My mom was unemployed for three years when we came to Canada, despite having a computer science degree. Now she's in the top one percent of earners. When you're a first generation immigrant you have to overcome racism, and it takes time.

The amount of delivery / courier / truck drivers that, when they arrive at my workplace, can't (or won't) speak English is unreal. When no one speaks their language they get on the phone and put someone who can on speaker. Eats up a lot of extra time especially when they're not even at the correct address, yet somehow are rude and get angry insisting they are. Healthcare is so bad that I have stories of surgery done wrong and person almost died. Colossal level of mis-management is going on in this country. I am professional and at executive level in corporation, still half the time in a year I struggle to keep up with expenses. I am re-considering my decision to stay in this country. This just looks to me like somebody making more of something than it is. I have no idea where the statistics come from but I cannot believe that there are so many more Indians coming in than any other immigrants from all over the world. Where I live in Canada the Tim Hortons are full of Filipinos, as are the old folks homes and so many other health services taken by Filipinos, which is very good and they are solid people. Most of the people commenting on Canada can't even imagine the quality of life. Even if you're Ambani, you'll still have to deal with pollution and dirt all over the place. Drugs and homelessness has increased but I've been settled here since the past two years and have had a considerable amount of work life balance and financial stability compared to back home. I've been threatened by immigrants four times since moving back to my home city of Saskatoon. I've had my actual safety threatened by these people they're letting in and I can't say anything without being called racist. We don't want this many immigrants!!!

We're not dealing with a surge in balanced immigration drawing from a balanced global demographic. That's nearly universally agreeable amongst Canadians and it likely will never change because Canadian itself is not an ethnic identity but an identity built around shared values. We are, in real time and in nearly every city across the country, experiencing solely a surge in Punjabi immigration. They tend to congregate into tight communities, stack houses with up to 10-15 people in hardly adequate living conditions, and then disproportionately and even sometimes exclusively hire or provide tenantship to people based on ethnicity. This recent surge of immigration has been different. Everyone can feel it. I prefer when the boundaries between groups to associate and co-operate are as open and mutually beneficial as possible. most newcomers to any country struggle especially since most are not bringing in wads of cash to start a business but literally scraping in using life savings just to get here - however once here with residential status a national health care and level of income security for unemployment benefits is an added bonus which you won't get in every country regardless of residency status but refugees and others come in with no money at all as well as problems in some cases with language barriers, but as bad as everyone thinks it is the grass is not greener on the other side just because you're paying lower taxes but privatising infrastructure only makes things more expensive even when you're not taxed.... and Canada is a huge country with very limited number of tax payers such a small market would double costs for private business too - and just cos things may be cheaper you may find you don't fit as well as you thought..... and also the more you move the less time you have to settle and grow into the space you find yourself now....I've lived in 3 very different countries so I understand how difficult it is.... and how some places regardless of cost just fit better than others.... I've been living in Canada for the last 10 years ( came here as an international student), and now applying for my permanent residency. Went through high school, post secondary, and now working a full-time job in my field of study. I would say it's long overdue for Canada to scale down on its immigration policies (yes, I've had this thought even when I was a student so anyone who thinks I switched teams can shut up). There are simply not enough houses to accommodate Canadian, let alone immigrants. A lot of them only work minimum wage jobs which neither help the country with shortages in other fields nor their careers in the long term, and overall it gives immigrants a bad rap in the eyes of Canadian citizen. The recent changes in immigration imo is a good first step in the right direction.\n\nEdit: Also I'd like to add that if you're leaving your own home country to join another for a better life, it's your responsibility to adapt and contribute to their society, not the other way around. If you can't do that, stay in your home country.

I don't know.... I live in Montreal and I don't see recent newcomers as poor victims (I'm talking about most immigrants applying for refugee status) . \nWhy? \n1. In order to reach North America , one has to either cross the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean or cross huge chunks of land from Central or South America .... and that's really expensive. In Europe, since the coast of Africa is very close to Europe's , boats full of destitute and desperate people might be the norm. Not in North America. \n2. most of those guys arrive in North America looking for work \n3. most newcomers do possess smart phones and they know how to use them. They have their own network of friends and they're always on the lookout for good opportunities. \n4. most newcomers are very, very mobile. If they're having trouble finding work in Montreal and they need truck drivers somewhere else.... they'll go there . A new hospital needs aid personnel? They'll be there ready for hard work. \nThe positives ? They're probably working , making money and paying taxes. \nThe negative side? They're for the most part economic immigrants. No, nobody promised them anything; that’s just a big lie. They’re a hundred times smarter than you think and know exactly what’s going on. Now, they’re just putting all the blame on immigration agents. They all understand what they’re getting into and what they’ve signed up for. Highly skilled immigrants from India are always welcome anywhere, like in the US where they have added tlmutiple times to the economy. Canada, unfortunately, is importing from Punjab ,low skilled labour that eats into Candian quality of life. These youth from Punjab can't integrate and is a burden to the economy, as they rake up zero value adding jobs. Truck driving and RE realtor don't add any value to the economy. Came as a refugee 16 years ago it was a dream come true but 16 years later and 3 childern all born here in Toronto.... They came under terms of a limited stay. Once their time's up, it's time to go back home. If they want to stay, there are already channels to do that process like many of us did. You don't get to skip the line just because you're already here. If they refuse to follow the right channels and insist in breaking the rules, why on earth should we even consider their demands?

Our housing crisis is caused by the governments of Canada\n 1st they started obstructing the building of new houses with these massive years long processes to get the permits\n Some cases 5 to7 years\n The development permit to build a development cost more than it does to build the buildings.\n At the same time they have been bringing in a million people a year.\nWhile this government and all of the other governments for the last 40 years have obstructed industry from getting permits to build anything.\n The middle class is all but gone in Canada and no sign of it to return because you can't do anything you're not allowed to do anything.\nCanada historically had no real homeless population and had the strongest middle class today we have near 500,000 homeless.\nOr you could say about 3% of the population.

I would never move to the US. Not on your life. Your statement that one can get healthcare for several hundred a month is ludicrous. Most Canadians don't have to pay anything, except their taxes, which are not higher than most Americans pay. And the huge costs of healthcare pop up at the worst time, when you're really sick. But that isn't the only reason. I loathe American politics. I loathe the American tendency to brag about how great they are. We Candians are not the greatest country on Earth. We can take advice from other countries. Americans tend to go on bragging and insisting their way is best long after they've been proven to be wrong.

Yes, please stop moving to our over saturated economy. Canadas economy is not ready to sustain such a large number of immigrants. When you have an extra 451,000 people flooding in per year that require jobs in a very sparsely populated country you’re going to run into housing and job shortages, which increase demands, increasing prices and therefore increasing homeless because people can’t afford living and they can’t get a job because a requirement for being an immigrant is full time employment.
