We are no in good shape economically to support other countries' economies. We need companies to come back to produce in the USA and those extra charges are an incentive to start producing again in the USA. I'm a Canadian. I am trying to wrap my head around why a President would start a trade war by imposing tariffs that hurt their allies and hurt his own people..!? I am not an economist nor an investor; However I found it interesting that the immediate result of this as they corresponded about this news is how the markets are taking a major dive. If I wanted to make money off the stock market and had no morals and had the power to cause it to crash, I would make sure it crashed hard by imposing tariffs. Then I would invest as many billions in the key stocks that will come back, and watch my billions turn into 10's or 100's of billions...\nThe other possible explanation could simply be that he wants all the critical minerals from Canada, Greenland, Ukraine for nothing. Taking those minerals for free and selling electric cars, miliatary equipment, etc. would be most profitable!\nBut greed seems to know no bounds for those who are wealthy, as long as it's at their gain and not at their expense!

President Trump doesn't care. The US has been subsidizing Canada's electrical grid for over $250 million dollars a year. Canada will loose that. In addition, US automotive industries like stellantis are moving productions back to the US from Canada. Canada has been charging the US dairy products 250% in tariffs, US Bourbon and whiskey 180% for over 4 years. China has been charging Ford 200% tariff so much so that ford can no longer afford to sell their vehicles in China.....all these outrageously high tariffs were designed to protect their domestic products.... China was suposed to spend 4 billion dollars a year in US goods but they have been consistently spending only 1.9 billion each year . Trade deficit of over 2 billion dollars. What sane person would allow this to happen in a free market and call this fair trades????? I have no knowledge of this until recently.

Canada has known for decades that we have put too many eggs in one basket - selling our resources primarily to the USA. We've had tariffs before and worked with them. Yet we still keep selling to the USA. This time is different. In conjunction with the tariffs, we have an American administration that is flat out insulting Canada. Saying we wouldn't exist economically if it wasn't for the USA. It's at a time when the USA won't promise not to use military force to annex land (Greenland) from a decades old ally. A time when clearly Putin is calling in his chips for whatever he has over Donald Trump. Canadians have had enough. We are directing our governments, provincial and federal, to finally, finally break from the north-south trade links. We need to establish stronger east-west trade links. The resources we have are wanted by many countries if the USA does not want them. It does mean much work within Canada. We need to get our AB-BC pipeline finished as well as the new sea terminal so we can ship our crude oil and natural gas to Japan and if need be, to China. We finally need to get out pipeline to the Atlantic coast finished so we can supply the UK and EU with our products. We need to double our rail capacity for shipping potash, uranium, rare minerals to Asia or Europe. Just as Trump hopes for a golden age of American companies coming home and building new plants in the USA, this will be a golden decade for Canada to create transportation corridors to get our resources to other buyers. America will have to look elsewhere for his raw materials. And we all know what that is - RUSSIA. They've already offered their rare minerals and crude oil. This is all clearly a well thought out scenario from the people working behind Trump to dismiss America's allies and trading partners - have us turn against the USA - as the excuse to open the door to Russian imports into the USA.

the current trade deal with Canada and Mexico is something trump bragged about when he negotiated & signed it 6 years ago. Trump called it the USCMA. Less than 1% of fentanyl comes across the northern US border. we can't refine light crude oil we pull out of the ground here so we buy more than 50% of our heavy crude oil and natural gas from Canada. Canada will turn off the pipes and sell the heavy oil and NG to Europe. The second oil supply was Mexico who plans to sell their oil in Europe too. It will be extra cold in the midwest and east coast this winter without fuel oil.

Again 10% tariffs vs 25% tariff. There was a time that china cooperated & worked with the US on this but have since stopped.\nSo whatever is going on with the trump administration, it's clear by the numbers this isn't about fentanyl with Canada.
