Wait so why is Trump imposing tariffs on Canada? I honestly didn’t know this

Could Canada Win a Trade War?\n Trump has waged Economic War on Canada in order to bring us to our knees so that we will eventually capitulate to become the 51st state.\n\n Had he come in a nice way, as a friend verses a foe, he would have had a lot more interest, especially from Alberta. \n\n Now that we are here, the question has to be asked, can we actually win a trade war that has probably been extensively war-gamed by the U.S.?\n\n Our politicians want us to go toe to toe with a 900 lb gorilla. The U.S. economy is at least 10 times our size and are less dependent on our trade than we are. We may give them a black eye but they could rip our arms and legs off. \n\n Retaliatory tariffs play into their hands. It’s the perfect excuse to increase the tax to 50 or 100%. So will we do the same? This would devastate us, achieving their goals.\n\n Canadians are already fighting back without the government making things worse. People are boycotting U.S. goods en masse and cancelling travel plans, etc. and this is already having a strong effect.\n\n Some say turn off the electricity and oil, but who will pay price? It will be the businesses and employees, not the politicians who are now trying to act tough. If we want this to turn into a real kinetic war, then turning off the taps may do it. \n\n We have seen countless times where politicians tell us what we want to hear, making us think they are heading is a certain direction, only to find they do the exact opposite. This proves you can not believe what career politicians say and have to go by what they do, or don’t do, instead. Yet now, they confidently declare that Canada will never become the 51st state. This should raise eyebrows. \n\n Almost all of the MPs and Premiers are unanimous in entering into a trade war we can not win. After tariffs go ballistic, our dollar drops to .35 cents, and we get utterly crushed, I can see them say, “in order to save what’s left of our economy and society we must reluctantly join the U.S. or face certain destruction”. \n\n Not only would the decades old goal of a North American Union be accomplished, but we would take a large step towards the video statement that the World Economic Forum - WEF posted on their website. “By 2030, you will own nothing and be happy”. \n\n The WEF is working with the UN to achieve their Agenda 2030 goals and is what Pierre Poilievre and the “Conservatives” signed Canada onto Sept. 27, 2015. canada exports 75+% of its overall products into the united states, it only imports 50ish% overall products from the united states of america. This is why the tariffs are in place. Agree or disagree, this is why trump is doing what hes doing. Our country is in shambles and we need our allies to pump money into our economy or else it will only get worse in our country. And both canada and mexico are outraged by the simple way trump is approaching this.

Picking a trade war with Canada, Mexico, China and major economics is a very bad idea. It will not bring anybody to the negotiation table to get a better deal. It will drive them away from US partnership and they form alliances, new trade routes and partnerships, de-dollarization, etc. Just think why does a country needs USD when they cannot trade with US. BRICS have overtaken G7 in the overall GDP. So, In the end, US will be left alone with limited trading partners. US people will need to pay for tax + tariffs which will put them in a downward spiral.

Whom did these dumb and dumber punish when they introduces the 25% tariff? The customers, in both the USA and Canada. The seniors on fixed minimum income that we cannot effort buying fresh food coming from the USA.

My question is why retaliate at all? If tariffs are paid for by the country that imposes them then just let America pay the higher prices and keep imports in Canada at a lower cost. What am I missing?

I’ve been operating an import export business for 25 years throughout the entire time It has always been more expensive to clear goods from Canada into the USA than the other way around. Meaning there was already a trade barrier in effect to Canada’s detriment. This is just insult to injury. I wish the White House looked at the facts on the ground rather than fantasy. These tariffs are unnecessary.

All Canada had to do was secure their border, implement harsher penalties on drug traffickers, and reduce the tariffs they already impose on the US. Dont let them play victim

I support the USA. The tariffs will hurt Canada and Mexico far more than the USA. In 2023 - 76% of Canada's exports were shipped to the US. That is 19% of their total GDP. Mexico exported 78% of its exports to the US, which is 37% of its GDP. US exports to Canada & Mexico combined were only 2.7%. Both countries will need to find other buyers or capitulate. No wonder Trudeau is screaming like a stray dog hit by a rock.

As a businessman, Trump was using Fentanyl crisis as a lame excuse. No matter how much fentanyl is controlled across borders he was still guaranteed in imposing the 25% trade tariff. \nCanada govt invested so much into the border security recently and visited multiple times in Washington to discuss this 25% trade tariff but all of them forgot that Trump is a very aggressive and stubborn when it comes to money!\n\nI am glad Trump has made Canada and even Trudeau bold and self dependent now!

While we understand these tariffs will impact all consumers, as Americans, we acknowledge that Canada and Mexico's responses are a direct result of policy decisions beyond their control. Born and raised living in Ontario Canada and I applaud Trump Canada has had a 35 to 40% tariff on American goods. Only difference is we call a duty tax? It’s about time America stuck it back to us.
