Just wanna present some of my views on this topic, as a indian living in Canada, a lot of points in this discussion are pretty valid. Although, the hate is also in my opinion a little misdirected.\n\nInternational students pay three, maybe even five times as much as domestic students in terms of tuition fees, and while I 100% agree that not everybody even deserves to stay here, a major portion of fault is on government. If you want to make an argument, that government or the country in general never promise the residency status in Canada, then regulate the tuition fees, make it manageable for everyone.\n\nIf you don't want to do that, fair enough, then provide opportunities, there 100% are bad apples in the population, I will not deny that! But you called them, you took the responsibility, you promised the opportunities and students paid for it. Now you hate us for that, either build the bridge both ways or don't hate.\n\nI am genuinely more frustrated with the system rather than immigrants, it is becoming a widespread trend to hate immigrants but I believe the government is just as much at a fault. As someone who was born in Canada and left, I wanted to know about some current sentiment, especially by younger people. I think you had some interesting information. I'm actually sad to hear that crime and homelessness has gotten even worse, especially in places like you mentioned, DTES. One thing I want to share with you about the housing issue. Canada acts like a Federation. Meaning that a lot of decision making is delegated to the provincial and municipal level. Yes, Canada has goals for immigration. That's a super valid goal because every developed country is going through declining birth rates. Canada wants to lessen the damage that will be felt by so many other countries like Italy, Germany, China, Japan, etc. The issue with this federated government is like you said, a disconnect between goals and readiness. However, I really feel this will never be accomplishable because of all the lobbying that occurs at the municipal level that the Federal and even Provincial level government cannot control. Yes, there may be shortages in labour to do development, but even then, I really think that lobbying and corruption is keeping adequate supply from being built. From the homeowners and the perspective of the wealthy property owners, they want to keep the valuation of housing high by keeping supply low. Why else is the municipal government keeping such archaic zoning laws? From what I could find, there has been some talk about changing this (https://bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-to-table-housing-law-targeting-outdated-zoning-rules-1.6627260) but I struggle to see anything really being done. That's probably because of lobbying. The immigration laws set by the government had too many loopholes and flaws ultimately. I don't think we are getting enough productive immigrants. Actually, the opposite seems to occur a lot. The wealthy from the countries I mentioned are abusing the immigration policies in Canada to transfer and preserve their wealth in Canada. I think it has hid in plain sight for a long time, and people have started talked about it in the last 5-10 years because of the struggles of housing affordability from the middle class. What about the immigrants that really want to start a life in Canada and find opportunities like you said? The housing is too expensive for them to do that. And the nail in the coffin for housing, ZONING LAWS! Look into the restrictions put onto those wanting to build houses, towns, cities. It's insane, and makes it nearly impossible to build ANYTHING but single-family suburbs in the middle of nowhere. No work/industry nearby, nothing accessible without a car. The most beautiful places in Canada, and the most enriching to live in (Old Toronto and Montreal for example as well as countless small towns) could NEVER be recreated. Although, Old Toronto is actively being destroyed because of new zoning laws. In Europe, new developments are built for less money, yet Canadian ones are cheaper with houses practically being made out of cardboard. Europe also invests in cities with reliable public transit and are much safer to walk and cycle in without huge roads and highways everywhere. This allows for much denser housing and affordable communities. Canada is being eaten by Capitalism and pretending to be a Socialist government, the worst of both worlds.

People living in Canada and commenting that it is true and they are baffled with this whole situations, when exactly you are coming back to India? People will tell you that they want to come back but no one will. It is because those who actually left for Canada in order to have a better lifestyle are still having a better lifestyle in Canada and they will never return back (atleast in the near future). Canada is the most beautiful country in the world that’s its usp , again we Indians can learn something from Canada is the way they preserved their nature that is remarkable that gives them good oxygen rich air , water and hygiene that Indian people are far away or never witnessed in their life. We don’t have any greenery in our country we really need to work on improving that but neither the people nor the government is interested in making good changes or even have such idea in head ! Along with that Canada has strong tax system you really get tax return as well as strong labour protection act that guards its resident from exploitation and employees can sue the employer if exploitation is provable on table with facts. India doesn’t have any strong labour protection body this results even in corporate jobs you have to work more than 8 hours and no OT , plus Canada has EI (employment insurance) so that means is , if you loose your job for any reason you will get government assistance to help to pay your bills till you find your next job. Plus disability benefits , food banks , freedom to live your life the way you want, you can eat what you want, religion based stupidity doesn’t exist in that country. So yes it’s true I don’t like the Canadian PM either but overall Canada is really good country and we Indians can learn atleast some good things they carry and adapt to our country and make India bit better place to live. The moment some says truth we Indians start bashing and may say go to Canada but we don’t realize our own problems and don’t wanna work.

As a fairly liberal Canadian, immigration is the only subject that makes me move to the center-right politically. We don't have the ressources to feed, house and care for 1.5 million new people every year, much less the Canadians already here. Justin Trudeau has been hurting the country with his open door migration policy because he's too scared to lose his brownie points from the far left. Any other politician is too scared to say anything negative and concrete on immigration because it's considered political suicide, but the tide is changing with Canadians. We don't want anymore would be asylum seekers or foreign students working and overstaying their visas because WE CAN'T EVEN TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES ANYMORE. Yes, our birth rates are too low and we need some immigration to help close the population decline gap that will eventually come, but it can't be a free for all. We can barely afford rent, groceries, healthcare, etc. now and I fear it will only get worse in the coming years. At this point, as an early 30 something year old, I will never own a home or even be able to move without dishing out 60-80% of my income for rent. None of this is viable long term, we're reaching the point of criticality
