A perfect storm is brewing in Canada. Inflation, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, available automobile shortages and prices, the price of living place. It's all coming together and it could lead to a real disaster towards the end of this year (or sooner). With inflation currently at about 6%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

Canadian here with many American friends.....\nWe have frequent conversations about the fear of school shootings and the parents being concerned for their kids safety. The fact that you and your friends don't discuss it may very well be cuz it's an uncomfortable subject. The ones I've spoken with sit with me on the phone year after year and cry about having to buy the inserts for the backpacks having to tell their kids no flashy shoes cuz it'll give your location away if you move, needing to teach them how to hide to survive. \nI'm in a very large city in Canada and we have the drills here too, it's terrifying for us just having that part, I can't imagine being a parent in the states worrying about my kids surviving school day by day. And that's just the events that have 4 or more victims. \nAdd on the ongoing war on women's rights, wanting to legislate who ppl can love and marry. I did my masters here in US and have been working for past 5 yrs, in total 7 years. My company just initiated my i140 application which will take around 3 yrs to complete then the wait for GC will start for 15yrs (for Indians only). During this time we are at the employers mercy. We do get high salaries. But we are in a perpetually limbo. Its hard to find a spouse, start a family or invest in property as your future here is uncertain. \n\nThe H1B lottery system was introduced to keep the selection fair, as there are limited number of applications accepted each year. Hence it is a gamble for immigrants wanting to come here to study and work. The chance of getting H1B is almost 50/50. H1B visa is a temporary work visa, it was designed to be applicable for 3-4yrs until one gets the GC. But because of GC country backlog folks are on it for 15-20yrs.\n\nThe Greencard country limits were introduced in 2009 as the US government felt they needed diversity in the country. They were scared that US will be filled with Indians and Chinese immigrants. Hence the country caps on each country on GC. So if one is born in Nepal, Sri Lanka or Pakistan they get their GC within 1-3 yrs. Where as Indians need to wait 15-20yrs. But here is the wired part, they only consider the country of birth NOT citizenship. Ex: My friend was born in Oman and was raised in India, he is Indian and has Indian citizenship. He got his GC in 1 yr. \n\nThese H1B policies are not a priority to the US government as H1B folks do not have voting rights. They do not have any incentives to change the legacy policies. Maybe it's just because of the news, but really, the school shootings are TOP of mind for me. Like, how is that even possible, to have that many crazy people who want to murder children, and not only that, but those crazy people have access to guns? \nI don't say anything to my American cousins, as I realize that they have ties, they've married Americans, they've built a life, and there's no sense me freaking out about things that they won't change, and insulting their choices.\nBut... I was SHOCKED that even after they started having children, they still didn't move back to Canada. They can do it, they have dual citizenship! \n???\nIt's like sending your kids to school on a boat in a river full of crocodiles. People travel with different mood swings and mindsets. Also with loss, emergency, fear and sitting for a long time in discomfort, and traveling with strangers next to them like that... Adding fuel to the fire someone (a child) kicking them from the back seat is too much. Canadian here. I’ll never forget visiting Disneyworld and hearing the people sitting across from me complain they weren’t allowed to bring their guns into the park. They didn’t get why it was an issue. It was horrifying and mind blowing. It’s that part of America gun culture that makes me very sure I’d never move there. I know it’s not all Americans, but knowing an American family is out there annoyed they can’t bring weapons into a family theme park is enough.

Once i was traveling in flight ✈️ which was approx 3 hrs duration and person sitting in front of my seat turned around on his seat and put his face in front of my face few inches away and he froze . We have access to firearms in canada as well, but a very regulated background check and any sign of problems (misuse, violence, threats mental health problems that indicates self harm or harm of others) results in loss of the right to own. We have had a large uptake in mass shootings since 2000, but the total number in canadian history still sits around 70. The us has had about 5 times in the first six months of 2023 than all of canadian history.

The population in Canada is also much better educated on average than Americans, and are better people to interact with. Most of us are always happy, smiling, and enjoying life to it's fullest. We don't sit around complaining to each other all the time about how crappy their crummy existence is. Here, life is truly wonderful in every way I know!

As far as I’m aware Venezuela can be really dangerous to live in. I might do the same thing if I was born there especially as a woman or someone with children. But even men want to live. This probably would not have taken place if the US hadn't destroyed the Venezuelan economy with sanctions. Venezuela is one of the most oil rich countries in the world, sitting an estimated 1 trillion barrels of oil. I have faced such issues while traveling in economy and the thing is that the leg space is a lot low. The person sitting behind you might push your seat jist simply tell the air hostess about the issue. Everytime I faced such a issue I told them and never had a problem. If you can't adjust then fly in a private jet or business class if you can't afford then shut the heck up.
