gets into power. Investments into the Economy are neglected and frilly social programs are funded instead.

If my country doesn't get housing costs under control they're in serious trouble. The average house in the town I live in is something like 900K and there's basically no local economy. With costs so high I can't afford to start a family. If we keep gaining old folks needing healthcare while keeping housing expenses high and wages low taxes will have to keep going up.\n\nI am not going to continue to pay huge portions of my income for the benefit of the elderly while I can't afford a decent lifestyle. I don't want to but it seems moving to the US or elsewhere is the only option if things continue this way. At list point the local governments are so invested in denying housing permits and abusing zoning laws to prevent housing being built that the only way to fix it would be to strip the provinces and cities of the right to decide their own zoning bylaws. \n\nI want to see a change in the constitution that makes zoning bylaws illegal. There are too many people thinking of their self interest and not of the Nations interest. We deserve to lose the right to decide what can be built in our neighborhoods. We have been abusing this right for too long

GDP is mostly a useless metric to compare any economies and it was made that way intentionally.

why do econimists think infinite growth must be a thing in a finite country? economy stagnation is only a problem when you expect it to grow to infinity wich is obviously redicolous. \nf.e. shrinking/stagnating economies wont be able to keep up with Government bonds. you cant pay out interest charges if you didnt make more money then last year. what if everyone is working 40h with perfect efficiency? you brake the system.

I'm tired of Canada being compared to the US and no one else. Yes, the US is more productive, richer and powerful than Canada, everyone knows that. But they're also all those 3 things to every other economy in the world! Don't stop comparing Canada to the US, but for god's sake, could you throw in some European and Asian countries too?

Canada has many problems and disadvantages which will need to be determinedly addressed in the coming years. However, we have one key advantage over our friends to the south, and one I hope that over time this will increasingly bear fruit: we are not governed by a fascist-adjacent government. Our only political party with policies resembling the American Republicans is polling in the low single digits.\n\nSetting aside the question of whether American Republicans are 'fascist-adjacent', the truth is that much of the world perceives it as such. Our economy is so tied to the US that I would not wish them ill, or at least not very much. However, I think in the competition for talent American politics will be like a 'mark of Cane' on that country for a generation. My guess is that our - in comparison - boring politics will be a key advantage in the years to come.
