There is a lot of talk on Fentanyl headed south, but no mention by Canada of how much of the drug heads north. I can't be zero. There has to be transit of the drug from the USA into Canada.\n\nBut what I truly don't understand, is that what heads south is not crossing through the Canadian border. All south bound traffic needs to go through US Border patrol agents. So by that measure, how is Canada not doing its job? I've crossed into Canada many times and have been asked to pull over for a search of my vehicle more times than I've been searched on my return to the USA, which was once, my very first crossing in 2002. \n\nMy only guess is the problem isn't fentanyl, that's just a distraction and by design a way to get people believing in something that isn't true and to help further the rift.

There has been a war on drugs for decades! As long as there is a demand and money flows, so will the drugs. This is not about fentanyl or immigration. It would be nice to see more from Canada in their investments to secure the border and stop crossings, cartel movements, and drug operations. The US has spent more than 409 billion since 2003 on such operations. Regardless, I feel for you Canadians and it sucks that it has come to this and I hope we keep strong relations in the future. Hopefully we can come to a fair deal soon. Mexico and China are the big players that do not do nearly enough to prevent these crimes. In fact, the Mexican government helps the cartels by not trying to stop them. China's lack of regulation on the ingredients to make fentanyl contribute to a large extent to this tragedy as well.

I'm usually reasonable enough to realize that while I may disagree with many policy decisions, there's usually a relatively coherent line of thought to back said actions up. Yes, there are illegals from Canada, but almost 100% of them are from overstaying visas rather than crossing the border unlawfully. So let's talk about fentanyl. \n\nMost fentanyl in the US originates from China, often in precursor form, and is then processed in Mexico before being smuggled into the states. But it's typically trafficked in small, high potency quantities, often hidden in legitimate shipments or through mail, and only on very rare occasions is it being brought in by individuals crossing the border. It has _never_ been documented to have shipped in as part of large scale commercial imports, so a 25% tariff on legal trade with Canada and Mexico doesn’t directly target the black market supply chain at all.\n\nIf we take Trump’s reasoning at face value, the argument seems to be that he wants to exert economic pressure on Mexico and Canada as a means of having them crack down harder on drug trafficking networks. But the issue is that fentanyl simply isn’t coming in through mass import channels, so all this looks like is a punitive measure without a clear mechanism to actually achieve its stated goal. And the implications? Drastically higher costs for consumers in the US, Canada, and Mexico, with absolutely nothing to show for it.
