I choose at this time to not apply for my citizenship as i dont want to have to apply to my own country of birth to enter again should i need to visit relatives there. We have the same issue in the United Kingdom and its far harder to deal with there, and there is an Ocean surrounding it. This woman is right. We need people who are willing to sacrifice their time and their old citizenship to become Americans. She sacrificed a great deal to become a true American citizen. I do not want to be a citizen of another country although I have spent time as a guest worker LEGALLYin other countries. I was not allowed to take jobs in those countries (Japan and Germany) that native workers had the right to take. I was not given benefits or a right to vote. I had a passport which I was required to carry at all times because as a foreign worker I could be stopped and questioned about my legal status. My passport showed my working status in country with the appropriate stamp. I accepted these restrictions as part of my working conditions. I wanted to keep my own citizenship as an American although I could have worked to obtain the fluency level required and the citizenship understanding of law and legal procedures to become a citizen. It would have taken time and waiting for an application to clear. That is what it would have required but I wanted to be an American. I did not renounce my citizenship lightly…nor should anyone without work and thoughtful consideration of what it is to BE a member of that country.

I would deport a lot of people if I was U.S. president, but deporting Dreamers is a bad idea. There should be a bipartisan compromise: strict immigration enforcement combined with a path to citizenship for Dreamers (which is something that was unsuccessfully negotiated during Trump's first term). I’m a Canadian citizen. I married a Jewish African woman. And helped her get her citizenship after we got married here in Canada.
