Emergency situations will see the patient receiving care right away

We have pondered moving to the US but it always scares me thinking of all the service safety nets behind. I don't know how many Americans know this, but basically at birth you are assigned a health card which you keep for the rest of your life. Anytime you go to the doctor they ask for that and it has all your info on it (family doctors, your address, etc) and that's all you do. See the doctor and then leave. Private/work health insurance is more for prescription, dentists,massage, therapy, physio, eye, ambulance rides,etc. \nBut childbirth, ER visits, doctors visits all covered by that card...which is funded by our are taxes. We are taxed to hell and back on the daily but it's just so normal you don't think differently of it. We do have a shortage of Dr's though. An ER wait can be upwards of 2-4 hours and your family doctor can take weeks to get an appointment with so you usually have to go to a hospital or walk in if it's urgent.\nAlso, guns. Guns guns everwhere ? I saw a sign when I was walking into Walmart in Florida saying to not bring guns inside and I just couldn't believe that was a thing that had to be said. In Canada, guns are for hunting and going to the range and that's the only time they're allowed out of their safe. Obviously you have people who have stolen and smuggled guns and that's how you get gun crimes (you need a special card to buy guns and ammo, that you get after passing a gun safety course and *most* gun crimes are not committed by people who hold those cards). I appreciate the fact that you don't have so many restrictions on the types of guns you can get but man, I never felt so rattled just walking around after seeing that sign

THE BIRD FEEDER ANALOGY \n \nI bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with birdseed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it was, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. \n \nBut then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop! It was everywhere, on the patio tile, the chairs, the table…everywhere! \n \nThen some of the birds turned mean. They would dive-bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. The other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. \n \nAfter a while, I could not even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio. \n \nSoon, the backyard was back to like it used to be…quiet, serene, and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. \n \nNow let us see here… \n \nOur government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. \n \nThen the illegals came by the tens and hundreds of thousands, millions. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child’s 2nd grade class is behind other schools because half the class doesn’t speak English. Illegals squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. When asked why they breed like cockroaches, the reply is that it is a cultural thing. \n \nIt's long overdue for the US government to take down the bird feeder. Otherwise, we will continue cleaning up the poop!

Neoliberal policies and relationships have ruined many a city round the world. Privatization is the panacea for everything and govt has a cozy delationship with the corporate sector. That means the citizen - or immigrant - is no longer a priority. Developers, investment firms, corporations wanting high profits at expense of employees and cities; of global rich looking to buy housing as investment, and of course, criminals. They all have priority in Toronto. So laws about real estate development are weak, as well as for rental controls or building affordable housing - govt for years has been ridding itself of controlled housing. Local govt supports @5-10% of local population, so gentrification but no help for those pushed out. From there high prices in housing and rentals and food and transit...Difficult to transition if you are not well off. But that isn't what we see with our eyes. \nAfter 60 yrs downtown we moved to subburbs. No more condo towers, no more insane traffic, no more overcrowded transit and less longer waits. There are problems of course. For examples, ronically, where i live is less traffic but you need your car for most shopping.

I've lived in Toronto for almost 20 years, and I can't wait to get out. The plan is to move somewhere else in the spring, just figuring out where. Toronto now breaks my heart-- you see people seriously struggling everywhere, and it's hard to see it in contrast with the opulent wealth that much of the city has. We're lucky to be in a rent-controlled apartment and we've been here for over a decade, and there's no way we'd find anything even remotely similar here now (the apartment we live in would go up at least $1000 if we leave). The safety is also an issue- I live in a fairly busy area that used to be extremely safe (I used to walk home alone at midnight in high school) and now I rarely leave my apartment after dark. There's very angry, erratic people, many on substances, and I've had some rough encounters already. And don't get me started on public transport.... My sister saw someone almost get randomly pushed into the subway tracks yesterday, and obviously that doesn't get reported. It's worse than people think, and it's only gonna get more horrible once winter hits.

As a Canadian, I am fuming with anger at how easy we have made it for terrorists, gangsters and law evading criminals to find an easy path to citizenship in Canada! What the hell are we doing as a nation? The government must make sure that we have zero tolerance for extremism and deport these criminals back to their country of origin. \n\nAnybody seeking a Canadian citizenship should have NO business fighting for a secession in a foreign land and engaging in violence. I've been living in Toronto for over thirty (30) years with a little two years try in Halifax, which didn't work due to the lack of meaningful jobs.\nWhen I arrived here in the late 80th I was very impressed with all the services provided and the speed to see medical professionals.\nI'd spent almost 10 years without a family doctor since my first one retired, and now I'm fortunate enough to have one who is so busy that I have to wait months for an appointment.\n\nIt is painful to notice that already paid services are disappearing and how dirty and dangerous this, once an amazing city, is today.\n\nI'm retired now just waiting for my wife to do the same to move out of this country, with the hope that our very low combined pensions will be enough to live somewhere else.\nMoving out of the city, even out of the province, it is not an alternative since anywhere out of here, includes having a car with all the expenses that this include.\n\nSad reality for retirees and specially for young couples with children in tow.\nSoon we will see this beautiful country devoid of human qualified presence to support all the neglected refugees that are coming.\n\nWho knows, maybe this is a new experiment on how so many homeless people can survive the harsh winter.\nGreetings from Toronto.

At least from what I have seen in Ghana, people are starting businesses.\n\nI am going to say something I observed about Ghana. I found out that women, as usual, are more hard-working. I realised that the men don't have work because they are lazy or have too much pride. I have watched so many videos where so many business owners complain about the ineffectiveness and inefficiencies of the workers. They are not dedicated when they work for other people. I watched these business owners whose workers in the farms are mostly women, and they were very happy that women are easier to control and have good work ethics as opposed to men. The men prefer jobs where they don't use their energies such as Yahoo Yahoo boys, selling in shops where they don't touch anything or lift a finger.\n\nGrowing up, we knew that men were supposed to do the hard-working jobs in society. But these days, men like to idle around and touch nothing. The reasons being that the African culture teaches us that men are not supposed to do anything at home. They are supposed to be served by women. Then, instead of the men going out there to do the hard work and make the money, they wait around expecting cushy jobs that don't make them lift a finger.\n\nLook at China that you mentioned. These boys work absolutely hard. Even in the villages. Look at Muslim countries. You will never see women working on the streets. The men are even the ones who cook the food on the streets and sell. This all dawned on me recently with my children, and I feel absolutely dejected because they are not interested in our country. All my hard work is gone down the drain, and all that can happen is for us to leave our children behind and live like people who never had children in the first place. For now, most people see it like something to be proud of, and are happy to say ( my children live abroad). Africans are the most stupid people I know, and that is why we are always used for slave labour. Why are they all approving all these visas and allowing all these people to drown at sea? \n\nThese countries allow these fake visas deliberately because they drain African countries to enrich their own since they can't get the minerals easily these days.

Im Canadian from Northern Alberta. I travel often to the balkans often. Every time I come home i see how bad it is here. People work so hard for very little. And the extras people have is wasted away. Then there is the nanny state aspect, it is not just from the government but the citizens as well. Which creates a atmosphere that makes community building seem impossible. \n We hit the apex 10 years ago. And it really is time to leave. \n Health care?\n My friend had a botched back surgery, he nearly lost everything. Waited over 6 months for mri and other tests, treated like garbage. Now in Belgrade Serbia. You call for a mri you get it the next day for 100 dollars. \n Things aren't as good as the people believe they are. \n Modernity is killing the human connection, but other places still have it. And it is refreshing to see it.

I think you got it wrong with giving the point to Canada for healthcare. I lived the majority of my life in Canada paying punishingly high taxes fir our glorious “free healthcare “? You know the one where you wait for 9 months to get a cat scan and then another 5 to get it analyzed. Here in the USA as a working professional I pay a modest buy up fee to my employer’s healthcare provider and actually get to see a doctor in a timely manner and have standard procedures done quickly. Not the case in good old Canada.

Hello brothers and sisters I’m seeing a problem here. The interest rate in the late 1970s and early 1980s interest rate was 12-18%. People\nComing now are in MUCH better financial condition then people who came then with nothing. The difference is two main things: many new immigrants don’t have the same drive and motivation that previous immigrants in terms of sacrifices such as not driving a mustang, but they also didn’t just settle for labour jobs, they used their brains and began business along side labour. Second thing is, the immigrant wants to see the result before putting in the work. If after getting out of the horrible conditions of India and coming to Canada, a country loaded with opportunities, you still have difficulties then you need to change your expectations and work ethic to match, if they don’t then don’t complain. Cost of living is not the issue, it is the false expectation that they give themselves. To be quite honest with you it takes most immigrants one generation not 5-10 years, so either start working smarter or wait to have this reflection of what Canada is like until you have lived here for 50 years.

Comments from a Canadian. Homeless people are generally concentrated in the larger cities but in the past few years it has become a real problem. It is a real problem for the people when the temperature drops to -30C. Mental wellness is a huge issue. The racism issue is mainly against the indigenous. The doctor migration to the US is a money thing, not better conditions. Getting a family doctor is easy in some places and difficult in others, generally in rural communities. Getting a reference to a specialist is not an issue and I believe this may be a doctor specific issue. If your GP does not refer you, ER will take care of you. The issue with referrals is the triage system that may result in a longer wait to see the specialist. This is in contrast to the US where one can see a specialist very quickly, if one has insurance. In Canada, every citizen and legal resident has the ability to receive medical care as covered by the provincial medical systems which differs from province to province. Many doctors are now offering online communication with your GP and specialist. Your finance comments are inaccurate. There are 5 nation wide banks but there are also nation wide credit unions and provincial banks which in my opinion these tend to offer better service than the big 5 (exclude National Bank, which is big bank but more investment focused). Cell carrier monopolies is a real issue. Cell carriers are recently offering unlimited data, no long distance to the US, etc. Other countries have a definite advantage here. The government has enabled conditions for a new carrier a few times but eventually, these smaller carriers get swallowed up by the big national carriers. More recently Rogers bought out Shaw which limits our choices further. Sales tax is not always 10-15%. In Alberta the sales tax is 5%. Passing courses and evaluations ensures there are standards which is a good thing. Would you want a Civil Engineer designing a road or bridge that is not suitable for the climate? How about a doctor with questionable credentials? Agree with your recommendations for hiring. It is expensive to hire and train a new employee but can be much more expensive to fire an employee. Agree with the housing crisis comments and the reasons. Getting an absent owner to fix a property? This is crazy inaccurate. Multi-dwelling properties have property managers paid to look after the properties regardless of who owns it. While on the average, foreign investment may not seem to contribute to property prices, this is not the case when looking a the local sectors of the big two - Toronto and Vancouver. There was a case in Vancouver where a property with a shack sold for over $1MM. This is not because the house price was unrealistic, but because of the property location and perceived property value. This is a direct result of foreign investment in houses in the Vancouver area resulting in a lack of properties. Many of these foreign owned single family investment properties remain empty most of the year. Another big issue in many Canadian municipalities is the lack of building code enforcement. The laws are in place but not always enforced.

This Canadian lived in Orange County CA for 10 years. I took my the 12 year old with me. I had been offered my dream job and was paid enough to have a good standard of living. However, I lived in an immigrant community to save money as I found many of the high schools were horrid compared to Canada. I had not realized the school to school inequality to be so extreme and my kid changed to independent study at home. So with a Canadian elememtary education, they graduated high school a year only while skipping no courses..\n\nMy kid had medical issues and even with good HMO insurance, we could never get a decent diagnosis until it had gotten so bad that their digestive system was so wrecked. I finally sent them back to Canada for the surgery that we could not get in the USA. It seemed the insurance companies kept getting in the way. And in one case a doctor went all religious on us. After 6 years of almost continuous pain they finally got relief for a decade until the prior damage came back to haunt them However, after a year of university ib Canada my kid went to a private university in the eastern USA. They have decided to remain in the USA and now in their mid 30s, they make really good money anf have top line medical insurance which pays for the ongoing care they need because of the damage caused by delays when a teenager. \n\nI found life in the suburbs of Orange County nice but the OC is not a good place to meet people. When after 10 years there, in 2010 I returned to Vancouver to care for my elderly mother. I had been living alone for 6 years by then and was offered the first job in Vancouver anything close to me dream job there. and I returned to Canada at age 59. I had been approved for a green card in 2008 but there was a 6 year wait for it to come through. But I noticed the racism in the USA start breaking out all over the place when Obama got elected. And it has gotten worse and worse every year. Especially with 45 enabling it so much. \n\nMy circle of friends in Southern California are mainly good people and not at all like what we call MAGA-hats now. Except one who thinks 45 was the greatest. Politically, the USA is on the path that Germany was on in 1933 and I fear for the US Democracy if the Orange One gets in again. Even my kid and their spouse have bug out plans to head to Canada just in case. This is why my kid, while having a green card has never taken US citizenship. Besides, being a Canadian has not affected things the two times they got security clearances \n\nWhile most Americans are good people, it seems that about 25% have gone just plain loco and care nothing about democracy. And appear to prefer the USA to be a totalitarian theocracy \n\nI was there long enough, paying the maximum FICA taxes for 10 years to get a small pension from Social Security and I have Medicare Part A. I can afford to buy parts B and D but I see no reason. I have even better coverage in Canada for way less cost. The USA has a nice warm climate in many places and I just loved that. But otherwise y'all have too many people who want to turn the place into an intolerant police state and to return the country to 1950s levels of intolerance, So in my retirement, I will stay here in Canada. Even though I could go and move in with my kid in the USA and get onto US Medicare.

I was a French exchange student for my masters at UCSD. I met my current fiancé a couple years ago at the start of my masters and he proposed right before I left. I just got my appointment at the Paris embassy, a year after we started the K1 visa process. It’s a long, expensive and very frustrating process but I can’t wait to marry him and go to the beach again! When we first submitted our application and we looked at the wait times with the lawyer, I was so relieved to see that for French immigrants, the wait times are 1/10th of most other countries. You'll need either rich parents, two unusally high powered incomes, or preferably both.\n\nMany Canadians are starting to leave for the US or places like Columbia or Cambodia as they feel their quality of life is much better. You also don't experience four months of winter in these places.

Although, I love here in BC Canada, but good to speak out truth! thank you for your true and reliable facts sharing. I agree every country has issues and here everything is slowly improving too, but it is frustrating to watch such problems that are solved in most least developed countries a decade ago. You can see someone sobbing from pain and yet to wait a week for doctor (feels to me meeting butchers :)). You can see many surgent and talented Intern/Indian doctor, experts and engineers doing labor work, are not they even capable for general basic services?! Solutions and resources are a lot but no body pick them up! as if it is a concession force not to. Say more about diversity but less inclusion of Asians.

Well, as a Canadian, I guess i'll pitch in.\nWould I move to the US? The short answer is no. But I will explain more in detail.\n\nFirst, I do not see any advantages to the US compared to Canada. Americams often tout their country as the beacon of freedom and the land of opportunities, but I don't feel that Canada is so different there. We're actually higher on the world freedom index, and its not like our economy was in shambles and everyone dirt poor... We pay more taxes, fine, but we also get more services in return, and that last part has the advantage to remove a big layer of worry. Like, for healthcare, I don't have to worry if i'm covered by insurance or not, or if the insurance carrier will drop me on some technicality. I'm a citizen. All the basic needs are covered; no questions asked (and the healthcare quality is not half bad. We just prioritize urgent cases over non-urgent; so if you go to the hospital for something non-urgent, you will wait, and more urgent cases will pass before you. Annoying when it happens, but I understand and agree with that in the end)\n\nSecond, I do see a lot of disadvantages. All the points raised in the video are valid, from the private-sector healthcare system, the gun control laws (or lack thereof), the social policies and legislation in some states; they don't agree with me.\n\nI think it comes down to some specific social and cultural ideas that are prevalent or at least present in a substantial manner in the american society. Bear in mind that I am generalizing here, not every american believes these points, but many do. I'm talking about ego, nationalism/patriotism, secularism etc.\nI feel that the US often has a really overinflated vision of itself. Like, the idea that America is the best. At everything. Wich is factually not true, but this idea also poisons the debate on many issues, and tends to limit social introspection that could lead to real advances.\n\nI've also noticed that the american basic school system is strongly patriotic. Everyone in the US is taught a lot about the US themselves in school, but not much about the rest of the world. I leave in New Jersey and I pay about $400 a month for health insurance,I also deducted this money when I do my taxes at the end of the year. I got to see great doctors and specialists when I needed without waiting for days. There is no such thing as free health care and doctors. I don’t work for free neither the doctors. This is very biased in favor of Canada. However, I strongly agree with your viewpoint on gun control. Canada comes out on top. When it comes to Healthcare, you omitted that Canada is experiencing a shortage of doctors and the wait time for care is longer and longer. More doctors are moving to the US for better salaries. For education, the US system made it such that with a Bachelor degree you can get a good job. A Masters degree isn't required although good. Meanwhile, in Canada competition in job market makes it that employers hire over qualified employees. With a Masters degree you're likely to occupy a Bachelor degree position. I personally don't see this as a good thing. When It comes to political and religious diversity, it depends on personal preferences. Some people like diversity, others don't. I personally like conservative states. A 2021 report indicates that thirty thousand new immigrants left Canada due to expensive living conditions. At the end of the day, it is like the saying there's no accounting for taste.

I’m 52 years old and have never witnessed outright racism against blacks. Yesterday I went to see a doctor. I have fibromyalgia and can barely walk but I had to cause I don’t have a car atm. The waiting room was PACKED. I asked about seeing a doctor and was told “ he’s not seeing patients today”. I asked “what about all of these people”? She said “they’re all immigrants and he is seeing them”. I’ve lived here my entire life but I guess he wasn’t seeing Canadians. I find the black people that complain and cry racism haven’t done much with their life. I have friends that are VERY SUCCESSFUL black people and they never talk like this. You just wouldn’t not hear it out of their mouths. And they live in Edmonton . Hard working, decent people they are. I’m facing homelessness come July 1. Ain’t nobody coming to save me. Rent increase of $430 dollars will do that tho. Everyone is struggling to some degree. Instead of further dividing us, we should be coming together to come up with solutions to help each other. I grew up in the Caribbean and moved to Canada and I honestly love it. I know it’s expensive but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I drive around and see how beautiful this country is and I’m so happy to be here. Healthcare: I go to the hospital and know I’m waiting for 8 hours and just plan. I moved to a smaller town not far from the GTA but I hop in my car and see them. I’m not taking away from everything you girls are saying: I agree!!! However, I love this place?? and yes I complain about the cost like everyone else.
