Due to the open US/Mexico border and flooding of illegal migrants, the illegal migrants hurt those who've gone through the system legally and have essentially cut in line. If you flood the economy with migrants (both legal and illegal), most who are considered low skill, due to the aforementioned border crisis, it'll drive the wages of Americans down to unlivable levels and cause those who are in the immigration system to continuously be in the perpetual waiting system. By failure to mention this big topic issue, you have done a disservice to this video and have missed key points, rendering this video as incomplete and false. H-1B visas are used by corporations to undercut American wages. Why hire an American with the same qualifications when you can use the visa to hire an immigrant for cheaper? Businesses don't have a shortage of skilled workers, they just don't want to pay a fair wage and would rather pay an immigrant less and get away with it because the immigrants are desperate. Universities accross the country are filled with American born students but why do we have or need the H-1B visa?

One slight concern is that skilled wages are already lower in Canada and venture capital is far less accessible so it's harder to get the full benefit of these skilled workers.\n\nIt will be interesting to see how this plays out in terms of bifurcation of wealth in Canada as housing prices will only continue to soar but mass skilled immigration should keep wages relatively steady. ?

I think this was a great video. I’m glad you mentioned the difference in wages because what that really indicates is that Canada doesn’t suffer from a shortage of skilled labour if anything we have the opposite: a glut. What we need is more business investment in our economy but the federal government seems completely uninterested in that topic. Well at least for the immigrants that do come here once they get their citizenship it becomes much easier to work in the states under NAFTA so I guess we’re kinda a back door.

The America system is so broken and we are ceding our dominance to others with this outdated system. We must eliminate the green card caps, clear the citizenship backlog, and start welcoming in many millions of skilled immigrants every year.

Brain drain? a 2019 report stated that 34,838 Canadians left Canada for the US when in that same year 81,400 highly skilled Immigrants came to Canada. The number of highly skilled immigrants coming in to Canada has been steadily increasing. While the number of people leaving Canada for the\nUS has been steadily decreasing to say that all of Canada's talented people are going to the US is just not true.

the truth is the very highest skilled workers get fast tracked into the US. It can afford the more restrictive immigration policy because it's a much more desirable place to get into, especially for the best of best.

The Canadian immigration system is fair and easy to understand. Unfortunately Canadian employers always ask for Canadian experience. In no other country was I ever asked this. After immigrating to Canada and failing for many years I finally moved to the US where I have been far more successful and happier. Just returned from a trip to Toronto where I have many good friends. The traffic is a nightmare and the housing is unaffordable. Canada is wasting all these highly skilled immigrants. They need to provide housing and effective labor force integration. They need to recognize foreign qualification and cut the insufferable red tape. It was an issue when I was part of an IEP (Internationally Educated Professionals) conference over 18 years ago and I see it has not changed. Given a free choice most immigrants would chose the United States. Why? Because despite all the craziness, Americans only care if you can do the job. And they are very welcoming. There is a positive energy that anything is possible. And I am now a very proud American. I will do anything for this country. Canada is a great country but it is wasting their new immigrants.

The US immigration system is broken indeed. It allows poor, old, and non-English speaking relatives/aged parents of a US citizen to get green cards, but not the young, US-educated, and skilled foreign students. What the US should do immediately is to re-allocate green cards from family-based groups to employment-based ones!

The vast majority of these immigrants are not high skilled labour. People need to realise that the only reason Canada is doing this is because its birth rate is so low, they’ve said it many times. They are literally replacing their population and Canadian culture is dying along with it. Canada will be known more and more for being America’s hat if this continues and it will no longer survive as country. All at the cost of actual Canadians. The same thing is sadly happening in Australia. Oh yeah, not to mention 90% of these immigrants are settling in like 5 urban areas. You can tell this is a recipe for disaster.

For someone in the high tech industry like me, it's the Great North American Paradox of Canada-vs-USA. Canada needs immigrants and welcomes immigrants but has no high volume of high tech jobs for the highly skilled immigrants. The USA has the biggest volume of high tech jobs for highly skilled immigrants but has a broken immigration system where the highly skilled immigrants are living in a limbo.

The obvious connection not being made here is when you let in a high amount of skilled labour without consideration for the size of the industry you put downward pressure on the average income of that industry. There is more thought out into the American system. Easy isn’t necessarily better. And don’t get me started on the price of housing. It’s actually outright ridiculous. But again there’s not much though in the system. Everyone wants to live in Toronto. Upward pressure on the price of homes. Many immigrants I meet actually want to leave.

You forgot to mention that those High Skill Migrants that go to Canada LEAVE CANADA and go to the USA afterwards anyway. While we still take in a lot of unqualify migrants that should be sent to the outer region instead come to the cities and cause more problems for Canadians citizens already here because of the Federal government while leaving cities like Toronto to handle the horrible Housing and homeless crisis. A little balance here please. Immigration is not utopia. 80-90% of H1-B visas in the US go to consulting companies that displace American labor with cheaper overseas labor that misrepresents their skills when applying (the fraud you mentioned). Less than 10% of H1-B visas actually go to people hired from abroad for their existing talent by places like Google or Facebook. And please also mention the percentage of income that immigrants from places like India actually send back to India instead of into the local economy, because it's the majority of their income, even in high cost of living cities. \n\nNo utopia.

I have mixed feelings about this video. This video does a good job outlining the immigration process but it does not highlight any of the negative consequences of immigration that Canada is experiencing. One of the main reasons why cost of living is so high in Toronto and Vancouver is precisely because we have so many immigrants coming in without enough housing supply. This is by design because politicians and the upper class have a vested interest in keeping real estate prices high because so much of their net worth is tied up in the housing market.\n\nAnother negative is that employers hire immigrants working low skilled jobs and pay them less than Canadians because the immigrants are willing to be taken advantage of since they're just happy to have a job in Canada which pays better than their country. \n\nAnother myth that gets repeated is that Canadian takes immigrants out of compassion and unfortunately a lot of Canadians believe this. It was never about compassion, it's about bringing more people to 1) pay taxes to support our social welfare as Canadian birth rates decline and boomers retire, 2) keep housing costs high and 3) pay immigrants lower wages for the same work because immigrants are fine being exploited since they have a job in a first world country.\n\nAnother problem is the cultural shift. In the most immigrant-dense regions you'll find that many immigrants themselves surprisingly don't want more immigrants coming to Canada because they see these negative consequences. The people who are most pro-immigration have no problem cramming 8+ people in a basement and exploiting their labour because they make enough money to live in communities that immigrants can't afford, and so they don't have to deal with the cultural shift that's taking place. This is NOT the fault of immigrants, but rather the politicians who put economic growth over quality of life. Over HALF the people in the GTA weren't born in Canada, so they didn't go through our school system and have no connection to our culture. Canada is unfortunately going to become very racist over the next 10-20 years as Canadians start feeling like outsiders in their own country. It's somehow considered racists to criticize the effect of multiculturalism on social unity, yet the cultures we accept in Canada only became distinct cultures because of monoculturalism.

I can’t thank you enough. No one here understands nor wants to acknowledge the struggle or repercussions. And I also understand that skilled immigrant problems doesn’t matter to any citizen. As a Chinese born person that went through the whole H1B waiting list (one of the worst even) shabang I actually truly disagree that America’s H1 system is broken. It does weed off quite some less competitive candidates so having the money to go to a top school wouldn’t automatically buy you citizenship. If anything, policies regarding family sponsored immigration and low skilled immigrant labor are the ones needs to be rehauled.

Canada wants permanent immigrants, not temporary workers, and makes it harder to hire foreign workers by requiring companies to apply for LMIA that takes months to be approved, if approved. The US (and most other countries) wants the opposite, and as soon as you are no longer necessary they kick you out. This gives visa holders a disadvantage related to other workers in the same industry since they are tied to an employer and can't just quit. In fact, they are at a mercy of the employer and are likely to work harder for a lower salary. Yeah, their average pay is higher than the country average, but it is still lower than other workers with the same skills.

Some things to factor in - 1). American immigrants become citizens. This isn't true for almost any of these other countries. 2). American immigrants are disproportionately low skill. This is true in plenty of these countries. 3). American immigrants disproportionately come from the same cultural sphere, which makes their size more intimidating. 4). A second generation immigrant is not considered an immigrant. These countries just began allowing mass immigration. Americans have been allowing mass immigration all of our history. Including second generation immigrants, you have an immigrant population closer to 35% of the US population, true or false? And more than half of them have the right to vote, to fundamentally alter our nation. \nThere's also no way Americans believe that more than half of the country are immigrants. Almost all immigrants in the US live in a few specific regions. Most Americans see very few immigrants throughout the year. Perhaps, it was offset by the number of Americans surveyed who do live in those specific regions. Surveys tend to prioritize diversity and weigh the opinions of particular groups differently. If they tended to call urban area codes more often, and weighed the votes in proportion to size of the population that each group makes up, then the people saying 50% in say New York or Washington state, which represent many different groups will offset the people saying 5% in Kansas, which are all getting grouped into the older, Whiter cohorts. Most Americans under 18 are non-White. \nOnly 15% of Americans under 18 should be non-White, if America were an ethnically stable nation. Thus, 38% of Americans are recent (post 1970s) immigrants.

One thing I would like to note is that Canada is not welcoming in only highly skilled workers. If you can work at a Tim Horton's you qualify. This has lead to a flood of new workers who HAVE to have a job in order to stay at a time where the existing labour pool is refusing work due to pay lagging far behind inflation for two decades. Those salaries discrepancies you listed are not exclusive to the tech sector, they are economy wide. Often you'll here talk of a labour shortage in Canada, but ask for the number of applicants to jobs and you quickly find out the reason no one accepted is because the full-time job offered requires a part-time job to barely make ends meet. \n\nAnother factor is that housing happens to be the bread and butter of ~40% of our MP's. Hell our Minister of Housing himself owns properties that have appreciated massively due to the lack of supply and high demand. He then goes on national TV and says high immigration will solve the housing crisis despite Canada already having over 4% of our entire labour force already in the construction industries (America is a little over 3%) and the men and women who build our houses being unable to afford the homes they build ($22.07/hr CAD average or ~$16.66 USD. compared to $22.29/hr USD). 14% of our national GDP is housing. 14% of our entire economy is just money changing hands internally with nothing of value made. \n\nThen you have the combo of landlords benefiting from the immigration programs who try and evict the tenants on their properties to replace them with immigrant labour. They then take the cost of rent right out of their salaries. The workers can't quit their jobs because if they don't have a job they are at risk of being deported and also loosing their homes so they end up shacking 8 to an apartment to try and make ends meet. This becomes the standard the rest of the economy has to meet. \n\nIt is a rare sight to see someone who is anti-immigrant in Canada, but the majority of people here understand that immigration is a problem the way it is currently run. You have people who come here hoping for a new life being forced to sleep outside under bridges because while they may have a job they don't have a home and the shelters are already 200% capacity. Tent cities are the norm in any major urban centre now. There are crack dens in Toronto that are the same price as Castles in the UK. And this problem is only going to get worse.

About 25 years ago I would have been happy to move to the U.S. It looked my current job was about to end, and I had a skill set that matched what a lot of employers in the U.S. were looking for. Unfortunately U.S. immigration laws made that extremely difficult. Now I'm retired, and I would still like to move to the U.S., except for the fact that I would have no health insurance down there, and health care costs in the U.S. are the highest in the world. It's true that you do need a gun down there though, and you'd better be trained in how to use it.

Employers dont hire people without experience because of Justin Trudeau and his dam skilled immigration crap. Now there is too much skilled people looking for the same jobs. I went to a local job fair in a small building and it was overloaded with immigrants. There was only 7 employers hiring and in a room about the size of a classroom for 30 students. Yet there was 500 immigrants. You couldn't walk without pushing people. Even the hallways and the outside parking lot was crowded.... This is ridiculously way too much! We not to put a stop to the immigration and start making people go back to wherever they came from! And Justin Trudeau needs to be put in jail! I'm living in Hong Kong, with bno passport. I can't understand why so a lot of homeless in the street in Canada. In Hong Kong, the 'homeless' almost coming from China for one day begging and then return to China. The local homeless are almost the mental illness. I would add that because of the lack of investment in businesses and an open immigration policy while over-prioritizing Canadian only experience there is a huge underemployment problem especially amongst highly skilled and experienced immigrants who would mainly wait to get the Canadian passport and move down south to the US where evaluations of international experience is more objective. Lots of low to medium skilled jobs. Dear Canada, I say this as an immigrant, if you don’t have enough high skilled jobs don’t open your borders or make it clear you want low skilled immigrants. That said, Canada is great country with minimal crime and is fairly equal. Problem is, it’s hard to get out of the rat race here.

I'm a Canadian citizen I came legally under Federal Skilled worker pathway. I had cancer and recently lost my eyesight due to slip and fall. I sponsored my nephew 2021 as I am alone in Canada. But as a taxpayer, it hurts ?why does it take too long for immigration to consider its own citizens. My nephew had his medicals in August 2022 and nothing from immigration up to now. They prioritize Ukraine and Syria over taxpayers citizens. Too unorganized and fake. Pretending to help people at war and calamities from other countries neglecting its own people who contribute to economy.?

It’s not fair for people who are immigrating under skilled worker track. It takes months or years to get all the required qualifications, paperworks and verifications to get to Canada. Some people will just need to walk in.

Jobs for teenagers, entry level workers, part time jobseekers like for students, people needing extra income cause it’s so expensive in CA, NY, Austin, TX, Chicago or SF living off work entry-level service jobs. Technology has created a shortage or labor gap between unskilled jobs. Jobs that Americans need while pursuing training or technical degrees for the new skilled jobs. \n\nImmigrants do not need to fit the stereotypes of working in the service industry or as farm workers. American citizens can fill these labor positions quite easily. No, immigrants, work visa or not, do not work any harder, smarter, slower or faster than anyone else wanting to work. If someone is motivated to work an unskilled labor job then they will be just as effective as the next person. The HR for these companies definitely virtue signal and satisfy diversity quotas every time they hire someone due to their work status or ethnicity. Everyone and anyone can be replaced and so the question is, who do you, as an employer, want to replace the job vacancy with? Gonna hire cause they are a good fit or because your helping some politicians cause? Gonna grant asylum cause their lives are in danger from a government firing squad or because Biden/Harris will pat you on the back? \n\nThere is reason to illegally enter this country and it is disrespectful, disgraceful, dishonorable, dishonest and disheartening to the ones who are here legally by going through the process like everyone else paying time and money. Where do people get off demanding to be let into a country? Every single country in the world has immigration rules. They are their for a reason. People need background checks, a skill set that is needed, and a way to support themselves once here. We have tried bringing relatives legally just on a tourist visa and they were denied. Even after we paid the application fee, showed bank accounts, etc. so anyone who just thinks they have the right to come here better think again. That’s just the way it is until reform. Has anyone else noticed that a majority of crimes in Canada over the last couple of years , have been committed by people who have unpronounceable names , and darker complexions. Where are these millions of new immigrants going to work? Since the election of Liberals, Canada has had the slowest growing economy in the industrialized world! The world expects Canada's lacklustre performance to continure for the next 20 years. So are these new immigrants coming with suitcases full of money to invest in new companies? Are the skilled tradesman coming from developed nations with similar building codes and material or from countries that build houses without any codes or inspection? Do the Medical Doctors receive the same education as 1st world doctors or are they like doctors in most developing and 3rd world countries where they enter medical school straight from Grade 11 and graduate 4-5 years later with a medical degree and their medical experience is all with 3rd world diseases? OR what is more likely is that these new immigrants will have to go back to school (paid for by Canadian taxpayers) to bring their education and skills to the minimum level of Canadians? It will take the average new immigrant 6-10 years before they are making a net positive contribution to the Canadian economy. This would be affordable if our economy was outpacing other industrialised nations OR if we had fewer immigrants but this is a strategy for bankruptcy. My prediction is that the Canadian dollar will be $0.60 USD within 5 years or less. My recommendation is start moving your savings and retirement funds to the USA.

Immigrated to Canada many years ago as skill worker in the engineering field, and there were no opportunities in that country, Canada just needed laborers to fill out factories and people to do the jobs that the Canadian born did not want to do. I ended up working in my field in the USA, and salaries and opportunities are much better in this country. Americans are very practical, they just want someone with the right knowledge. When applying for jobs in Canada, employers were very obsessed with Canadian education and experience, but in my opinion, that was an intentional way to block immigrants. In the USA I was never asked for American education or experience, the interviews were very straightforward, very technical, they just wanted to verify technical knowledge. In conclusion, if looking for professional opportunities, the USA is much better than Canada, but legal immigration as a professional to the USA is extremely difficult.

It is high time Canada should put up electric fences on its borders, easy entry for criminals, terrorists, ...the government can not even feed, house, educate and provide employment to their own Homeless people, why accept Non Canadians. Well educated and skilled immigration applicants find it too diificult to legally migrate to Canada but ???? Assylum seekers too easy to enter Canada!!! Government increase taxes to support all these refugees and assylum seekers free of charge while Canadians can not cope with inflation..what an irony...

Canada should have the same tests done for skilled immigrants to these illegal immigrants who by pass all.tests others have to pass very unfair
