I live in the UK and its a similar situation here. Buying a property (especially in the South) is so hard unless you come from money or have a really good job. \nAlso because people cant buy their own homes, landlords can charge obscene amounts for rent because they know people dont have any alternatives. Add that to the cost of living crisis and you have a lot of people feeling trapped and hopeless

As much as I don’t like the guy, it’s misguided saying it’s only Trudeau. Is he the solution? Not likely, but it’s a start. The issue is accountability from the provincial governments who have low voter turnout, and are allergic to investing in diversified transportation or fixing housing, or immigration laws, and taxing rich people more and god forbid they update their labour and health system. So much of these issues were present for years before he was elected, because the country just voted to get out of the recession and cut a ridiculous amount of funding. The Harper years were terrible, people forget that. He wanted to ban abortions. That’s the future his party wants. I think they need a coalition government, badly and to turn it on the provinces to come up with plans before asking for money.

I bet another reason the government would rather have rentals is they usually pay twice the property taxes that homeowners do. That can amount to tens of thousands a year difference in tax revenue for each and every property on a street. Sad but true.....\nStill I have to agree with the high immigration numbers. Regardless of the party in the Canadian government, many of the officials are invested in the housing market themselves, so barring some kind of economic emergency or catastrophe, housing costs are not going to go down any time soon. I was living in Montreal and 4 kg of beef ribs cost $116. The food costs combined with the housing, guarantee that Canadians will be screwed for years to come.

International students are allowed to work part time for 20 hours/week. If we are allowed to work legally what’s the purpose of stating that the jobs should be reserved for ‘Canadians’ only. Education is a big market in Canada and Canadian government is making good amount of money from International students. International students pay 2-3 times more for education than Canadian students. All those who leave Canada will come back in 5 years. They will worship the country for its economic growth beginning with a new Clean energy sector. They're your humble mum and dad investors who worked their butts off to buy an investment property with the hopes of building wealth so they have something to give their children. You can blame Trudeau but this is happening all over the world. The problem is that central banks target a certain amount of inflation (usually 2%). However in their inflation calculations they don't include the price for housing. So they are not steering the economy on true inflation. Resulting in a decade of very low interest rates which resulted in souring housing prices.

This nation is very overrated beyond belief. I get that the nation has free health care. However, everything is insanely expensive from houses to mere groceries. Specially—in B.C.—rent crisis is an ongoing problem, causing young people to move from one AirBnB house to another. Because the government of the aforementioned province is really hapless and meek. Yes, there are not that many rental units available for young families and fresh-out-of college students. But, we will not build an ample amount of rental housing units for the poor and the young. As someone who is studying social work , the amount of policy hoops we have to jump through to be able to help people in need does not help the issue. Canada can't continue with this amount of immigration. Honestly, IMO, Canada should only be considering skilled immigrants, and importantly, immigrants who can speak either English or French articulately. My daughter had a resident doctor who was Indian, who was going to perform a procedure which included using a scalpel on her tongue (she was tongue tied, minimally). I couldn't understand a word he was saying, neither could she. He got so mad he threw the scalpel at the wall. I went and got the supervising physician, and we got the procedure done. My point here is, yes we need skilled workers, but they need to be able to communicate with the general public.\nAlso, the family reunification program needs to be overhauled. No seniors unless the sponsors can pay for them out of pocket until death; and no extra money for children who are brought over that arent the sponsors biological children.

I'm a landlord in Vancouver. I'm forced to raise rent by a huge amount because mortgage rates went up 11 times in one year, at the same time, City of Vancouver raises property taxes. These drastic increases to rent is only to break even.

How can we talk about the housing crisis and not mention the fact that provinces gutted the rent controls, allowing landlords to increase rents to whatever amount they choose. The rent control measures, which were removed by conservative provincial governments, kept rental prices within an affordable range, allowing renters who intended to buy to save enough for a down-payment on a house. That ain't Trudeau, that's the provinces.

Born and raised in toronto, I live in Las Vegas. I am able to achieve the American dream in two years with an average salary( single income) , protect myself and my family with 2nd amendment right. 30yr fixed mortgage rate at 3.0% on a brand new house what Canadians would consider a big home at 2400 sq foot home. Foods cheaper , fuel cheaper, Nike is cheaper lol and most importantly No snow. \n\nIf I carried the same amount of salary to Mississauga I would completely have the total opposite. Indians leaving India in droves due to better opportunities for them, as well, the high amount of corruption with their government at all levels. This is directly from the co-workers I work with. Canada immigration is letting far too many people who shouldn’t be allowed here. Many of my Indian friends will vouch this as well. They all left Brampton to pursue other cities across Ontario. They agree, many undesirables back in India have come to our shores, with money laundering and crime. Canada literally needs an army of people to start deporting those who have lied on their documentation, add little value to our economy or country.
